Exclusive Exhibition Captures Kennedy Era Febr uar y 8 thr ough May 4

merican Royalty: The Kennedys, Fashion & Celebrity, Photographs by Mark Shaw showcases timeless images of John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy. The Museum of Art exhibition will be the first museum show to exclusively feature the critically acclaimed work of Mark Shaw. Museum staff worked with the Monroe Gallery of Photography, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Mark Shaw Photographic Archives to select the 50 prints in the exhibition, which can only be seen in Utica. Shaw (1922-69) recorded an era and produced exquisite and unforgettable images that symbolize 1960s America. Shaw originally photographed Mrs. Kennedy for LIFE magazine in 1959. He subsequently developed a close friendship with her and the family resulting in extraordinary access to their inner circle. During the following four years, Shaw captured the Kennedy family at their most relaxed: in Hyannis Port, on the campaign trail in West Virginia, at their first proper family home in Georgetown, and in the White House. Shaw became the Kennedys’ unofficial family photographer and his timeless images included in the exhibition capture some of their most intimate and candid moments. Only two weeks before John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Jacqueline Kennedy wrote a note to Shaw, one of many, thanking him for photographs of her with her 3-year-old son, John F. Kennedy Jr.: "They really should be in the National Gallery! I have them propped up in Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, Hyannis Port, MA, 1959 our Sitting Room now, and everyone who comes in says the one of me and John looks like a Caravaggio—and the one of John, reflected in the table, like some wonderful, strange, poetic Matisse.” Images from this photo shoot will aloso be on view in the Museum. As a leading fashion photographer who began working for LIFE in 1952, Shaw spent 16 years with the magazine and is credited with 27 cover photographs. His images were included in more than 100 stories showcasing the magazine's European fashion collections. Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, and Mademoiselle all featured Shaw’s photographs, and he was one of the first photographers to capture fashion on the runways and backstage at the couture shows. The fashion photography in the exhibition ranges from models in glorious gowns to behind-thescenes images of the embodiment of high fashion, Coco Chanel. Decades after his death, Shaw’s photographs continue to be published regularly in books and magazines. “Nothing succeeds like excess,” states the Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), as she surveys a grand dinner table set with the finest crystal, silver, porcelain and linens on PBS’s Downton Abbey. Rachel Munson Williams Proctor, who oversaw the Fountain Elms household from 1894 until her death in 1915, may have been more humble, but she certainly would have approved of the exquisitely laid-out table. Bring a little Downton Abbey into your daily life as you experience a lavish, candle-lit dinner on the Fountain Elms Terrace. With food and atmosphere influenced by the television series, this special evening will include entertaining lessons on the role of domestic servants and the strict (and in today’s world, almost humorous) decorum dictated by Edwardian-era social mores. If you are feeling inspired by Lady Mary or Lady Edith and their fashionable dresses, don your best Downton-inspired attire for this pleasurable and elegant evening. The evening includes a six-course meal by Leaf, Loaf and Ladle with sherry, wine, and champagne, served in true Crawley fashion, interspersed with trivia about the people of Fountain Elms and Downton Abbey.

The Voyage of Life Embarks on National Tour
T
he Voyage of Life (1839-40) is considered Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole’s greatest achievement. The MWPAI Museum of Art purchased Cole’s original four-part allegorical series in 1955 and it is among the most popular artworks in the Museum of Art collection. Since being acquired, the series has left the building only twice.
taken extensive new research on Thomas Cole and The Voyage of Life. His findings will be published in a richly illustrated catalogue that explores the deeper meaning of the imagery, examines the influence the series exerted on American culture, and tells the remarkable story behind the creation of the four paintings and their fascinating 175-year history. In May, The Voyage of Life will begin its own voyage as it visits four venues over the next two years: the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio June through September 2014; the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia October 2014 through January 2015; The St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri, May through August 2015; and The Dixon Museum and Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee, January through April 2016. Help send off The Voyage of Life at a special Art Alive day filled with family activities on February 21. The last day to view The Voyage of Life is Sunday, March 2. While the artworks will be missed while they are shared with a national audience, their homecoming will be celebrated in the spring of 2016.

The remarkable series will now be shared with a larger audience as part of a Museum-organized touring exhibition. The exhibition Thomas Cole and The Voyage of Life will demonstrate in dramatic visual terms the cultural significance of these monumental pictures. The exhibition also includes a number of the most important preliminary landscape and figure studies Cole made for the series, as well as a selection of the drawings, prints and photographs the series directly inspired, some of which have never previously been published or exhibited and are virtually unknown in the field of Thomas Cole scholarship.
