The First 100 Years is Only the Beginning: Give to the Centennial Campaign and Help us Transform Lives Our community was forever changed 100 years ago when on September 17, 1919, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute was chartered by the State of New York to establish an “artistic, musical and social center.” To celebrate our past and build for the next 100 years, MWPAI has launched a Centennial Campaign to raise $100,000.
Inspiration Lasts Forever The first century of MWPAI is not just our story, but the story of the people whose lives have been inspired by the arts. For nearly 150,000 people annually, experiences on the MWPAI campus demonstrate the power of art to spark creativity and ignite wonder. Museum exhibitions enlighten, educate and awe. Kids, teens, and adults hone their creative skills through Community Arts classes, and the PrattMWP College of Art and Design trains and nurtures the future of artistic expression. Concerts—from classical to jazz to world music to rock—bring the excitement and passion of live performance to diverse audiences. Authentic experiences with the arts enhance our quality of life and offer all visitors—from community members and school children to international travelers to art enthusiasts—shared human experiences. MWPAI’s impact on the greater Mohawk Valley is strengthened by more than 50 community collaborations including: • The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees • Midtown Utica Community Center • Thea Bowman House • Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program • Central New York Veterans Outreach Center • Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce • The Neighborhood Center • The Kelberman Center • The Resource Center for Independent Living • Levitt AMP Music Series
Celebrate the Past, Build the Future You are an important part of the Centennial celebration. We need your help to reach our goal and ensure that the arts enrich people’s lives here for years to come. Your gift will help MWPAI increase our community engagement through dynamic programming and also help the Institute create a more beautiful and inviting campus with improved landscaping, seating, lighting, and public art. “You have to have art to make a community thrive.”—Alicia Dicks, President, Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties
Your donation will go even further because of a challenge grant from the Community Foundation. Every gift will create a 50% matching gift from the Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties. A gift of $100 will yield another of $50 from the Foundation; if you give $300, they will give an additional $150. Your gift helps MWPAI provide innovative art-based experiences that enhance our quality of life, contribute to the local economy through increased tourism, and serve as driving force in the ongoing revitalization of Utica. Please give generously to the Centennial Campaign today. Visit mwpai.org or contact at 315-797-0000, ext. 2104. 3

Courtesy, Museum Fine Arts, Boston. Reproduced with permission.© 2019 painting The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. All rights reserved Questioner of the Sphinx, which is the centerpiece of the exhibition Mysterious, Marvelous, Malevolent: The Art of Elihu Vedder. The Wanderer explores Vedder’s mysterious artworks and makes connections to other paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts in the Museum to track down clues and solve puzzles that may uncover solutions, or may sometimes pose more questions. Beware, however, the stakes are high for those who dare to challenge the Sphinx— ancient myth holds that Oedipus was the only person who solved the riddle and lived!
