Sinnott Family Philanthropy Recognized

In recognition of the generosity of the Sinnott family, MWPAI has named its auditorium in their honor. The facility, the Sinnott Family - Bank of Utica Auditorium, was named in recognition of a recent major gift coupled with a long history of giving by the family and the bank. The new name was unveiled at a dedication ceremony Tuesday, December 13. Bank of Utica President Tom Sinnott, his sister Dr. Joan Sinnott, and other members of the Sinnott family, as well as Bank of Utica employees and trustees, attended. The 271-seat auditorium, located in the center of the Museum of Art building, is home to the MWPAI Film Series, Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegel and many other concerts, lectures and educational programs. “The dedication of this auditorium is the celebration of a relationship that began nearly seven decades ago,” MWPAI President Anthony Spiridigloizzi said. “ This is a relationship based in trust, shared values and mutual admiration. The Board of Trustees and staff of Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute are proud to name this auditorium in their honor.” The Bank of Utica and the Sinnott family have been generous donors to the Institute for several decades, sponsoring a number of concerts and exhibitions over the years. “We believe the arts to be integral to the human spirit,” Tom Sinnott said. “We also believe the arts are necessary for our

community to prosper. Consequently as bankers we feel, even beyond having a desire to support MWPAI, that we have a responsibility to do so as it is the epicenter of culture in our area.” MWPAI’s relationship with the Sinnott family began with Tom and Joan’s father, the late Roger Sinnott, and their brother David who passed recently in 2016. Roger Sinnott, president of the bank beginning in 1950 and later chairman until his passing in 2009, supported MWPAI Performing Arts programs throughout his tenure with the bank. David played a key role in this relationship as well. His love of film and music was nurtured at a young age by the Institute, and, in turn, he inspired his siblings. David would show movies at home on an 8mm projector dating from 1953, and that projector will be permanently exhibited in the back of the auditorium to honor David. 3

American Quilts: Sewn Stories Opens February 18

The Museum of Art presents its first major quilt exhibition featuring extraordinary examples of American piecing and quilting from the early 1800s through the present. American Quilts: Sewn Stories traces personal histories and those of a wider nation through the sophisticated patterns, bold colors, and sensitive needlework found in American quilts. Too often dismissed as a “mere craft,” these works show rare aesthetic sophistication and illustrate the lives of those often silent in American history, including women, African Americans, and members of closed religious communities.

Sophronia Young Kinney (American, 1818-99), Crazy Quilt, Night Hunt (detail), 1885, wool and cotton, 58 ¼ x 64 in. Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY, Gift of Dorothy E. Hubbard, N0024.1973

In examining these artworks, we find stories of celebration, loss, identity, and activism as quilters stitched their lives into the textiles that would cover their families and friends. Looking not only at historical quilts but also those of living artists, the exhibition considers how contemporary artists engage with this traditional medium to make statements about modern life that challenge viewers. The story of quilting is an American story and, with this exhibition, we find works that connect us to the past and present. The exhibition is free to MWPAI members. General admission is $8; free to all 18 and under.

Museum of Art COLLAGE/REFORMAT/REFOCUS Cardamone Gallery February 11 through July 23 Cutting and pasting, sampling this tune and that, collage in all its forms is truly a modern medium. It was born of the 20th-century’s newly fast-paced life in transit, capturing a fragmented glimpse of the passing world from a speeding train or automobile, or bits of fading sounds heard through a car window. Collage / Reformat / Refocus celebrates this impulse. The exhibition is a showcase for works of art in the Museum’s collection that are not regularly on view included are works by master collagists Kurt Schwitters and Romare Bearden, as well as by John Cage, Peter Coffin, Robert Rauschenberg, and William Wegman. Of special note are paintings and collages on loan to the show by PrattMWP faculty Greg Lawler and Ken Marchione, and Remsen-based illustrator J.D. King. See the world anew through works of art that create something fresh from something used.
