Participants will create simple drawings to build one-of-a-kind animation creations in one afternoon. This workshop is a great introduction to Adobe Photoshop and techniques including stop motion animation and basic clip processing.

This six-hour workshop focuses on the human form as subject of a painting. Participants concentrate on concepts of proportion, anatomy, and how to render the figure in acrylic paint. This is great for beginning artists and more experienced painters wanting to work from a nude model. All materials included for one painting.

FIRING TICKETS When students are ready to fire, finished pieces are measured by volume and students are able to purchase firing tickets at the School of Art reception desk for $1.50 each.

OPEN STUDIO Students currently enrolled in a ceramics class may take advantage of open ceramic studio hours on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.


Develop the skills, dexterity, and coordination using the potter’s wheel as a tool of the ceramic-forming process. Students are introduced to handbuilding and throwing techniques. Aesthetics are developed in a contemporary, social, and historical context while also exploring the fundamental process of firing and glazing. Tuition includes clay and glaze. Salt firing is embraced by ceramic artists and potters because of the beautiful and unpredictable results that come from a salt-fired kiln. These four-week workshops will explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt. The processes of hand building for tile patterning and press molding for multiple repetitive pattern making are the primary modes of construction this semester. Make contemporary jewelry with unexpected materials. Experiment with wood, plastics, resin, cement fabrics, and collected objects to create cool elements for jewelry that go above and beyond metals. Students create samples of demonstrated materials/techniques and may combine these into a final statement piece. Beginners and experienced jewelers alike will enjoy the diverse techniques.

Learn the fundamentals of digital photography from the technical aspects of camera and lens operation to the artistry of composition. Creatively edit, develop, and print images in the digital darkroom computer lab using Photoshop CC. This course covers printmaking fundamentals while also exploring the appropriation of images and text from books, newspapers, photographs, the web, or pop-culture, as a method to collage visual content for poetic prints. ILLUSTRATION FOR GRAPHIC NOVELS + COMICS

This course is an introduction to the sequential art form of the Graphic Novel. Learn the contemporary history of comic art and graphic novels while improving drawing skills, character development, and storytelling. Create your own stop-motion animations while learning a wide range of skills including operating a camera and tripod, how the stop motion process works, creating characters, props, scenery and sound effects. Kids discover the magic of hand puppetry and learn its history while designing and constructing their own puppets, props, and stories using a variety of creative materials. Students gain puppeteering skills and develop a show with the help of instructor Michael, founder of The Guild of Thespian Puppets. Creativity and craft culminate in a performance for students and parents during the last class. Limited to 12 students. PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMASS Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelery / Metals

INSTRUCTORS VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea, received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY. Byun was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. She is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. Pottery / Ceramics SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 and developed the Young Artists program. She received her BA degree in Social Studies from SUNY Albany, MA from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in Fine Art from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens

ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting in Central NY for more than 20 years. Her commissions and work are included in many collections throughout the Northeast. She received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from MVCC/ MWPAI and a BFA in Drawing & Painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing

RACHEL BARTUNEK owns Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in Communication Design through Pratt Institute focusing in print and typography. Calligraphy / Book Arts / Portfolio PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department and long time student in the Institutes community ceramics program. Young Artists MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised in Long Island, NY. CHRISTI HARRINGTON is an Associate Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi holds an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art. Sculpture SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica schools since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in Art Education from Syracuse University. Young Artists GAVIN LAW is a local videographer and owner of Gavin Law Videography and commercially focused Upstate Film Company. Gavin holds an Associates in Applied Science, Radio, and TV Broadcasting from Herkimer County Community College. Video YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. She trained at the Academy of Realist Art, received a BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She has taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting / Adults CAITLYN NOTARO holds a BS in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design/Illustration from Nazareth College. She completed her Masters of Art Education at SUNY Oswego. Caitlyn is a freelance designer/illustrator and art teacher at Westmorland High School. Illustration / Teens / Adults ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPAI/ MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. MEGHAN PAGANO received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in Photography and Art Education from the College of Saint Rose and an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists MICHAEL PATREI is the founder and a puppeteer of The Guild of Thespian Puppets. He has performed locally with his puppet troupe and handcrafted all of the original puppets. Michael is also a professional filmmaker whose documentary film Ballou has appeared on the BET Network. Kids / Puppets KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam and is an art instructor in Utica schools. He loves working with diverse students, ceramics, and the three dimensional form. Kids / Teens AL SHAW is an art instructor at T.R. Proctor High School. He completed the MWPAI/MVCC program before receiving his BA in Art Education with a focus in Sculpture and Ceramics from Syracuse University. CARLIE SHERRY received her BFA in Painting from SUNY Potsdam and her MFA in Painting from Syracuse University. She is an Adjunct Instructor at Utica College and PrattMWP. Carlie has exhibited throughout New York. Painting / Drawing SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting and alternative materials. . Jewelry / Metals / Kids JON TAYLOR is the owner of ENJOINERY, a custom design and fabrication business collaborating with regional to international retail brands, designers, and private clients on fixtures and furniture. He received a sculpture BFA from Alfred University and an MFA from UMass Dartmouth in wood and furniture design. Furniture KIM CARR VALDEZ received her BA in Studio Art from Hartwick College and her MFA in Sculpture from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in New York city. Kim is an alumni of Sculpture Space and teaches 3D Design in the PrattMWP college program. ELLA WEBER lives and works in Omaha, NE. She has a BFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and MFA from the University of Kansas. Her artwork has been shown nationally and internationally and she has participated in numerous residencies around the United States. 2017/18 MWPAI Artist in Residence in Printmaking

In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, Television & Radio: News, Social Media. PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule ADULT classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergencies however it is not always possible. KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teen classes.

COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS

Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of cancelled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes cancelled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is cancelled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. It is extremely important that we have your correct email and phone number. Additionally, in these circumstances, please note that MWPAI is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes. -A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. -A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar. -After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the cancelled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.
