Fashion Comes of Age in the City of Light, 6 p.m. Valerie Steele, internationally celebrated and trend-setting fashion guru, will make a special appearance at the Museum of Art in conjunction with the summer exhibition Monet to Matisse. Ms. Steel is the Director and Chief Curator at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and is known for cutting-edge scholarship. For more than 400 years, Paris has remained the center of the fashion world. The Age of Impressionism or the Belle Époque (“Beautiful Era,” 1871–1914) is a crucial time in the exploration of Parisian fashion history. This illustrated talk will explore the connections between fashion and modernity, which fascinated 19th-century artists and poets. The modern city provided numerous arenas for fashionable display, such as the new opera, the boulevards, and the couture atelier. The image of the Parisienne, the New Woman, and the dandy became iconic figures.
French Indulgences: Wine, Cheese, Hors d’oeuvres, 7 to 9 p.m. Enjoy samples of local foods by Jones Family Farm, Utica Coffee Roasting Company, Adirondack Olive Oil Company, Bazan Bakery, catered hors d’oeuvres, French wine tasting (additional fee), and a cash bar with French cocktails. Museum to Explore Italian Nativity Tradition Seeking Local Examples
B
eginning in the 13th century, Italians developed a rich arts and cultural history surrounding the creation of presepe (nativity) scenes. In conjunction with the exhibition Italian Presepe: Cultural Landscapes of the Soul opening at the Museum this fall, we are seeking examples of nativity scenes (especially antique examples) from Rome, Naples and Pagulia, or unusual examples that reflect your cultural heritage or personal experience. If you think you may have something of interest, please email Rayna Schneider at rschneid@mwpai.edu or call 315/797-0000, ext 2168. Italian Presepe: Cultural Landscapes of the Soul is a photography exhibition opening October 10 that will explore this important form of Italian installation art, the traditional nativity scene. Photographer Margot Balboni documented this tradition—from historic installations to modern workshops—in Rome, Naples and Puglia. Her stunning images will be featured in the exhibition.
Margot Balboni, Piazza San Pietro, Vatican City, 2012; Sassi of Matera presepe by Francesco Artese. Each year the Vatican erects a large presepe in Piazza San Pietro that is revealed with great fanfare and excitement on Christmas Eve. In 2012 the Nativity was donated to the Vatican by Basilicata who commissioned artist Francesco Artese to create a nativity scene inspired by the Sassi of Matera, an ancient town in Basilicata, a region in Southern Italy.
