Forceful, Monumental Sculptures Terrible Beauty: Richard Friedberg Sculpture February 27 through May 30, 2021 Monumental sculptures representing natural disasters caused by human activity create a forceful presence in Terrible Beauty: Richard Friedberg Sculpture, opening February 27 in the Museum of Art. Incidents of tragic human loss and environmental disaster shape the nine monumental sculptures he created over the past decade. Friedberg has been compelled by such horrific events as the BP Deep Horizon wellhead blowout at Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident and tsunami. Friedberg’s hands and imagination have transformed these events into sublime works reminiscent of terrible explosions, tidal waves, and billowing, greasy smoke. The sculptures are made with aluminium mesh screening—a material that proves appropriately malleable for his subject—are graceful, at

times even elegant; fully three-dimensional and they demanding our attention and respect. Richard Friedberg has had a distinguished career in contemporary sculpture. After receiving his MFA from Yale University, he moved to New York City and was invited to exhibit his work at notable galleries such as Tibor de Nagy, Fischbach, and OK Harris, as well as at the 1973 Whitney Biennial and the Storm King Art Center. In 1974, he was invited to participate in an upstate New York artist’s residency that would become Sculpture Space, Inc., here in Utica. Friedberg was commissioned to create public sculptures for the Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, and Prudential Financial building in Jacksonville. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant.
