Love of Community Leads to Support
Love of their community and the arts motivated Francis J. and Ruth A. Pugliese of Utica to invest in the area’s artistic future. The Puglieses sponsor the MWPAI School of Art Artists-In-Residence (AIR) program where two emerging artists from different disciplines live and work on the MWPAI/PrattMWP campus in Utica for one academic year. The program is designed for emerging artists and recent MFA graduates in the visual arts to gain teaching experience within the School of Art’s non-credit program while developing their studio practice. Artists receive housing, studio space, meals, professional opportunities, and financial support. MWPAI and the surrounding community gain creatively from interactions with resident artists through classes and free lectures, open studios and gallery exhibitions. These visiting artists are an energizing and crucial component of creative life on campus.

For Fran, owner of Pugliese Pest Solutions, the love of the arts began while watching his neighbor, sculptor Henri DiSpirito. Ruth’s father, Dr. A Louis Shaheen, had a practice nearby the Institute on Eagle Street and fostered in Ruth and many others, an appreciation for the arts. “We just knew Munson-Williams, we grew up with the place,” Fran said. Their love of the arts and MWPAI was equal to the family’s desire to give back to the area. “I was influenced by my dad who gave to MWPAI and other organizations, “ Ruth said. “Everything was local, we wanted our money to stay here.” When it came time to contribute, the AIR program was an obvious choice. “When we think of doing something exciting to help, we look at education. We want these young artists to discover and develop their talents,” Fran said. “We want to see this program grow. We can help make it stronger and see the immediate impact of our donation.”

Museum Shop TINY POTS MAKE A BIG SHOW AT THE MUSEUM SHOP Tiny pots by LGG Creative Art Pottery from Hamilton are now in the Museum Shop. These beautiful glass bottom ceramic pots have many uses. Each tiny pot is thrown “off the hump” -just a tiny piece is centered at the top of a large hunk of clay and then many individual pieces are thrown in one sitting. After the pieces firm up slightly, each pot is shaped and trimmed on a kick wheel, bisque fired (sometimes painted with underglazes), then glazed, glass is added, and refired. Glass and ceramic have different cooling temperatures and the difference creates the crackle effect in the glass. The potter, Leslie Green Guilbault, has experimented with this process for three years with consistent repetition and successful results that have yielded a number of glass and ceramic combinations that are as robust as they are beautiful.

Colgate University. As a graduate student at SU in 2012, Annette held an internship in the MWPAI Museum Education Department. She has experience in academic and independent art galleries and most recently worked as the Collections Manager at the Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. When asked her thoughts about working in museum education, Annette responded: “I fell in love with museums at a young age. To me, they were intellectual playgrounds—the art was alive, if only in my imagination. Museum education, in my opinion, is a balancing act between providing visitors with a context for the art and allowing them the freedom to experience it on their own terms, as I did as a child.” We are excited about working with Annette, and invite you to extend a warm welcome to her as well.

Development CONSIDER A GIFT THAT PAYS YOU BACK Of all the gifts that pay you back, the Charitable Gift Annuity is the simplest, most affordable and most popular. A Charitable Gift Annuity is often referred to as a split gift. Part of the gift is to be used by the Institute immediately, and part of the gift is set aside in a reserve account to be invested and used to support the payments to the donor/annuitants.
MWPAI will then issue a contract to pay the donor, the donor and a spouse, or any two beneficiaries named in the contract, fixed quarterly payments for life. These payments become one of MWPAI’s general obligations, fully backed by all of our assets, and will not fluctuate. The remaining balance passes to MWPAI when the contract ends.
How It Works: A donor transfers cash or securities to Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute through our account with KeyBank. Our minimum gift requirement is $10,000 and the donor must be at least 60 years old.
Benefits: • Dependable, fixed income for life, regardless of fluctuations in the market; • In many cases, you’ll receive a more favorable interest rate than you currently receive on most investments;
• Receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your gift; • A portion of the annuity payment you receive will be tax-free. To start a Charitable Gift Annuity or for more information, please contact Bob Mortis at 797-0000, ext. 2129 or bmortis@ mwpai.org. MWPAI can provide a projection of what your Charitable Gift Annuity payments would be based on your age and the amount of the gift with no obligation for you to participate.
