summer! ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD'S CREATIVE SIDE WITH MWPAI’S KIDS ART INSTITUTE.

Weeklong morning classes immerse kids in art making, material exploration, and social engagement on the campus of the nationally ranked PrattMWP College of Art and Design. MIX N’ MATCH Drawing, painting, and animation are offered for one, two, three, or four weeks. Clay and sculpture classes are offered in two-week sessions. Course content changes each session so students may register for multiple classes, consecutive or not.

PLEASE NOTE: Parents are asked to provide a snack for break time and a smock to protect clothing. All other supplies are included in class tuition. IMPORTANT: To ensure the age appropriateness of the curriculum, children must meet the age requirement listed with each course description by the beginning of class. No exception.

Our youngest students engage in the process of creating art through hands-on exploration as they discover vibrant compositions through a playful understanding of color, collage, painting, and sculpture. Children develop creative skills using a wide variety of media by learning how to draw from observation, memory, and imagination. During daily classes, they experiment with an assortment of drawing and painting tools, make new friends and participate in fun outdoor activities during snack break. Sculpt every day. During a two-week session, children use a variety of media including clay and glaze, recycled materials, fibers, plaster, wire and more as they build sculptures. Students will learn about famous sculptors and ceramists, while creating in the School of Art’s beautiful historic ceramics studio. Supplies provided. Limited to 15 students. CLAY! FOR YOUNG ARTISTS Ages 9 – 12 / Paula Caruana

In this clay exploration extravaganza for the creative pre-teen, projects range from hand-built functional pottery to ceramic sculpture inspired by famous artists. Lessons will focus on learning about popular and historic artists, sculptors, ceramists, and cultural icons. Visits to the Museum of Art will lead the way for fun and exciting projects over the daily two-week session. Supplies provided. Limited to 12 students.

STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

Students learn a range of skills while creating their own stop-motion animations during a one-week class, from learning to operate a camera, tripod, and how the stop-motion process works to creating characters, props, scenery and sound effects. Students will see artist examples, plan their own storylines, and produce several animations. Supplies provided. Limited to 10 students. SUMMER INTENSIVE TEEN DRAWING + PAINTING Ages 13 - 17 / All Levels / Sandra DeVisser

This summer intensive is the perfect class for teens who want to seriously improve their art game, advance their skills and meet others who share their interest in the arts. This daily class will focus on drawing from observation and is designed specifically for teenagers who want to grow creatively and explore the visual arts. Supplies provided. Explore the contemporary history of comic art and graphic novels while improving drawing skills, character development, and storytelling. Teens learn the potter’s wheel, hand-building techniques, glazing, and firing to create projects from bowls to sculpture. Instruction is tailored to students’ individual skill level. ROBOTICS: BUILD, CODE, EXPLORE Ages 13 - 17 / All Levels / Alexis Walker

Build a robot with ultrasonic sensors to navigate obstacles. Applying basic electrical concepts to hardware, motors, and LEDs, teens assemble an autonomous robot from scratch. Students learn to program and troubleshoot microprocessors using Arduino -- A free, open-source programming platform that allows students to continue learning and create new projects outside of the classroom. WORK HAND LETTERING + CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHY SHOP Ages 18+, 16+ / All Levels / Rachel Bartunek Beautiful handwriting is not needed to design and create a beautiful approach to nontraditional lettering. Learn to pencil sketch, trace, and ink a favorite quote in this two-part, six-hour workshop. Gain the skills to demonstrate visual hierarchies in text, illustrate letters with confidence, and create dynamic compositions. Materials and calligraphy kit are included in tuition.

Realize your vision of creating a lively children’s book. Students with ongoing projects or experience will begin creating the final illustrations for their books. Demos revolved around techniques in each student’s preferred medium and color theory. Learn how to create a “dummy book” for presentation to publishers. Materials list provided. In a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Beginners and experienced painters are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model, learn basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch, then transfer and complete oil paintings. Not a master? No Problem. You don’t need to be a master to learn from the masters during this rare opportunity to paint inside the institute’s Museum of Art. Enjoy working in the museum’s 19th Century galleries interpreting, painting, and learning from artworks in the collection. The instructor guides students in the copy process and caters instruction to individual levels. First class meets in the studios at the School of Art. Previous knowledge of oils is helpful but not required. Copiest guidelines, required materials list, and French easels are provided. Digital photography is a powerful medium with infinite possibilities. Learn the fundamentals of digital photography from the technical aspects of camera and lens operation to the artistry of composition. Creatively edit, develop, and print images in the digital darkroom using Photoshop CC. Whether your interest is fine art, portraiture, event photography, product styling, or family photos, this course provides technical instruction to help realize your artistic vision. The School of Art is thrilled to host this fun event for its ninth year. Children are invited to participate in age-specific categories: 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14 - 18. Budding artists have the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents by completing a timed chalk drawing on a single sidewalk slab. Winners will be chosen from each group. All are welcome to come to this free and fun community event.

