Intro To Oil Painting Portraiture
In executing a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Students are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model and learning basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch to then transfer and complete an oil painting. Students will walk out with a finished painting and a wealth of knowledge accumulated for exploring classical techniques. This class is ideal for those who are beginners to painting or others specifically wanting to develop figure painting or oil as a medium.
Instructor Spotlight: Yulia Levkovich he School of Art is thrilled to welcome painter Yulia Levkovich to our roster of talented community arts instructors. Yulia is an award-winning representational painter. She was born in Ukraine and moved to Canada where she was exposed to the Russian School of Painting. Yulia completed rigorous training at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She worked in production for Jeff Koons and taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Yulia’s work is included in many public and private collections and is exhibited extensively in New York City and abroad.

Master Copy Class at Fountain Elms
This class celebrates intensive technical study, problem solving, and dialog with artists and artworks of the past. It builds on a long-standing tradition of working from close observation of a masterpiece in a museum's permanent collection. Artists will receive personalized instruction in oils and the unique opportunity to utilize artworks from the Museum of Art's collection. Students will copy either still lifes or portraits of the Institute's founding family. This is an unrivaled creative opportunity to paint from masterworks in Central New York. Due to limited access, students must declare preference to work from figure/portrait or still life at the time of registration. All paintings are 19th century masterworks from the MWPAI collection. The first two classes are held at the Studio Building working on preparatory sketches. The remaining six classes will take place in the Fountain Elms galleries. Some previous knowledge of oils is required. Sarah Wenzler, American (active c.1860-69), Still Life, c.1860-69, oil on canvas, 14" x 17", Gift of Mrs. John W. Calder, 68.56

Dining Downton
“The business of life is the acquisition of memories, in the end, that’s all there is,” states Carson the Butler to Housekeeper Mrs. Hughes over tea. As the popular PBS drama Downton Abbey comes to a close with its sixth and final season, we invite you to share and make some memories as we explore the luxurious lifestyle of the Lords and Ladies of Downton Abbey.
Aside from extravagant table settings, impeccable attire, and lavish foods, one can count on a dollop of drama at a Crawley dinner party, be it a footman spilling lobster on your lap or a marriage proposal gone awry! We will avoid the drama, but indulge in fine food and libations, learn a few lessons on Edwardian-era etiquette, and test our knowledge of Downton Abbey seasons one through five.

fun way to pass the time in January is to join the latest trend - adult coloring books. Divine Divas - Costume & Design Adult Coloring Book, by veteran costume designer, painter, and illustrator Betty Ann Fraley, is a gorgeous collection of 25 intricate images of beautifully costumed strong women - some historic, some modern, and some other-worldly. Each image is an intricate black and white line creation for adult-level colorists.
A
Fraley was a costume designer for many years in the theater department of the State University of New York at Oneonta. In recent years she has focused on illustration and painting, showing her work in publications, and galleries and shows throughout Eastern United States.
Elizabeth Herr from Herkimer has found inspiration for her painting treasures from road trips with her parents, flights to Europe and the Orient with her husband, and walking through cities and the countryside by herself. These excursions produced many memories, many journals and many rolls of film and memory cards. She has been fortunate to be able to put together a rich mosaic of the places she has seen, places she has lived and people she has met. Each of the small vignettes she has painted represents a fleeting moment in time, never to exist again but captured in paint and ink to be relived again and again. two-person exhibition highlights ceramics and printmaking, the priority areas for this year at the School of Art Gallery. The show pairs Gabriel Reed, a ceramist from Kansas City, with Nicholas Hill, a printmaker from Ohio. Both artists have been influenced by a Japanese aesthetic.
A This tasty new musical, based on the award-winning book by Maria Dismondy, empowers children, when faced with bullying, to always do the right thing and to be proud of themselves.

Reed lived in Japan and became interested in wabi-sabi, a Japanese term associated with aesthetics and philosophy. In his words, this has influenced his studio practice where, “observation, reverence, meditation, faith, feeling and the unknown” are key components. He uses fire to create porcelain, soda and anagama fired stoneware with an interest in crafting refractory forms. In describing fire, Reed states “it fills available space, moving along the path of least resistance and transforming all it encounters. In this way it flows like water.” Reed describes how the “collision” between the ceramic material and fire “creates layers of multi-dimensionality, developing refractory systems that explore the direct use of fire as a mold, holding, shaping, exploiting collision and resistance…” Through his work he affirms that he is seeking, “a deeper exploration...and revelation...of nature’s unrealized ends.”
Nicholas Hill will be exhibiting a selection of cyanotypes inspired by images from a calligraphy lesson book that he found in a used bookstore in Kyoto, Japan. These large-scale cyanotypes are reminiscent of Japanese screen panels. He integrates Japanese woodcut mark-making and textures into his work with camera-sourced images from Kyoto and Tokyo which becomes an intriguing intersection of traditional and more modern practices – the cyanotype itself being a link between photography and printmaking. Similarly to Reed, Hill also has an interest in the process behind the creation of the pieces. A process that is keenly aware of nature. “I begin by pouring the liquid medium on paper. The physical gestures of tilting and folding each piece of paper and watching the liquid medium flow became my calligraphic response. Once “drawn,” I exposed the light-sensitive paper to the sun using transparencies, often layering one on top of another.”
