Develop skill, dexterity, and coordination using the potter’s wheel as a tool of the ceramic-forming process as you are introduced to hand-building and throwing techniques. CERAMIC SCULPTURE: MOLD MAKING + SLIP CASTING

Learn techniques to make open-face and multi-part plaster molds for slip casting from hand-built forms and found objects. Each student generates cast porcelain pieces that are altered and combined to create ceramic sculptures, allowing students to develop new ideas. Demos focus on incorporating slip casting into hand- building processes. Tuition includes plaster, porcelain slip, clay, and glaze. Salt firing is embraced by ceramic artists and potters because of the beautiful and unaticipated results that come from a salt-fired kiln. These four-week workshops will explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt. All works will be made from start to finish during the workshop. This summer’s workshop explores form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt and wood. Works will be made from start to finish during the workshop. Develop a contemporary and historic understanding of the unique qualities and processes of salt- and wood-firing and learn to work with the ancient processes of the Anagama kiln. The resulting colors and textures are exclusive to the process and to each fire. Nurture and grow your personal aesthetic in a communal atmosphere. Step outside the ordinary and create in the extraordinary in this two-week exploration of salt and wood on the MWPAI and PrattMWP College of Art & Design campus. PRINTMAKING Learn how to screen print using various hand and photographic methods in a professional print studio. This course covers printmaking fundamentals while also exploring the appropriation of images and text as a method to collage visual content for poetic prints. Screenprinting is a versatile process that can be used for fine art or commercial projects beyond this class. Materials list provided. Craft a bezel setting for a cabochon–a smooth, convex, oval stone–to create a super cool pendant necklace! Portraits Of People 18 + / All Levels Michael Hicks, MWPAI Artist in Residence Explore in-depth the various approaches for making revelatory and engaging portraits of people, both out in the world and in the studio. Topics explored will be approaching strangers, working with models, location scouting, using props, improvisation, developing a vocabulary of poses to use, camera settings, using artificial lighting, and postproduction techniques. PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO teaches design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP. He received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting

INSTRUCTORS JOELLA BURT is a PrattMWP alumni and received her BFA in painting and K-12 teaching certification from SUNY Potsdam. She has exhibited regionally and expanded her digital and traditional painting practice through teaching seminars and offering works for sale locally. Digital Painting / Teens VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea, received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY. Veronica was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. She is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. Pottery / Ceramics PAULA CARUANA received her BS in art education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She has taught K-12 art in public and private schools. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art department, and a longtime student in the Institute’s community ceramics program. Young Artists ALEXANDRIA MARIE COMPO attended PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in communication design and a concentration in illustration. Alexandria is a freelance designer and illustrator who works with a variety of private, retail, musician, and creative clients across multiple platforms. Drawing / Adults SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she founded and developed the Teen Drawing and Painting curriculum. She received her BA in social studies from SUNY Albany, her MA from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in fine arts from MWPAI.

MARY BETH FIORENTINO’s jewelry is centered around experimental enameling and hand fabrication methods combined with her background in design. She holds an MFA in Metal from the State University of New York at New Paltz and a BFA in graphic design from SUNY Fredonia. Jewelry / Adults MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised on Long Island, NY. He enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Young Artists ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting in Central NY for more than 20 years. Her commissions and work are included in many collections throughout the northeast. She received an AA in fine arts from MWPI/MVCC and a BFA in drawing and painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing CHRISTI HARRINGTON is a Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi holds an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art. Sculpture/

MICHAEL HICKS received his BA in Political Science from Rutgers University. He then attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies for Documentary Photography Multimedia before pursuing his MFA in Photography at Syracuse University. JANET LOREN HILL received her BFA from the University of Washington and her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has exhibited at numerous galleries nationally including Field Projects Gallery (NY, NY), Blindfold Gallery (Seattle, WA) and Stone Gallery’s 2017 exhibition of Boston Young Contemporaries. Recent residencies include Vermont Studio Center, Wassaic Project, and the Beijing Royal School in China.

NIKI ENGLISH is an Apparel Designer who has been working in the NYC fashion industry for 10 years. She has worked for brands including Jessica Simpson, Vivienne Tam, and Ann Taylor as well as creating her own designs and accessories. Niki received a BS in apparel design from the Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

GAVIN LAW is a local videographer and owner of Gavin Law Videography and commercially focused Upstate Film Company. Gavin holds an AA in radio, and TV broadcasting from Herkimer County Community College. Video YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. She trained at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in Manhattan. She has taught at several institutions including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting / Adults ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPI/MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography JOSEPH MURPHY is an illustrator who uses atmosphere and light to create dreamlike images for projects in book publishing, editorial, and entertainment fields. Joseph received his BFA and MFA in illustration from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Painting / Illustration AMY FRANCISCO-NUGENT is an artist and museum educator. She received her BFA in Art Photography from Syracuse University and worked as an English teacher in South Korea. Her personal work combines photography, fibers, sculpture, and digital media. RACHEL ORTEGA knew she wanted to be an artist and teacher by the time she was 12. She received a BFA from Alfred University. She works in the Utica City Schools as an art teacher and loves making art with kids and being inspired by their creativity and personalities. Kids MEGHAN PAGANO received her MFA in interdisciplinary art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in photography and art education from the College of Saint Rose and an AA in fine arts and illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam and is an art instructor at West Canada Valley CSD. He loves working with diverse students, ceramics, and three-dimensional form. Kids / Teens CARLIE SHERRY received her BFA in painting from SUNY Potsdam and her MFA in painting from Syracuse University. She is an adjunct instructor at Utica College and PrattMWP. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: Local news outlets, MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, and MWPAI Social Media. PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule some adult classes canceled due to inclement weather or other emergencies however it is not always possible. KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teen classes.

COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS

Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of canceled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes canceled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is canceled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. It is extremely important that we have your correct email and phone number. Additionally, in these circumstances, please note that MWPAI is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes.

REFUND POLICY

A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar. After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the canceled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.

DISMISSAL

Students are expected to abide by studio rules and to compose themselves in a courteous and polite manner at all times. MWPAI instructors may, with the approval of the CAE Director or Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section. Students may or may not be given a warning by the Instructor, Director, or Dean before dismissal. For full policies, please visit mwpai.org.