This workshop will explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt and wood. Works will be made start to finish during the workshop. Participants develop a contemporary and historic understanding of the unique qualities and processes of salt and wood firing. The resulting colors and textures are totally unique to the process, and to each fire. Nurture and grow your personal aesthetic. Step outside the ordinary and live in the extraordinary in this exceptional two-week experience of creating clay works, decorating, and firing. FACULTY

PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMASS Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelry/Metals

INSTRUCTORS VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea and educated in the US, receiving her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I. and BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. Byun was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. She is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. Pottery / Ceramics SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she developed the Young Artists program. Sandra has previously taught painting and art history at SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. She received her bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from SUNY Albany, masters from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in Fine Art from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens MICHAEL FUJITA received his BFA in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute and MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Fujita’s sculpture has been shown in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Greenwich House Pottery, Cross MacKenzie Gallery, and the Clay Studio. ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting her paintings in Central NY for more than 20 years. In addition to being honored numerous commissions, her work is included in private collections throughout the Northeast. She received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from MVCC/ MWPAI and a BFA in Drawing & Painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing

RACHEL BARTUNEK is the owner of Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in Communication Design through Pratt Institute with a focus in print and typography. Her freelance work includes creating brand presence, surface design, and hand lettering. Calligraphy / Book Arts / Portfolio PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She is a certified art teacher in Pennsylvania, and has taught art in grades K-12 in public and parochial schools in suburban Philadelphia and Lockport, NY. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department and long time student in the Institutes community ceramics program. Young Artists


MICHAEL GIORDANI graduated from PrattMWP and Pratt Institute with a BFA. He is a Utica transplant, born in New York City and raised in Long Island, NY. Michael enjoys nothing more than fostering the creative spark in others. Kids SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica schools since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in Art Education from Syracuse University. Young Artists YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. Yulia completed rigorous training at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She worked in production for Jeff Koons and taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting / Adults CAITLYN NOTARO holds a BS in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design/Illustration from Nazareth College. She completed her Masters of Art Education at SUNY Oswego. Caitlyn is a freelance designer/illustrator and art teacher at Westmorland High School. Illustration / Teens / Adults MEGHAN MURPHY PAGANO received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in Photography and Art Education from the College of Saint Rose and an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from MVCC. Animation / Young Artists KYLE PUMILIO received received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam. As a certified art teacher, Kyle has the privilege of working with diverse students of all ages. Through his artistic investigations, he has found a long lasting love for working with ceramics and the three dimensional form. Kids / Teens SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting method incorporating alternative mediums. Jewelry / Metals / Kids

ALEXIS WALKER received her Associates in Graphic Design from MVCC and is currently pursuing a dual degree in Computer Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering technology at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Alexis merges design with interests in software, microprocessors, and sensor technology. Robotics / Teens JAMIE YOUNG is a professional and fine art photographer. His client list includes Syracuse University, American Girl, Sundance Cinemas, The New York Times, among others. Jamie teaches photography at PrattMWP and wood/metal fabrication at Syracuse University’s School of Design. Photography

KIM CARR VALDEZ received her BA in Studio Art from Hartwick College and her MFA in Sculpture from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in New York city. Kim is an alumni of SculptureSpace and teaches 3D Design in the PrattMWP college program.

Partial scholarships for each semester may be available to kids, teens, and adults who demonstrate significant financial need. Awards are limited and the amounts vary based on the quantity of qualified applications received. When granted, award amounts usually offset a portion of the tuition for one course only. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency cancellation, announcements will be made on the following: MWPAI website, School of Art Reception: Automated cancellation message, Television & Radio: News, Social Media. PLEASE NOTE: We generally do not contact students individually by phone or email for inclement weather cancellations. MWPAI and our instructors make reasonable efforts to reschedule ADULT classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergencies however it is not always possible. KIDS + TEENS: Because of heavy classroom usage between the college program and other CAE classes, we do not offer makeup classes for children and teen classes.

COURSE CHANGES + CANCELLATIONS

Course catalog and class listing must be considered informational and not binding on the Institute. Community Arts Education classes are subject to minimum enrollment guidelines. We make every effort to notify students of cancelled classes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes cancelled as late as the day of the first class meeting. If your course is cancelled, you are contacted and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. It is extremely important that we have your correct email and phone number. Additionally, in these circumstances, please note that MWPAI is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes.

REFUND POLICY

This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds of fees take up to four weeks to process and take the form of the original payment method for the cancelled course. Checks are mailed directly to the student’s home address. Official Withdrawal Forms may be downloaded from the website or obtained at the School of Art reception desk.

• A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. • A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar. • After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.
