Victorian Yuletide: Through the Eyes of Immigrants Opening November 24 Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
its candles that count down the weeks to Christmas, and the Christmas tree (Tannenbaum in German), traditionally decorated with apples, gingerbread cookies, pretzels, and red tissue paper roses.
- From The New Colossus, 1883, by Emma Lazarus
The bedroom pays homage to Christmastide festivities observed by immigrants from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales from Boxing Day, December 26, through New Year’s Day. During Advent, Anglican parishes displayed a box into which churchgoers put their monetary donations. The legend of Boxing Day has it that on the day after Christmas, the boxes were broken open and their contents distributed among the poor. Objects from the Museum’s permanent collection depicting the completion of the Erie Canal, built by Irish, Welsh, and German immigrants, are on view to celebrate the bicentennial of this engineering marvel.
Celebrate the holiday season with a family visit to Fountain Elms. The dining room, parlor, bedroom, and library period room settings showcase Christmas traditions introduced to Utica by immigrants from the British Isles, Germany, Poland, and Italy. The Victorian Yuletide exhibition, which opens Friday, November 24, highlights different days throughout the Christmastide season—from Christmas Eve to Epiphany (January 6)—observed by each of these groups. The dining room is set with the finest china and flatware from the Museum’s collection for Wigilia [Vee-ghee-lee-uh] or vigil, an elaborate Christmas Eve dinner in Polish households. The hostess sets an extra place at the table in the hope that Christ, in the form of a stranger, will join the family for dinner. This tradition celebrates hospitality and inclusion for an “unexpected guest.” The parlor highlights German Christmas day customs. In the Middle Ages, Saint Nicholas, or Sankt Nikolaus, traveled with a partner, Belsnickel, a grouchy-looking man dressed in ragged, dirty clothes who wore a mask or ashes on his face. He serves as a disciplinarian with his switch, ready to punish bad children, or at least frighten them into good behavior. Featured in the parlor are the mask of Belsnickel, the Advent wreath, with
The library highlights Epiphany traditions that Italians brought to America. Strictly from a religious standpoint, La Festa dell’Epifania commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for baby Jesus. For Italian children, it was the day when they finally received their holiday treasures. In Italian folklore, LaBefana is a witch who brings treats on the morning of January 6 to good children or charcoal to the naughty. A 19th-century Nativity scene, known in Italy as a presepe, is also on exhibit. The Victorian Yuletide exhibition is free and open to the public and will remain on view through December 31. 3
Smooth, Elegant Jazz Featured in Concerts in the Court November 4 Enjoy smooth, elegant jazz in a relaxed cultural setting. Concerts in the Court presents the Kenny Barron Trio 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 4 in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court. Honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, Kenny Barron has an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms. Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Barron started playing professionally with Mel Melvin’s orchestra while still a teenager. At age 19, he moved to New York City and freelanced with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, and James Moody, after the tenor saxophonist heard him play at the Five Spot. Upon Moody’s recommendation, Dizzy Gillespie hired Barron in 1962 without even hearing him play a note. It was in Dizzy’s band where Kenny developed an appreciation for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. Encouraged to pursue a college education, Barron balanced touring with studies and earned his B.A. in Music from Empire State College. In 1973 Kenny joined the faculty at Rutgers University as professor of music. He held this tenure until 2000, mentoring many of today’s young talents including David Sanchez, Terence Blanchard, and Regina Bell. In 1974, Kenny recorded his first album as a leader for the Muse label, entitled Sunset to Dawn. This was to be the first of more than 40 recordings (and still counting) as a leader. One of the top jazz pianists in the world. The Los Angeles Times The most lyrical piano player of our time. Jazz Weekly

Development CONSIDER MWPAI ON GIVING TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28 November 28 is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year donations. The generous support of our members, donors and corporate sponsors enables Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute to have a dramatic impact on our community. Thanks to the philanthropy initiated by our founders and continuing through generations of community donors, MWPAI can offer exhibitions, art classes, educational programming, performing arts events, and so much more. On this Giving Tuesday please consider a tax-deductible gift to the MWPAI Annual Fund that is, in turn, a gift to our community. A donation to the Annual Fund provides ongoing support of all of our endeavors.
There are many other ways to be a part of the circle of support that helps MWPAI enhance the quality of life for our region. • An annual membership of $1,000 or more places you in the Fountain Elms Society, where loyal members enjoy many exclusive benefits. • Gifts of appreciated securities enable donors to take a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the day it is transferred to the Institute, therefore avoiding any capital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock—gifts that are beneficial to both the donors and MWPAI. • Exhibitions, concerts, and other special programs offer sponsorship opportunities for individuals or businesses. • Charitable Gift Annuities provide immediate tax benefits to donors, accompanied by lifetime fixed annuity payments at an attractive interest rate.
Many of these contributions can also serve to satisfy your IRA Required Minimum Distribution for the end of the year without generating taxable income. As the year draws to a close, we offer our sincere gratitude to our many generous donors for their role in making MWPAI a strong cultural asset for our community. Thank you for considering a gift at this time.
