The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again On view June 9 thr ough September 8

T

he Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again, opening to the public Sunday, June 9, is a rich and dynamic presentation of art created by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The exhibition features 63 iconic images, primarily screenprints, including Campbell’s Soup cans; celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Muhammad Ali, Mick Jagger, and others; flowers; camouflage, as well as Warhol’s wallpaper with cows and his silver mylar clouds.

Andy Warhol, Flowers, 1964, offset lithograph on paper, 23 1/8 x 23 1/8 in., Collection of The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh ©2013 The Andy WarholFoundation for the Visual Arts, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York, NY

and then the toast of the New York City art world, Warhol understood like very few in his era the power of aspiration and desire in product packaging and marketing. His artwork both captures and reflects this gloss. That rampant consumerism continues to define the United States in the new century demonstrates the perspicacity of Warhol’s vision.

For Warhol, all imagery was fodder for his shrewd assessment; he elevated a collection of mundane soup cans into a minimalist-inspired grid and leveled the glamorous movie star headshot into a garish clown mask. Andy Warhol, Details of Renaissance Paintings: Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482, 1984, screenprint on Arches Aquarelle paper, 32 x 44 in., The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh ©2013 The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York, NY

Andy Warhol lived through interesting times and was a canny observer of American popular culture and social mores. A working-class Catholic boy from Pittsburgh who became a successful graphic artist

The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again is an indepth look at a fascinating chronicler of contemporary life and asks if this body of artwork is, as Warhol maintained, an unbiased portrait of America or a raw unmasking of American values. The exhibition will remain on view through Sunday, September 8, 2013.

The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again is organized and circulated by The Andy Warhol Museum, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Local sponsors are Gilroy Kernan & Gilroy Insurance, Dr. and Mrs. Raouf Kodsy and Family, Oneida County Tourism, and Excellus BlueCrossBlueShield.

Father’s Day and More at the Gift Gallery

Breathing Life into Stone: The Sculpture of Henry DiSpirito by Ashley Hopkins-Benton With contributions by Dr. Eugene Paul Nassar, Delores A. DiSpirito, Theresa M. DiSpirito, and Loretta DiSpirito Loconto

ather's Day is Sunday, June 16 and the Gift Gallery is highlighting the work of two special artists that dads will appreciate. Photographer Tom McCarthy has more than 20 years experience shooting whatever happens to grab his attention. His work spans a wide range of subjects, but he often will focus on natural and biological themes - probably not surprising given that he is a biology professor. He attempts to show things in ways that they have not been commonly viewed. The Gift Gallery is very pleased to offer McCarthy's photos in an assortment of striking cards.

Books will be available at the MWPAI Gift Gallery.

Museum of Art Sculpture Court June 14 5 to 7 p.m. Free and Open to the Public Join the family, friends, and colleagues of Henry DiSpirito for a celebration of his legacy. In honor of the new book Breathing Life into Stone: The Sculpture of Henry DiSpirito, the Museum’s DiSpirito collection is on view through September 1.

On June 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be a special book signing and debut for the newly released book Breathing Life into Stone: The Sculpture of Henry Di Spirito by Ashley Hopkins-Benton. Henry Di Spirito's work is part of the permanent collection at Munson-WilliamsProctor Arts Institute. Be sure to see all the new and exciting Andy Warhol merchandise at the Gift Gallery for the opening of our newest exhibition The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again. As part of the Arts Festival "Meet the Artist Series" the Gift Gallery will be featuring Karen-Burmese weavers from the Resource program at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees daily from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All of the weavers are Karen-Burmese, originally from Burma. They will be demonstrating their crafts on portable back strap looms. They will be making scarves, table cloths, wall hangings, traditional Karen clothing such as shirts and sarongs, as well as handbags and wallets. All the items are hand woven from traditional Karen patterns, from memory, passed down from generation to generation and each weaver has their own signature pattern. Typically, these items are woven from brightly colored thread. It is a wonderful opportunity to watch, learn, appreciate and perhaps purchase an original Karen-Burmese weaving.

Gift Gallery Hours of Operation for June Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday - 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Campus Store is closed for the summer and will re-open for the fall semester on Monday, August 26.
