ELIHU VEDDER, HAUNTED BY THE MACABRE MYSTERIOUS, MARVELOUS, MALEVOLENT: THE ART OF ELIHU VEDDER On View through December 29

Mystery, death, and the macabre haunted artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) throughout his life. He was born into a family that believed in omens and embraced mystical realities beyond the physical world. His grandfather predicted the hour of his own death. His aunt had heavenly visions. An uncle stockpiled iron, convinced he could turn it into gold (he was later committed to an insane asylum). A fortune teller prophesized that Vedder’s mother would have a long life if she survived 1852; that year, a mysterious illness struck down Mrs. Vedder and she died. Vedder was just 16 years old and a deep gloom shadowed him for the rest of his life. Vedder’s father moved to Cuba when the artist was a child. Young Elihu was shuttled between New York State and the Caribbean, which he found exotic and troubling. There he encountered the horrors of slavery and learned about brutal beatings and oppression. The Vedder children also had gruesome confrontations with death. When Elihu and his older brother went searching for shells on the Playo de los Judios (Beach of the Jews), they saw buzzards picking at the burnt bodies and skeletons of the unbaptized and diseased who were forbidden to be buried in consecrated ground. Desolate beaches and sandy deserts became recurring backgrounds for the unsettling visions Vedder painted during the American Civil War, as he did in The Questioner of the Sphinx (1863). The Digressions of V, Written for His Own Fun and that of His Friends, 1910, Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, Munson-WilliamsThe MWPAI Museum of Art owns an illustrated copy of the Proctor Arts Institute, Rare Book Collection artist’s memories, The Digressions of V.: Written for His Own Fun and That of His Friends (1910). Presented as a series of entertaining, often horror movie-like stories, the nightmarish youthful tales he recounts suggest that death, mania, and mysticism marked him for life.

Learn more about this extraordinary artist and his works of art in the exhibition Mysterious, Marvelous, and Malevolent: The Art of Elihu Vedder, on view in Gallery 1 North through December 29. Mysterious, Marvelous, Malevolent: The Art of Elihu Vedder is supported in part by Art-Bridges - Terra, a six-year pilot initiative that enables the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute to curate three exhibitions based on loans of masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Each exhibition will be larger than its predecessor with the final exhibition containing 30 works of art from the MFA collection. This exhibition is a collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and is made possible by an initiative of Art Bridges, Inc., and the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Development Happy Birthday, MWPAI! Celebrate 100 years! In 1919, our founders, Maria Williams Proctor and Thomas and Frederick Proctor, chartered MWPAI as “an artistic, musical, and social center,” a threefold mission parallel to our current one of serving diverse audiences through the Museum of Art, School of Art, and Performing Arts divisions. Help wish MWPAI a happy 100th birthday through a special birthday gift. We are seeking 1,000 donations of $100 apiece. Donations may come from new or existing donors, and, if you’re feeling inspired, feel free to contribute more than $100. Creatively presented gifts make birthdays more special. We are running a contest for the most creative way to deliver an MWPAI birthday donation. Will your delivery be in costume? In a group? Inside a cake? However you choose to deliver your gift, let us know when you plan to arrive and we will make sure to record the event for social media. In December, we will announce a winner, who will receive a season’s subscription to Concerts in the Court for two (a value of $228). If big splashes aren’t your style, you can make a gift quietly through the mail or by stopping into the Museum of Art to use our new dip jar, which has been set to celebrate birthday magic. Just dip your credit card in and “Ding”—you’ve helped us reach our goal. Whether you visit MWPAI to enjoy live music, view films, expand your creativity in ceramics classes, or experience spectacular art exhibitions, you have reason to celebrate all that MWPAI has to offer. Think of each time you had a special experience at Munson-Williams over the years. Be part of the party. Give $100 to celebrate 100 years of joy and wonder! Questions? Contact Jill Maney at 315-797-0000 ext. 2297.
