KNUFFLE BUNNY: A CAUTIONARY MUSICAL

Giant Dancing Laundry FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 7 P.M. STANLEY THEATRE

(A performance for school groups will also be offered at 10 a.m.) It sounds so simple, just a quick trip to the Laundromat with Daddy, Trixie, and her beloved Knuffle Bunny. During all the fun, Knuffle Bunny mistakenly gets thrown into the washer. Trixie and Daddy leave and are headed through the park when Trixie realizes that bunny was left behind. Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical is filled with adventure, song, and gigantic dancing laundry as it tells a tale of firsts: a stuffed animal’s first trip in the laundry, a little girl’s first words, and a Daddy’s first time dealing with his child going “boneless.” Based on his beloved Caldecott Honor–winning picture book, sixtime Emmy Award winner Mo Willems joins Grammy Award–winning composer Michael Silversher (Elmo in Grouchland) in this Kennedy Center commissioned production that lovingly celebrates the heart and heartache that can only come from a family visit to the local Laundromat. We mentioned the giant dancing laundry, right?

KODO JAPANESE DRUM MASTERS

TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 8 P.M. STANLEY THEATRE For nearly 30 years, Kodo has explored the boundless potential of the ancient Japanese drum, the taiko. Armed with an arsenal of handmade drums varying in size from big to enormous, the performers convey the two meanings of the word kodo. The literal translation of the two Japanese characters is ‘drum’ and ‘child’ - expressing Kodo’s desire to play the taiko purely, with the heart of a child. The word kodo is also a homonym for ‘heartbeat’ - humanity’s most fundamental source of rhythm. Inspired by the powerful natural beauty of their home on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, Kodo infuses traditional forms with fresh global influences to create new musical expressions that are utterly unique.
