Works will be made from start to finish during the workshop. Develop a contemporary and historic understanding of the unique qualities and processes of salt- and wood-firing and learn to work with the ancient processes of the Anagama kiln. Discover the world of glass blowing and contemporary glass art with three age-specific camps for kids and teens. Each camp offers studio time learning about the hot glass process with visiting glass artist, Mark Russell. Students draw their own most fantastic vision of a glass sculpture to submit to the on-site CMoG glass artists. One design is chosen and made during the camp! Ages 18 + / Beginners / Mary Beth Fiorentino Learn simple metalworking skills and pair them with decorative embroidery techniques. Decorate simple metal shapes with french knots, blanket stitches, and chain stitches. Take it to the next level and crochet pieces with thin metal wire or use die forming to drape. Create exciting contemporary jewelry while exploring the rich process of enameling - applying thin glass to a metal surface. In-class demos are followed by selecting your own imagery to reproduce through screen printing enamel onto water slide decals. Apply decals to simple jewelry components and leave with a library of decals for future pieces.

Craft a bezel setting for a cabochon - a smooth, convex, oval stone - to create a super cool pendant necklace! Learn how to select a cabochon, size and shape a bezel, and then solder the bezel to a flat piece of sheet metal. Techniques learned also include texturing, sawing and piercing. Copper provided. PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO teaches design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP. He received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting INSTRUCTORS ANDREW BUFFINGTON received his AA in fine arts from MVCC and his BA in art education and MA in special education from SUNY New Paltz. Andrew is an artist and art instructor in the Utica School District. Kids JOELLA BURT is a PrattMWP alumni and received her BFA in painting and K-12 teaching certification from SUNY Potsdam. She has exhibited regionally and expanded her digital and traditional painting practice through teaching seminars and offering works for sale locally. Digital Painting / Teens VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea, received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY. Veronica was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. She is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. Pottery / Ceramics PAULA CARUANA received her BA in art education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department and a long-time student in the Institute’s community ceramics program. Young Artists SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she founded and developed the Teen Drawing and Painting curriculum. She received her BA in social studies from SUNY Albany, her MA from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in fine arts from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens

MICHAEL FUJITA received his BFA in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His sculptures have been shown in numerous exhibitions including at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Greenwich House Pottery, Cross MacKenzie Gallery, and the Clay Studio. Ceramics Workshop MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised on Long Island, NY. He enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Young Artists ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting in central NY for more than 20 years. Her commissions and work are included in many collections throughout the northeast. She received an AA in fine arts from MWPI/MVCC and a BFA in drawing and painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing
NIKI ENGLISH is an Apparel Designer who has been working in the NYC fashion industry for 10 years. She has worked for brands including Jessica Simpson, Vivienne Tam, and Ann Taylor as well as creating her own designs and accessories. Niki received a BS in apparel design from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Fashion / Adults / Teens
GAVIN LAW is a local videographer and owner of Gavin Law Videography and commercially focused Upstate Film Company. Gavin holds an AA in radio and television broadcasting from Herkimer County Community College. Video YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. She trained at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She has taught at several institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting / Adults ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPI/MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography JOSEPH MURPHY is an illustrator who uses atmosphere and light to create dream-like images for projects in book publishing, editorial, and entertainment fields. Joseph received his BFA and MFA in illustration from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Painting / Illustration MEGHAN PAGANO received her MFA in interdisciplinary art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in photography and art education from the College of Saint Rose and an AA in fine arts and illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists
MARK RUSSELL is a glass artist based in Tennessee where he runs The Firehall Glass Studio. He has taught and exhibited internationally and is included in several museum collections including the Corning Museum of Glass. Mark received his BFA at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and MS in glass sculpture at Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Glass Camps / Kids CARLIE SHERRY received her BFA in painting from SUNY Potsdam and her MFA in painting from Syracuse University. She is an adjunct instructor at Utica College and PrattMWP. Carlie has exhibited throughout the Northeast Painting / Drawing
SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting method and alternative materials. Jewelry / Kids / Adults TARO TAKIZAWA was born and raised in Japan. He received a BFA in 2-D/ printmaking from Central Michigan University and a MFA from Syracuse University in printmaking. He exhibits his printmaking, vinyl installations, paintings, drawings, and ceramics nationally and internationally. Printmaking KIM CARR VALDEZ received her BA in studio art from Hartwick College and her MFA in sculpture from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in New York City. Kim is an alumni of Sculpture Space and teaches 3D Design in the PrattMWP college program. Sculpture

In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: Local news outlets, MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, and MWPAI Social Media. PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule some adult classes canceled due to inclement weather or other emergencies however it is not always possible. KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teens.
COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS
Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of canceled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes canceled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is canceled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. It is extremely important that we have your correct email and phone number. Additionally in these circumstances, please note that MWPAI is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes.
REFUND POLICY
- A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. - A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar.
This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the canceled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.
DISMISSAL
Students are expected to abide by studio rules and to compose themselves in a courteous and polite manner at all times. MWPAI instructors may, with the approval of the CAE Director or Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section. Students may or may not be given a warning by the Instructor, Director, or Dean before dismissal.
