PICTURES TELL A BOLD STORY – TOMMY BROWN: UPSTATE February 9 through April 7

Haywagon, 1983 ©Tommy Brown Pictures of people, farms, and the striking landscapes of Central New York populate Tommy Brown: Upstate. This retrospective is a definitive look at photographer Tommy Brown’s decades-long study of his home in and around Chenango and Madison counties. Brown’s earliest images include black-and-white portraits of startling frankness. His color photographs of farm structures resonate with the poetic geometry of Modernist American paintings by artists such as Charles Sheeler or Georgia O’Keeffe. Brown describes his most recent work as “pictures of nothing”; these can be remarkably simple—a single corn stalk against the horizon— and their simplicity is the distillation of all Brown has worked at for four decades, his desire to see. Brown is sensitive to the effects of regional light in passing seasons. His consistent subject is the spirit of this place: its natural and fierce beauty, the relationship of people to the land, and the marks of the past on present-day life. Ultimately, he just wants to make a good photograph. Born in Norwich, NY, Brown earned his undergraduate degree from Colgate University and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University. Tommy Brown: Upstate is the first museum exhibition of the remarkable photographs Brown has composed during a lifetime of looking.

Performing Arts Events CARMEN IN THE MET: LIVE IN HD The 2018-2019 The Met: Live in HD continues with Georges Bizet’s tragic masterpiece, Carmen, 12:55 p.m., Saturday, February 2 in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium. Richard Eyre’s stunning production of Bizet’s masterpiece was the talk of the town when it was unveiled on New Year’s Eve 2009. Remounted for the 2018-19 season, mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine leads the cast as ultimate seductress Carmen—a gypsy woman desired by every man but determined to remain true to herself. Roberto Alagna is Don José, the soldier who falls under her spell and sacrifices everything for her love, only to be cast aside when the toreador Escamillo (Alexander Vinogradov) piques Carmen’s interest. With dances created by star choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and conducted by maestro Louis Langrée, this production brings every aspect of Bizet’s tale to thrilling life, from its lighthearted beginning to its inevitably tragic climax. Live content from The Metropolitan Opera House begins at 12:55 p.m. with the curtain rising at 1:05 p.m. Tickets for The Met: Live in HD are $24 for MWPAI members, $28 for the general public, and $14 for students. Flexible subscription packages for the series are also available. Call the Performing Arts Ticket Office at 315-797-0055 or 1-800-754-0797. Tickets are also available at mwpai.org. The Met: Live in HD series is made possible by a generous grant from its founding sponsor, The Neubauer Family Foundation.
