Students enrolled at the School of Art create in a studio environment that honors the fine arts tradition while exploring the rich potential of contemporary art and design. Harness the power of audio equipment and learn the technical art of mixing sound for musical performances. Instructor Mitch Eckler is the Technical Director for the MWPAI Performing Arts program and a professional session drummer who understands how venues and ambiance affect sound. Students are introduced to hardware, how to organize a mix, determine levels, and add effects in a classroom setting before mixing a live session at the end of the course. This class introduces students to desirable digital design programs (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and basic typography while merging those with techniques such as scanning, editing, hand drawing, collage, and photocopying. Learn the skills that will create the thrills in any future project. Applications of creative design range from informative to visual works of art. In a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Great for beginners and experienced painters, students are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model, learn basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch, then transfer and complete oil paintings. White is not always white! The color white in nature almost always has a cast; warm or cool, bright or neutral. Masters like Sargent and Monet used yellows, violets, and blues to build vibrant “whites” in compositions. Take inspiration from the season and dig deeper into color theory in this one-day workshop. CERAMIC SCULPTURE: MOLD-MAKING + SLIP CASTING

Learn basic and intermediate techniques to make open-face and multi-part plaster molds for slip casting from hand-built forms and found objects. Each student generates cast porcelain pieces that are altered and combined to create ceramic sculptures. Instruction and demos focus on incorporating slip casting into handbuilding processes while allowing for students to develop new ideas. Tuition includes plaster, porcelain slip, clay and glaze. JEWELRY + METALS
MWPAI’s jewelry studio is professionally equipped with a wide variety of equipment to support beginning through advanced techniques and processes. This includes an extensive array of hand tools; drills; buffing machines and tumblers; a hydraulic press; rolling mills; etching tank; casting and enameling equipment; stakes and forming equipment; six soldering stations, each equipped with a gas/air torch and annealing station.

Techniques include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, chain making, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones. Learn the timeless process of lost wax casting to craft a finished ring of an original design. Explore a variety of wax carving, sculpting, and finishing techniques, ultimately casting bronze or silver rings in the vacuum casting machine. This course is ideal for an introduction to jewelry or those looking to refine their casting skills. Students capture footage for assignments on a variety of their own digital devices and bring into the studio to learn skills in video recording, editing techniques and a basic introduction to programs such as Premiere Pro and After Effects. Studio time revolves around watching examples, learning software, and working on course assignments. In-class discussions focus on generating ideas, understanding observations and experiences of the world around you, and how to reflect those thoughts in a video format. Screen printing is a relatively simple medium that generates rich and colorful images in fine art prints, graphics, illustrations, and handmade goods. FIGURE SCULPTURE
Learn to elegantly represent the human gesture, mass, structure and surface form in three-dimensional space. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to figure sculpture, working in oil clay and water clay from a nude model. Students position armature and understand clay application processes. Anatomy and proportion are covered, as well as surface modeling techniques for bringing a figure study to completion. This class is ideal for beginners, experienced, and those looking to improve figurative work in any media. Materials list provided. THOMAS KNAUER holds a Masters of Fine Art from Ohio University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art and was a professor of art and design before he began designing fabric and quilts. Thomas is a published quilt design author, has designed six fabric collections for Andover Fabrics, writes an ongoing column for Quilters Newsletter, has quilts in numerous magazines, and actively exhibits in quilt shows and museums. Thomas’s work is included in MWPAI’s current exhibition, American Quilts: Sewn Stories.

QUILT WORKSHOP: WOOL APPLIQUE

Begin the satisfying journey into wool applique. Felted wool can be used in place of cotton on any quilt or handmade item that one would applique. Perfect the basic button-hole stitch with a “special method” for even stitches on circular forms while completing a floral and leaf patterned round table mat of the instructors design. The pattern includes a variety of stitches and bead accents. This workshop is geared toward curious beginners and those looking to complete a small project while learning new techniques. Full project kit included. LYDIA MIDDAUGH graduated from Lock Haven University with a degree in Special Education and received an MA from College of St. Rose. Lydia is both a full-time teacher at Lowville Academy and a prolific quilter. She has been “called to quilt,” finding inspiration for great designs rooted in life, nature, and humor. She enthusiastically designs, creates, and teaches wool applique to students in her own studio and around Utica.

