Museum of Art News WELCOME MIRANDA HOFELT We welcome Miranda Hofelt as the new Curator of 19th-Century American Art. She comes to us from the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she held the position of Associate Curator. Miranda is a native of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and received her master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her bachelor’s degree from Marietta College, Ohio. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago. Upon completion of her master’s degree, Miranda began working at the Art Institute of Chicago where she was a contributor to the exhibition and catalogue Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage, which were praised by the New York Times when the exhibition premiered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While guest curator at the Henisch Gallery, Pennsylvania State University, Miranda organized the exhibition Corsets and Cameras: The New Woman, Photography, and Bicycling in Turn-ofthe-Century America. Miranda joined the Hunter Museum of American Art in 2014. There she strove to create engaging exhibitions connecting art of the past with topics that concern us today. She curated a variety of exhibitions including: Crossing the Color Line: Eudora Welty and the Segregated South; Imagining American Girlhood; With Liberty and Justice for All: Art and Politics During the 1976 Bicentennial; and Under the Mexican Sky: A Revolution in Modern Art Photography. Miranda says she had long been aware of MWPAI and its collection and is now looking forward to working with the art and presenting it for the community. “It’s exciting to join an institution dedicated to being a cultural center for the city’s diverse populations. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with a nationally renowned collection on questions that inspire and engage.”

PrattMWP College of Art and Design PRATTMWP DEAN DONNA MORAN TALKS WITH SOPHOMORE MICHELLE MARTINEZ GARDA, PHOTOGRAPHY MAJOR Where were you born? I was born and raised in Rowland Heights, California, about 20 minutes away from Los Angeles.

light on human rights and social justice issues that happen around the world.

Did you live there until you came to PrattMWP? Yes, I’d never been on the east coast prior to coming to PrattMWP. Michelle Martinez Garda

Why did you decide to major in photography? At first, my decision to major in photography came with my love of capturing family moments. But now I’m set on shining light on Latinx issues such as lack of representation and breaking away from European stereotypes.

What campus activities have you been part of at PrattMWP? My major keeps me very busy, so I haven’t been Untitled involved in much other than being a “Pratt Peer” for fellow incoming students at the beginning of the school year. Is there anything you like to spend time on outside of school? I really enjoy planning more photoshoot ideas that are not for class assignments. Recently, I collaborated with printmaking major Sean Albertson on a photo/silkscreen series on sexual liberation. When you have completed your BFA, do you plan to stay in the Brooklyn/NYC area? I’m honestly not really sure. I do really miss Los Angeles, but I guess it depends on where, and if, I am fortunate enough to find a job/internship opportunity.

In which particular style of photography are you interested? I’m very interested in photojournalism and documentary photography. I want to travel and be able to experience different cultures and capture the beauty of different cultures, but also Untitled I would like to shed

Any special interests? A few special interests of mine are learning new things about my culture as much as I can, as well as watching unsolved mysteries and listening to crime podcasts.
