Museum of Art ART IN BLOOM RETURNS TO THE MUSEUM OF ART April 17 through 19
We are looking for professional florists, garden club members, designers, and other creatives, to fashion stunning floral arrangements for Art in Bloom. Now in its second installment, Art in Bloom is a biennial celebration of the Museum’s collection as interpreted through fresh flowers. Designers are challenged to create displays that highlight elements and ideas within a particular work of art. This exceptional three-day program also includes special events, workshops, and floral-inspired items at the Art in Bloom Pop-up Shop.
CALL FOR APPLICANTS A limited number of spaces are available. Participating floral designers will be able to choose an artwork from a list provided by Museum staff and can view the artwork online or in the Museum galleries. Ribbons are awarded by a panel of judges (to include FGCNYS judges) as well as by people's choice. Applications are available online at mwpai.org Future Exhibitions. You may also contact Barb Kane at bkane@mwpai.edu or 315-797-0000 ext. 2158 to request an application. Complete and return the application with three photographs representative of your floral design work to bkane@mwpai.edu. All applications are due by the end of the day Monday, February 3, 2020. Designers will be selected based upon experience and sample design photos.

Explore Art in Philadelphia and Allentown in April Join MWPAI President Anna D’Ambrosio and Director of Development Jill Maney for a very special tour of art and gardens in Philadelphia, April 17-20. On Friday morning, we will take a private chartered bus (with bathroom on board) to Philadelphia. On the way, we will stop at the Allentown Art Museum. While in Philadelphia, we will enjoy a private group tour of the Barnes Collection in its new location; explore the world-class paintings and sculpture at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and then make a journey to the famous Longwood Gardens, bursting with spring blooms in April. Our trip will culminate in a visit to a spectacular private collection of Victorian works under glass—everything from birds to flowers to hair ornaments. We’ll return to Utica on Monday, stopping at the Everhart Museum in Scranton on our way back. The journey promises to be packed with art, good food, and wonderful conversation. We’ve reserved a block of rooms and availability is limited, so please contact us to reserve your place. Contact Andrea Gaffney at 315-797-0000, ext. 2138, or email agaffney@mwpai.edu for information and reservations. 5
Performing Arts Events THE MET: LIVE IN HD The Met: Live in HD presents Alban Berg’s expressionistic masterpiece Wozzeck at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, January 11 in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts William Kentridge’s new production of one of the most significant operas of the 20th-century. Composed during and in the aftermath of World War I, Berg’s dark exploration of a soldier besieged by the evils of society is staged by Kentridge in a ramshackle warren of stairs, ramps, discarded furniture, and debris. His own theatrically animated charcoal drawings, along with other projected drawings, maps, and film clips, evoke a nightmarish world of crashed planes, searchlights, ghostly gas masks, and battlefields. Peter Mattei makes his role debut as Wozzeck opposite Elza van den Heever as Marie, the mother of his child. Singing the roles of Wozzeck’s tormentors are Christopher Ventris as the Drum-Major, Gerhard Siegel as the Captain, and Christian Van Horn as the Doctor. Andrew Staples makes his Met debut as Andres. Kentridge, who previously directed Berg’s Lulu and Shostakovich’s The Nose at the Met, unveiled the new production at the 2017 Salzburg Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Live content for the Metropolitan Opera House begins at 12:55 p.m. Tickets for The Met: Live in HD are $24 for MWPAI members, $28 for the general public, and $14 for students. Flexible subscription packages for the series are also available. Call the box office at 315-797-0055 or 1-800-754-0797. Tickets are also available at mwpai.org. The Met: Live in HD series is made possible by a generous grant from its founding sponsor, The Neubauer Family Foundation.
