RAUCOUS AMERICANA SHOWCASED IN

CONCERTS IN THE COURT DECEMBER 1 • 7:30 P.M.

We’re kicking off the 2018-19 Concerts in the Court series with the rich and raucous sounds of the Bumper Jacksons 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 1 in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court. The Bumper Jacksons make music that is both hot and sweet, painting America’s story from the seductive sounds of New Orleans to the hollers of the Appalachian Mountains. Folding together early styles of jazz, blues, and country swing, they strike a bold yet elegant balance between paying homage to the traditional and creating their own singular sound. Bursting at the seams with rich threads of Americana, their playfully creative originals and reimagined roots music resound with an energy that creates the life of party. The group began as a duo, a city-meetscountry experiment between songstress Jess Eliot Myhre and banjo player Chris Ousley. They hopped on bicycles, touring the country, instruments on their backs, seeking to reimagine roots music. In five short years, Bumper Jacksons grew to a brassy, seven-piece ensemble, with horns and pedal steel. They have been honored multiple times as the Mid-Atlantic’s “Artist of the Year” and as the “Best Traditional Band” at the Washington Area Music Awards. Tickets for this performance are $26.50 for members, $31.50 for general admission. The museum opens at 6:30 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize, and visit the Museum Shop. Concerts in the Court also feature a cash bar and special gallery talks at intermission. For tickets, contact the Performing Arts Ticket Office at 315-797-0055 or 1-800-754-0797. Tickets are also available online at mwpai.org.

Museum of Art YOUR LAND, MY LAND: IMMIGRANT ARTISTS IN THE UNITED STATES In the arts, as in other areas of life, people who immigrate to the United States are often inspired by their new home. The Museum of Art’s Cardamone Gallery is currently a showcase with a series of exhibitions for works from the permanent collection that reflect the rich tradition of artists who moved here as children or adults, developed their talent, and shared it for the appreciation of all. The series is titled Your Land, My Land: Immigrant Artists in the United States. This winter, Your Land, My Land features works of art by Henry DiSpirito (1898, Castleforte, Italy-1995, Utica, N.Y.). DiSpirito immigrated to the United States at age 21 and worked as a stone mason until he retired in 1964. In 1940 he enrolled in an MWPAI sculpture class taught by Richard Davis; DiSpirito carved stone, and later wood, into sensitive forms of fauna and allegorical figures for the rest of his life. DiSpirito was also a painter, especially in his younger years, and the Museum is proud to exhibit for the first time two of the artist’s oils, recent acquisitions generously donated by DiSpirito’s three daughters.

Henry DiSpirito (American, born Italy, 1898-1995), Trees, c. 1933, oil on board, 5 7/8 x 7 3/4 in., Gift of the Daughters of Henry DiSpirito, 2017.6.2

Henry DiSpirito (American, born Italy, 1898-1995), Owl, before 1980, oak, 11 3/8 x 13 1/4 x 7 in., Gift of Helen Cohn, 96.25.15

NEW ACQUISITION: RICHARD LONG, HALF MOON “Early on, I realized the world outside the studio was more interesting than what was going on inside it. People have been making impressions in the earth for thousands of years; in general, my work takes its place among many other man-made marks.” —Richard Long The Museum of Art proudly announces the acquisition of Richard Long’s Half Moon, 2015, an impressive sculpture of red slate that was quarried in eastern New York. Long (British, born 1945) is a pioneer of the Land Art movement from the 1960s, when artists questioned the commodification of their work, and created ephemeral projects with unusual materials, including time – which can be governed by the sun or moon or geology. Long said the subject of his art is “where my human characteristics meet the natural forces and patterns of the world.” Half Moon resembles a rough-hewn or mountainous terrain, as seen from above. The half-circle is a typical shape for Long, who juxtaposes organic, irregular stones within a geometric shape to unite nature and reason.

Richard Long, Half Moon, 2015, red slate, 21 ½ x 196 x 98 ½ in., Museum purchase, 2018.12

Museum Art Events Museum ofofArt NEW AUDIO GUIDE HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN Patron, Artist, Muse: Women of MWP is the Museum of Art’s new audioguide, developed by Acoustiguide and available on easy-to-use devices, free of charge. The program presents milestones of the Museum’s extraordinary collection and illustrates the crucial role that women have played as collectors (patrons), as art makers (artists), and as inspirations (muses). Women helped to found MWPAI, laying a foundation for the Museum’s exceptional collection, which includes the creations of artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Bourgeois. The variety of voices on this exciting audioguide includes special guest artist Kay WalkingStick speaking about some of her luminous contemporaries as well as the earlier, pioneering work of artists such as Isabel Bishop. Stop into the Museum and take the tour to see the collection from a fresh, new perspective!

Georgia O’Keeffe, (American, 1887-1986), Pelvis with Pedernal, 1943, oil on canvas, 16 x 22 in., Museum purchase, 50.19

Development DURING THE SEASON OF GIVING, GIVE A MEMBERSHIP Is there anyone on your list for whom you dread buying a present? Someone who has whatever he or she wants, someone who is difficult to please, or someone who you want to thank in a special way but don’t know very well? Give them a membership to Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. It’s the perfect gift for all those people on your list—music fans or film lovers, aspiring artists, couples with young children or anyone who enjoys the arts. Each of them will find something wonderful at MWPAI.

JUST THINK OF WHAT A GIFT OF MEMBERSHIP MEANS: • Members enjoy discounts on Performing Arts event tickets, School of Art classes, and Museum Education programs. • Becoming a member of MWPAI means free admission to wonderful art exhibitions all year, including special exhibitions, like the recent smash hit Kimono! The Artistry of Itchiku Kuboto and the upcoming exhibition, Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection. • Becoming a member means receiving special discounts on all film showings at the Museum. The Film Series brings award-winning, often independent films to Utica for showings, every Wednesday and Friday, all year long. • Becoming a member also means enjoying special discounts at the Museum Shop, where great jewelry, holiday cards, beautiful scarves, and more are on sale, Tuesday through Sunday, during regular museum hours. • Members enjoy free use of the MWPAI Research Library, which includes a great collection of art books, music CDs, films, and more. • When you gift someone with a membership, you are giving them a year of the arts. You are also supporting an important cultural asset of this community. There is no better gift you can give. To purchase a gift membership, stop in or call Jill Maney, Director of Development, at 315-797-0000 ext. 2297. You can also purchase a gift membership online at www.mwpai.org. Thank you!

CONSIDER MWPAI FOR END-OF-YEAR GIVING At the end of the year, many of us plan our budgets for gift-giving. We know that we will purchase presents for children and parents, friends and co-workers, and perhaps even a few for ourselves. Many of us also devote a few dollars to charity, especially around the holidays. This year, consider giving some of those dollars to Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute to support the arts. Why? Because the arts are transformational. They take us places. They help us to see in ways we could not see before. They change our perspective. They help us grow. Dozens of studies conclude that participating in the arts—by making art, seeing it, hearing it, or just wandering around in the middle of it—makes you stronger, more open-minded, less stressed, and better at thinking critically, more creatively, and more innovatively. You probably know that if you give to MWPAI at the end of the year, you may be able to deduct your gift from your taxes, which will help you when you itemize deductions on your tax return. That’s a bonus! The best reason to give is that you’ll be helping the community and helping a wonderful cultural center at its heart. That’s a gift that will keep giving all year.
