Considering a Major in Art or Design?
See what it would be like to study art or design and experience college life in PrattMWP College of Art and Design’s summer Precollege Program for high school students. PrattMWP is Pratt Institute’s upstate New York extension center in Utica, New York. PrattMWP’s campus features modern, full-equipped studios, on-campus residence halls, and the world-renowned Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art. The strength of your portfolio will be one of the most important factors when applying to art and design colleges and universities, and it will be a key component in determining your merit scholarship opportunities. Our Precollege Programs give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an intensive studio environment while living on campus, taking college level classes, and developing your visual portfolio. In addition, students who participate in the Precollege Program and apply to PrattMWP will be given special consideration during the admission decision process and the granting of merit-based scholarships.

Four-Week College Credit Program June 28 through July 23, 2021 REQUIRED COURSES Foundation: Modeled after Pratt’s first-year foundation program and taught by professional artists and designers, this course will expand your visual thinking, strengthen your portfolio and provide a basis for further study. Art History: This course will use the extraordinary resources of the internationally prominent Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art and the culturally rich Mohawk Valley to build a solid foundation in Art History. This course also serves as a complement to studio classes, helping students find meaningful connections between art history and the development of their own work. Portfolio Development: Your portfolio is a vital component of your college application to an art and design school or university with an art program. It is also often a factor in determining scholarships. Students will develop a body of work and learn what to include in their portfolio as well as gain experience in discussing the work produced.
ELECTIVE COURSES Students will be placed in one of the following electives based on their preference as indicated on the registration form. Graphic Design: Learn the basic skills necessary to design professional publications and develop an understanding of the computer software used by professionals in graphic and advertising design. Illustration: Learn to create compelling images that communicate a narrative. Through life studies in drawing and painting, and analysis of contemporary illustration, students develop technical and artistic skills for use in the commercial art world. Painting and Drawing: Develop skills of observation and expression working with the beautiful pigments and surfaces paint affords. This concentration course enhances students’ perceptual and aesthetic awareness through the creation of fine art, incorporating a variety of techniques, media, and subject matter. Photography: Capture life in the moment. Study 35mm camera operations, lighting techniques and darkroom procedures to achieve a broad-based knowledge of black and white photography. Learn exposing and developing film, making contact prints, and enlarging and finishing photographs. Digital and color will be introduced. Ceramics: Develop skill and coordination as a tool of the ceramic-forming process as you are introduced to hand-building techniques. Develop aesthetics in a contemporary, social, and historical context while also exploring the fundamental process of firing and glazing.
