Skyscrapers Roared into Our Future

The rush to construct the tallest building on earth was a breathtaking competition in the late 1920s, and the seedbed of this race was New York City. When artist Reginald Marsh returned home in 1926 after studying art in Europe, he marveled: “New York City was in a period of rapid growth, its skyscrapers thrilling by growing higher and higher.”

Reginald Marsh (American, 1898-1954), Lower Manhattan, 1930, tempera on canvas mounted on Masonite, 24 x 48 in., Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, Edward W. Root Bequest, 57.195

The Chrysler Building opened in May 1930 at Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street. It is automobile-mogul Walter Chrysler’s monument to himself, as well as an icon of the Machine Age. At 77 stories or 1048 feet, the Chrysler took the prize as tallest building in the world—for about 11 months, until that other skyscraper opened on Fifth Avenue. A muscular symbol of American ingenuity, the Empire State Building went up in 410 days, which was three months before deadline, under budget, and, at 1,250 feet, it remained the world’s tallest building for 42 years (until it was eclipsed by One World Trade Center).

Louis Lozowick, (American, 1892-1973), Hudson Bridge, 1929, lithograph on paper, 14 3/8 x 8 11/16 in., MWPAI, Gift of Edward W. Root, 53.336

Marvel for yourself at the engineering and aesthetic genius of these and other soaring monuments—depicted in paintings, lithographs and etchings, sculpture, photographs, and even furniture—throughout the exhibition Roaring into the Future: New York 1925-1935.

Charles Sheeler (American, 1883-1965), Delmonico Building, 1927, lithograph on paper, 15 3/8 x 11 5/16 in., MWPAI, Gift of Edward W. Root, 53.354

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR ART ALIVE! FAMILY DAYS Shirking the corsets of the Victorian Era, the New Woman of the 1920s was modern in many ways. She smoked, drank, danced the Charleston, wore shorter hemlines, bared her shoulders, and flaunted her sexuality. She was fiercely independent and her newfound freedom ushered in a profound change in American culture. “This is the story of America’s first sexual revolution, its first merchants of cool, its first celebrities, and its most sparkling advertisement for the right to pursue happiness.” -From the hardcover edition.
