A

four-decade legend of jazz piano takes the stage as Concerts in the Court presents Joe Sample 8 p.m. Saturday, September 22 in the Museum of Art.

American pianist and composer Joe Sample is an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history. A founding member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders and a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano, Sample reaches back to the primary sources of jazz and soul music to create his personal interpretations of classics by such esteemed composers as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, the Gershwins, Al Jolson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and others. Sample began playing the piano when he was five years old as a student of the late great Curtis Mayo. After more than 20 years with The Crusaders, he now tours the world enjoying a successful solo career and has appeared as a guest on recordings by Miles Davis, B. B. King, Eric Clapton and Steely Dan.

Tickets for this performance and all Concerts in the Court are $26.50 for Members, $31.50 for General admission, and $16.50 for students. The museum opens at 7 p.m. so patrons may view the current exhibitions, socialize and visit the Gift Gallery. Concerts in the Court also feature a cash bar and special gallery talks at intermission. For tickets contact the Performing Arts Ticket Office at 797-0055 or 800-754-0797. Tickets are also available online at www.mwpai.org.

Important Sculpture on View in Museum

T

he Museum of Art is proud to exhibit Sol Lewitt’s Wall Piece #2, Cube Structure Based on Nine Modules, 1976, courtesy of the Feibes and Schmitt Collection.

Mr. James Feibes acquired the sculpture—or structure, as Lewitt referred to his three-dimensional art works—in 1978 because, for Feibes, an architect, Wall Piece #2 resonated with his own sensibilities: My architecture is composed within limits of systems which respond to client programs, site, structure and aesthetics. Lewitt was obsessed with "systems" and seemingly endless variations within them. Within these systems he defined for himself limits within he would explore possibilities. . . . This method of composition might be compared to Baroque music and variations on a simple melody. Lewitt’s approach to artmaking was conceptual and challenged tradition. Historically, sculpture has been perceived Sol Lewitt (1928-2007), Wall Piece #2, Cube Structure as mass and volume Based on Nine Modules, 1976, white painted wood, of heroic subjects, 43 ¼ x 43 ¼ x 43 ¼ in. He maintained that “The idea becomes the machine that makes the art,” and had his artworks produced by others according to his instructions. Longtime friends of MWP may remember that School of Art students created a Lewitt wall painting in the Museum in the late 1980s.
