Dance Program Celebrates with 40th Anniversary Annual Spring Dance Concert May 29 thr ough June 1

he Annual Spring Dance Concerts for the upper divisions of the Jazz/Tap program will take place 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30. The Ballet program will be featured 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1 in Hamilton College Wellin Hall. Nancy Long, Kathy Ryan, Lynn Bollana, and Sharon Warncke have prepared two rousing concerts of new works and reconstructions of audience favorites to mark the occasion. Kathy Ryan’s Swing It Kids! has her Junior and Senior Ensembles dancing to the infectious beat and classic sounds of the music from the 1940’s. Dancers will reprise Rock Me Amadeus complete with white wigs, tuxedos and tap shoes. Audiences always marvel at the energy and precision of the younger students, and this year 40 dancers will rock to the music of the 1950’s in American Graffiti. Premiering on the Jazz/Tap program is a dance for the Junior and Senior Ensemble, Olafur Suite, which evokes the shimmering, icy lands of the north. Kathy Ryan’s Formerly Known As and Nancy Long’s Reverence et Passage complete the program.

The ballet program spans the classical ballet tradition from the reconstruction of Le Corsaire (1800), to Nancy Long’s whimsical Alice in Wonderland. The ballet follows Alice, danced by Mary McEvoy-Melo as she falls down the rabbit hole into a fantastic world of adventure with the Mad Hatter (Noah Price) and the March Hare (Benton Stivali) and all our favorite characters including an entire deck of cards. In Le Corsaire Anna McEvoy-Melo will dance the mysterious Pas de Slave with guest artist Matthew Sparks. In Pas des Odalisques the senior dancers Colleen Ashmore, Tatyana Carrillo, Isabella Fulop, Rachel Petrie and Emma Zulch will be joined by the rest of their class in the demanding original choreography of Petipa. Le Jardin Anime has all 42 ballet dancers fill the stage with their nuanced dancing and rose-hued costumes. The seniors will take their final bow with the MWPAI dance program in Nancy Long’s Reverence et Passage set to Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances. Concerts in the Court Presents Jazz From the Crescent City May 3 • 8 p.m.

ot New Orleans jazz takes the stage as Concerts in the Court presents Jeremy Davenport 8 p.m. Saturday, May 3 in the Museum of Art Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court.

Davenport’s trumpet and vocal skills have been a vital part of the New Orleans music scene for more than a decade. With his original lyrics and music, Jeremy infuses his unique style and mood of storytelling to create a modern edge while maintaining a distinct feeling of a lifestyle reminiscent of when jazz was at its peak of popularity. Born in St. Louis, Davenport studied and played with members and guests of the St. Louis Symphony, including jazz great Wynton Marsalis who introduced him to Harry Connick, Jr. After touring with Connick for six years, Davenport moved to New Orleans where he is the weekly headliner at the New Orleans Ritz-Carlton Hotel’s Davenport Lounge. Tickets for this performance and all Concerts in the Court are $36.50 for Members, $41.50 for General admission, and $16.50 for students. Flexible subscriptions are also available. The museum opens at 7 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize and visit the Gift Gallery. Concerts in the Court also feature a cash bar and special gallery talks at intermission. An introduction to looking at art, this program emphasizes visual literacy through picture books and artwork in the Museum of Art. The Golden Age of European Painting June 14 through September 14, 2014

The exhibition showcases 70 major 17th- and 18th-century paintings by European masters Rembrandt, Rubens, Tiepolo, Gainsborough, Hogarth and others from the collection of the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. Highlighting work from Italy, France, Spain, Flanders, the Netherlands, Germany, and England, The Golden Age of European Painting offers a comprehensive exploration of an era of rich cultural, religious, and economic changes that radically transformed the world. The Golden Age of European Painting has been organized by the Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky.

Dance Program Continues Under Private Ownership

eginning this summer, the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute’s dance program will be operated privately, under the direction and ownership of Nancy Long who taught dance at MWPAI for 32 years.