Aspiring art students applying to colleges will need to present an exceptional portfolio for evaluation. CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP, Mohawk Valley Community College, Empire State University and Kirkland Art Center. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMASS Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelery / Metals

INSTRUCTORS VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. She was born in Seoul, Korea and educated in the US, receiving her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I. and BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. Byun was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. Pottery / Ceramics
ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting her paintings in Central NY for more than 20 years. In addition to being honored numerous commissions, her work is included in private collections throughout the Northeast. She received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from MVCC/ Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and a BFA in Drawing & Painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing MADELINE BARTLEY was born in Louisville, Kentucky and attended Murray State University where she received her B.F.A. in printmaking and drawing. She will earn her M.F.A. from Syracuse University’s College of Visual Performing Arts in 2016. Madeline exhibits internationally, is a recipient of the Creative Opportunity Grant, and recently returned from the Turner Residency in Los Angeles, CA. Printmaking RACHEL BARTUNEK is the owner of Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in Communication Design through Pratt Institute with a focus in print and typography. Her freelance work includes creating brand presence, surface design, and hand lettering. Calligraphy / Book Arts / Portfolio PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She is a certified art teacher in Pennsylvania, and has taught art in grades K-12 in public and parochial schools in suburban Philadelphia and Lockport, NY. SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she developed the Young Artists program. Sandra has previously taught painting and art history at SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. She received her bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from SUNY Albany, masters from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in Fine Art from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens

MITCH ECKLER graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a B.A. in Music Industry. He is currently the Technical Director at MWPAI. Mitch has toured and played with many bands working across all genres. Among other projects, Mitch is the drummer for the progressive - experimental power trio, Jason Davis and The New Philosophers and one third of the folks/blues trio, The Old Main. Audio MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised in Long Island, NY. Michael is active in childcare, starting a Family Day Care with his wife and homeschooling their son. Michael enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Kids CHRISTI HARRINGTON is an Associate Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi completed an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art while also working with several public sculpture artists. Christi has several public figurative commissions installed in the region. Sculpture SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica schools since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in Art Education from Syracuse University. Kids

YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. Yulia completed rigorous training at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She worked in production for Jeff Koons and taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting

BRIANNA MILLER is a graphic artist/designer/illustrator based out of Portland, OR. She holds a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Communication Design. Both her commercial and fine art work reflects interests in color theory, experiential design, and synesthesia. Brianna’s designs and illustrations have been published nationally. Artist-in-Residence / Design ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPAI/ MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography
CAITLYN NOTARO holds a BS in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design/Illustration from Nazareth College. She completed her Masters of Art Education at SUNY Oswego. Animation / Kids KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam. As a certified art teacher, Kyle has the privilege of working with diverse students of all ages. Through his artistic investigations, he has found a long lasting love for working with ceramics and the three dimensional form. Kids CARLIE SHERRY received her BFA in Painting from SUNY Potsdam and her MFA in Painting from Syracuse University. She is an Adjunct Instructor at Utica College and PrattMWP. Painting SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture from Pratt Institute after attending PrattMWP. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting method incorporating alternative mediums. EEVA SIIVONEN is a filmmaker originally from Helsinki, Finland. She holds a BFA and an MFA in documentary film directing from Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture. She also holds an MFA in Video Art from Syracuse University where she studied as a Fulbright scholar. REFUND POLICY
A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting.
After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address. In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account. DISMISSAL
MWPAI instructors may, with the approval of the Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section. Enrolled students may not bring children, family members, friends, or pets to the studio during class time.
