Victorian Yuletide Exhibition A Taste of the Holidays Opens November 25

Bountiful tables of sweets, savories, and bubbly will be overflowing with holiday cheer as delectable Victorian-era Christmas meals are depicted in the exhibition A Taste of the Holidays, this year’s annual Victorian Yuletide installation in the Museum’s period rooms. Following the advice of Mrs. S. T. Rover in The Ladies’ Home Journal (December 1907), a table is set for a breakfast in the bedroom. Mrs. Rover explains that, “For the home breakfast, I think it is well to place everything on the table at the beginning.” This casual style of dining, common to us today, was referred to as á la française. Soft-boiled eggs, fish, toast, rolls, butter pats, marmalade, and tea will be “served” using the Williams’ family holiday tea service. As 19th-century household advice writer Mrs. Beeton noted, tea is “the cup that cheers but not inebriates.” Helen Munson Williams’ 1874 holiday menu is the model for the bountiful display in the dining room where turtle bean soup, oysters on the half shell, and pigeon pie are being “served.” The recipe for pigeon pie, a holiday favorite, called for two to three pigeons baked with ham, eggs, and salt and pepper in a puff pie crust. “Clean three of the feet, and place them in a hole made in the crust at the top: this shows what kind of pie it is,” recommended Mrs. Beeton. Unlike the less formal breakfast meal, in the dining room servants offered the food to diners á la russe. Without the clutter of serving dishes on the table, a dramatic Christmas tree-and-mirror centerpiece takes center stage. The parlor and library are set for a cheerful champagne and dessert party. Victorians delighted in recipes for every sort of sweet treat imaginable. All one needed was is a few dozen eggs, a pound or two of butter, and lots and lots of sugar. The idea of plum pudding as a Christmas dish rose to prominence during the Victorian era, as seen in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843). Mrs. Cratchit’s plum pudding was declared by her husband to be “the greatest success achieved by Mrs. Cratchit since her marriage.” Flavorful punch would also have been served at an evening event. The term punch is derived from the Hindustani panch or pañc, meaning “five,” as punch typically was comprised of five

main ingredients: alcohol, water, lemons, sugar, and spices. Every host, however, concocted his own derivation of the recipe using spiced wines, rums, ports, or other spirits, and served the blend from luxurious silver and crystal punch bowls and goblets. The Museum’s collection of toys, games, and dolls, many of which were owned by Rachel and Maria Williams Proctor, will also be on view. The decorations in the dollhouse, an 1856 Christmas gift to the Williams sisters, will parallel the period rooms, right down to miniature versions of the fanciful Christmas foods! Savor the holidays and be inspired by 19th-century cuisine with a visit to the Museum’s period room settings in Fountain Elms. A Taste of the Holidays is on view through December 31. Public tours are available November 28 through December 31 on Saturdays at 2 p.m. To schedule a private group tour, contact 315-797-0000, ext. 2170. 3

Museum of Art NEW INSTALLATION SHOWCASES EUROPEAN MASTERWORKS FROM THE MUSEUM OF ART Recent visitors to the Museum of Art will have noticed a few changes around the galleries. There are more 20th-century paintings on view in the galleries on the ground floor (referred to as the “AO” galleries, for “Auditorium and Offices”) and European Modernism is now showcased upstairs in Gallery 1 South. Do you like what we’ve done with the place? The European Modernist collection has some gems that are beloved by staff and visitors alike. Forming this remarkable group of paintings and sculpture was the brainchild of Harris K. Prior, Museum of Art Director from 1947-57, and Institute patron Edward W. Root. The Museum was founded as a collection of art from the United States, but Prior and Root believed that assembling a body of modern European art would demonstrate the influence of Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Salvador Dalí and other Europeans on American artists. Edward Root explained to the Board of Trustees, “This ought to give a kind of context to the collection, since it was in Europe that the rather strange developments of this century were initiated.” Root and Prior established a list of artists and movements they deemed necessary for a well-rounded group of material. By May 1953, Root characterized the holdings to date: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Early Cubism – Picasso Later Cubism – Gris de Stijl (early) – Mondrian de Stijl (late) – Nicholson Dada (collage) – Schwitters Dada (Free Forms) – Arp [Constellation] Abstract Surrealism – Klee

Since then, the Museum collected additional pieces that strengthen European-American connections. Prior, Root and subsequent Museum personnel were judicious in their selections, so that the European Modernism collection represents each artist at the height of his powers. This winter, bring your holiday guests to the Museum and share your favorites with them.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

The 2016-2017 Concerts in the Court series continues with the Sean Jones Quartet at 8 p.m., Saturday, November 19 in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court under the direction of trumpeter, composer, educator and activist Sean Jones. Singing and performing as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren, Ohio, Sean Jones switched from the drums to the trumpet upon his first exposure to Miles Davis at age 10. Twenty-five years later, he still cites Miles’ overall artistic vision and purity of sound as his greatest personal influence. But it was another immortal visionary who had a most profound impact when Jones was a 19-year old student at Youngstown State University–the magnificent John Coltrane through his masterpiece, A Love Supreme. “All at once, everything just came together for me,” Jones said. “My past, my present, my future; I knew the course I needed to pursue.” Five years later, after receiving his Master’s Degree from Rutgers University, Jones had

a six-month stint with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. This marked the beginning of a relationship with Wynton Marsalis, whose personal work ethic and ability to break barriers had already made a significant impact on the emerging artist. Marsalis offered Jones a permanent position as lead trumpeter and he remained there until 2010. Deeply committed to education, Jones has recently joined the Berklee College of Music’s distinguished faculty as the Chair of the Brass Department. He has also taught at Duquesne University in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh and at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, while regularly offering master classes and clinics all around the world. In addition, Jones serves as Artistic Director of both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras and is working toward organizing various Jazz orchestras all over the country. Jones is the current Artist-in-Residence at San Francisco Performances and is a member of The SFJAZZ Collective.

Development THE MWPAI ANNUAL FUND Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute relies on the generous and committed support of our members, donors and corporate sponsors. This kind of generosity, that began with our founding families and has continued through generations of community donors, enables MWPAI to offer exhibitions, concerts, educational programs, art classes and so much more. This is the ideal time of year to make a tax-deductible gift to the MWPAI Annual Fund that is, in turn, a gift to your commu-

nity. A gift to the Annual Fund provides ongoing support of all of our endeavors, and can satisfy your IRA Required Minimum Distribution for the end of the year without generating taxable income. Gifts of appreciated securities enable donors to take a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day it is transferred to the Institute, therefore avoiding any capital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock, proving to be beneficial to both the donors and MWPAI.