The program, now called Utica Dance, will remain in the same location, continue the level of excellence established by the Institute and remain the area's premier center for dance education. The Institute’s Board of Trustees is confident in Nancy’s leadership. Under this new arrangement, she can implement creative and entrepreneurial approaches to the program’s operations. Since 1982 after retiring from a performing career, Nancy devoted herself to training and nurturing hundreds of dancers. Her dedication has been reflected in the numerous presentations, including annual Spring Dance Concerts and December Nutcracker performances.

Featuring a blend of folk, roots and Americana by

he Gift Gallery is featuring two new local artists. Joan Klossner offers beautiful watercolor notecards of her paintings and Karen Burt has published a children's book very appropriate for the season, A Little Seeds Big Dream. The book includes a packet of sunflower seeds. Joan Klossner started painting at age 8 in a class at MWPAI under the tutelage of Edward Christiana. She never lost her love for art but life interrupted her pursuit of it. Raising a family and teaching school filled her middle years but she was able to return to her study of painting after retirement from Holland Patent Central School. She has studied under a number of local and nationally known artists. Her paintings are a reflection of her travels and her love of nature.

Karen Burt lives in Whitesboro and is originally from Ilion, New York. Thanks to the support of her husband, the imagination of her children, and with the encouragement of family members, she has written, illustrated and self-published two storybooks for children, A Little Seed’s Big Dream and Pencil's First Day of School. The book-writing process started as a family project. Her oldest son had an accident and suffered a severe concussion leaving him light and sound sensitive and unable to attend school. It was very hard to find an activity that her three children could do together so the family spent many nights reading. Her children thought it would be fun to write their own books. Their goal was to create simple stories that were easy to read. They also wanted their books to have fun facts to learn. Karen’s books are child friendly using larger fonts and spacing between sentences so young readers can develop their visual skills. The stories also contain those basic sight words that teachers want children to learn to become more successful in school. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11. Commencement Speaker Alumni Casey Daurio

rattMWP alumnus Casey Daurio is the class of 2014 commencement speaker. Casey attended PrattMWP in 2008 and earned a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in 2013. He has worked on the design for the interior retail space of the Pratt Pop-up, Dekalb Market, the Pratt 125th Legends Award, the Urbarn Pavilion for the Googamooga Music Festival 2012 and the Pratt space for Dining by Design at the Architectural Digest home show.

effrey Siegel returns for this season’s final installment of Keyboard Conversations® 8 p.m. Saturday, May 10 in the Museum of Art Auditorium with Mistresses and Masterpieces. The program includes the music of Brahms, Schumann and Chopin and features love-inspired music by the "significant others" in the composers’ personal lives. The extremely popular Keyboard Conversations format offers listeners the opportunity to discover the influences that affected the creation of the music being presented. Mr. Siegel shares details about each composition that lead the audience to realize the subtleties and intricacies of these great works. Join Museum of Art Director Anna D’Ambrosio and Artistic & General Director of The Glimmerglass Festival Francesca Zambello for a night of memorable performances and magnificent art. Ms. D’Ambrosio and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Mary Murray will discuss the rich influence of Japanese art and culture on American and European works in the Museum’s permanent collection. Ms. Zambello and singers from the summer season will introduce The Glimmerglass Festival’s 2014 productions, including Puccini’s hauntingly beautiful Madame Butterfly. As a special treat, the evening will culminate with a preview of MWPAI’s summer exhibition The Golden Age of European Painting and Glimmerglass artists’ selections that complement the exhibition. Light refreshments will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court and the exhibition Butterflies, Geishas, and Dragons: The Arts and Influence of Japan can be viewed. The presentation and performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Films are shown on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) All films are shown in 35mm format and BluRay digital cinema, with a state-of-the-art Dolby surround sound system. Comfortable seats give every patron an unobstructed view of our large screen. Admission for all screenings is $8 general admission and $6 for MWPAI Members. Admission for students with valid identification is $4 at all screenings. Tickets are on sale 30 minutes prior to each screening.
