FIERY TRUMPET AND SMOKY VOCALS HEAT UP CONCERTS IN THE COURT January 26 • 7:30 P.M.

The 2018-19 Concerts in the Court series continues with the Bria Skonberg Quintet 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26 in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court. New York-based Canadian singer, trumpeter, and songwriter Bria Skonberg has been described as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” by the Wall Street Journal. Recognized as one of “25 for the Future” by DownBeat Magazine, Bria Skonberg has been a force in the new generation with her signature sound of fiery trumpet playing and smoky vocals with creative concoctions of old and new. The 2017 Juno winner for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, Skonberg has performed at hundreds of festivals worldwide. She is the co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp and New York Hot Jazz Festival. In 2015, following her second album, Into Your Own, Skonberg received the distinguished Jazz at Lincoln Center Swing Award. In the last year, she has performed the music of Aretha Franklin alongside Michelle Williams, played with U2 at the Apollo, sat in with the Dave Matthews Band at Jones Beach Amphitheatre, was a featured guest with Jon Batiste, and sang The Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden for a New York Rangers game. Tickets for this performance are $26.50 for members, $31.50 for general admission. The Museum opens at 6:30 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize, and visit the Museum Shop. Museum of Art LEONARD BASKIN, GRIEVING ANGEL Winter is a good time to visit the Museum of Art to rediscover favorite paintings and sculptures and to discover new things. Grieving Angel by Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000) may be a bit of both. MWPAI acquired this remarkable figure the year it was created in 1958, but it has not been on view since 2010, so the dramatic sculpture may be unfamiliar to some. This winged creature stands with folded arms in the pose of an observer. Unlike the airy, ethereal angels depicted in Thomas Cole’s Voyage of Life series, Baskin’s figure seems very much planted on this earth, and sorrowfully so. What is the angel contemplating that brings grief? In the post-World War II era, Baskin and other artists addressed the horrors of war in their work as a means of bearing witness to humankind’s extreme cruelty and possibly as a means to exorcize demons. One may also imagine that this angel is an appeal to humankind’s better angels. Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000), Grieving Angel, walnut, 84 in. (h), Museum purchase, 58.283.a-c

PrattMWP LETTER FROM INTERIM DEAN KEN MARCHIONE It is with great enthusiasm that I return to the Interim Dean position at PrattMWP College of Art and Design and guide us in our mission of creating a pathway for aspiring artists to pursue a career and lifetime in the arts. Our notable model provides an intimate scale in which each student is a priority in their growth as an artist; we prepare our students for their junior and senior years at Pratt Institute’s campus in Brooklyn and for access to New York’s active art scene. Being part of PrattMWP is also being part of Utica’s dynamic art arena, with Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute at the center. From the famed art collection, changing art exhibits, the art-house and independent movie series, and dynamic and diverse concerts, students are exposed to an environment that celebrates the arts in every form. This rich atmosphere of artistic celebration has inspired our students to become artists, designers, curators, educators, graphic designers, website designers, journalists, and filmmakers. They work in museums, universities, galleries, for businesses, ad agencies, and magazines here and abroad. Their work is exhibited in galleries around the world. They are also entrepreneurs who have started everything from non-profit arts organizations to design firms. We are now in our 18th year of affiliation with Pratt Institute and the relationship continues to grow in connectivity and interactive cooperation. Last year, in coordination with Pratt Institute, we simultaneously rolled out major revisions in the curriculum, enhancing the foundations program and every area of focus. These changes were designed to maintain Pratt’s innovative philosophy, ensuring our students are prepared for today’s art market and career opportunities. It is for this reason, and the high quality of the professors at PrattMWP and Pratt Institute, that we are recognized as one of the top art and design programs in the world. Today’s technological advances in media, high-tech materials, and advances in the production of traditional materials makes this an exciting time for creative individuals. Artists are leading the way in how we communicate using innovative design and materials, conveying ideas and expression, and posing reflective questions that examine the human condition as our world and culture evolves. I am driven continuously by my desire to see PrattMWP stand apart, and above, in what is achievable in educating artists for sustainable careers and cultural leadership in the arts. I share with great pride that Utica is home to an extension campus of Pratt Institute, one of the top and most recognized art colleges in the world. — Ken Marchione Interim Dean, PrattMWP

FAMILY AND ALUMNI WEEKEND 2018 Family and Alumni Weekend 2018 was a huge success. Twenty families came to campus to share in a weekend of events designed to showcase the PrattMWP student experience as well as the offerings of Utica. Families and alumni were able to tour the historic Saranac Brewery, be entertained by master illusionist Leon Etienne, and view works by PrattMWP students and faculty in the PrattMWP Gallery and the McCulley Student Art Gallery. The highlight, for many, was the student sidewalk chalk art competition which beautified the sidewalks of PrattMWP for the weekend. Family and Alumni Weekend is an annual event, so be sure to join us next year for what is guaranteed to be another amazing weekend!

Development INCLUDE THE ARTS IN YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Do you make New Year’s resolutions? It seems we all vow to exercise more, eat healthier, be kinder to a neighbor or family member, or carve out more time for ourselves from our hectic schedules. It’s a healthy impulse: resolve to enjoy your life, spend more time doing things you want to do, and help others to do the same. Resolving to change for the better in a new year is not just an American tradition or even a Western one: members of cultures from all over the globe participate in this ritual, whenever they celebrate a new year. What are your resolutions? Have you been to a concert lately? Enjoyed a movie with a close friend? Gazed at an awe-inspiring painting? Have you tried creating art yourself? This year, make time to participate in something new at MWPAI. Go to a First Fridays Happy Hour event. On the first Friday of each month, the Museum stays open from 5 to 8 p.m. and features live music, micro-tours, cocktails, crafts, and even shopping. It’s a great way to wind down and open up the weekend. See a film! At MWPAI, we show films every Wednesday and Friday (at 2 and 7:30 p.m.). Take a yoga class in the gallery on a Saturday morning. Visit a painting or sculpture that evokes a special memory or bring a friend to explore something new in a special exhibition. No matter what you choose, you’ll be glad you made it part of your new year.
