HAND LETTERING + CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHY

Ages 18+ All Levels / Mario Colon This six-hour workshop focuses on the human form as the subject of a painting. Participants concentrate on concepts of proportion, anatomy, and how to render the figure in oil paint. This is a great class for beginners or more experienced painters wanting to work from a nude model. All materials are included for one painting.

Go big! Draw life-sized figures on six-foot lengths of paper. Instruction focuses on proportion, line quality, observation of the standing figure, and modeling of form through value. Nude models will be used.

Participants will create simple drawings to build their own animation creations in one session. This workshop is a great introduction to Adobe Photoshop and techniques including stop-motion animation and basic clip processing.

CERAMIC SCULPTURE: MOLD-MAKING + SLIP CASTING

Learn basic and intermediate techniques to make open-face and multi-part plaster molds for slip casting from hand-built forms and found objects. Each student generates cast porcelain pieces that are altered and combined to create ceramic sculptures. Instruction and demos focus on incorporating slip casting into handbuilding processes while allowing students to develop new ideas. Tuition includes plaster, porcelain slip, clay, and glaze. Salt firing is embraced by ceramic artists and potters because of the beautiful and unpredictable results that come from a salt-fired kiln. These four-week workshops will explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt. All works will be made from start to finish during the workshop.

Learn traditional chain making and create unusual linkages. Demos cover simple connections and move through twisting, weaving, texturing, forming, soldering, to fusing and soldering to create elegant chains. Students explore the elements and proportions of the body from life using nude models and through studying anatomical figures. Draw in space with steel. Beginning and more experienced students explore the basic metal shop techniques of welding and cutting to build metal sculptures in this one-week class. TEEN CERAMICS WORKSHOP: MASTERWORKS IN CLAY

Create functional relief pottery inspired by the masters. This project-based workshop begins by choosing a favorite artwork, translating a design to clay, and creating a hand-built clay pot which is then fired. Kids discover the magic of hand puppetry and learn its history while designing and constructing their own puppets, props, and stories using a variety of creative materials. PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in Metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMass Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelery / Metals

INSTRUCTORS RACHEL BARTUNEK owns Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in communications design through Pratt Institute focusing in print and typography. VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea, received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY. PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in art education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department and a long-time student in the Institute’s community ceramics program. Young Artists ALEXANDRIA COMPO attended PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in communications design and a concentration in Illustration. Alexandria is a freelance designer and illustrator who works with a variety of private, retail, musician, and creative clients. Illustration SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 and developed the Young Artists program. She received her BA degree in social studies from SUNY Albany, her MA from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in fine arts from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised on Long Island, NY. Michael enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Kids


ANNETTE GOLDMACHER is the Museum Education Coordinator at the MWPAI Museum of Art. She received her BA in Classical Studies and German from Colgate University and her MA in Museum Studies from Syracuse University’s Graduate Program. Art Appreciation ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting in central NY for more than 20 years. Her commissions and work are included in many collections throughout the northeast. She received an associate degree in fine arts from MWPI/MVCC and a BFA in drawing and painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing CHRISTI HARRINGTON is an Associate Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi holds an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art. Sculpture SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica City School District since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in art education from Syracuse University. Young Artists GAVIN LAW is a local videographer and owner of Gavin Law Videography and commercially focused Upstate Film Company. Gavin holds an associate degree in applied science, radio, and tv broadcasting from Herkimer County Community College. Video YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. She trained at the Academy of Realist Art, received a her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She has taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting / Adults ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPI/ MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography

AZITA MORADKHANI lives and works in Boston, MA. She holds a BFA from Tehran University of Art, and both an MA in art education and MFA in drawing, painting and sculpture from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. 2017/18 MWPAI Artist in Residence in Drawing and Painting MEGHAN PAGANO received her MFA in interdisciplinary art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in photography and art education from the College of Saint Rose and an associate degree in fine arts and illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists MICHAEL PATREI is the founder and a puppeteer of The Guild of Thespian Puppets. He has performed locally with his puppet troupe and handcrafted all of the original puppets. Michael is also a professional filmmaker whose documentary film Ballou has appeared on the BET Network. Kids / Puppets KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam and is an art instructor in the Utica City School District. He loves working with diverse students, ceramics, and the three-dimensional form. Kids / Teens EMILY REGER received her BFA in Environmental Design from East Carolina University and her K-12 Art Certification from the University of North Carolina. She has 20 years of enthusiastic visual arts teaching and creative outreach. Kids CARLIE SHERRY received her BFA in painting from SUNY Potsdam and her MFA in painting from Syracuse University. SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting and alternative materials. Jewelry / Metals / Kids

JON TAYLOR is the owner of ENJOINERY, a custom design and fabrication business collaborating with regional to international retail brands, designers, and private clients on fixtures and furniture. He received his BFA in sculpture from Alfred University and his MFA from UMass Dartmouth in wood and furniture design. Furniture KIM CARR VALDEZ received her BA in studio art from Hartwick College and her MFA in sculpture from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in New York City. Kim is an alumni of Sculpture Space and teaches 3D Design in the PrattMWP college program. Sculpture ELLA WEBER lives and works in Omaha, NE. She received her BFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and her MFA from the University of Kansas. Her artwork has been shown both nationally and internationally and she has participated in numerous residencies around the United States. 2017/18 MWPAI Artist in Residence in Printmaking

In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, Television & Radio: News, Social Media. PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule ADULT classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergencies, however, it is not always possible. KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teen classes.

COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS

REFUND POLICY

-A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. -A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the Registrar. -After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the canceled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.

Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of cancelled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes cancelled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is cancelled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund.
