SOUND CHECK: INTRO TO LIVE MUSIC AUDIO

Ages 16 + / Beginner / Mitch Eckler

Harness the power of audio equipment and learn the technical art of mixing sound for musical performances. Instructor Mitch Eckler is the technical director for the MWPAI Performing Arts program and a professional session drummer who understands how venues and ambiance affect sound. Students are introduced to hardware, how to organize a mix, determine levels, and add effects in a classroom setting before mixing a live session at the end of the course. ZINE DESIGN + PRODUCTION

Ages 16+ / All Levels / Brianna Miller, Artist in Residence Let the fundamentals of graphic design merge with art while creating your own ‘zine’, a self published magazine or pamphlet. This class teaches desirable Adobe Suite digital design programs (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign) in combination with scanning, editing, hand drawing, collage, and photocopying that can carry into any future design project. General typography and methods of binding are also covered. Zines range from informative to visual works of art. At the end of the course, students have gained design skills, produced a zine, and have an opportunity to swap and share mass-produced copies. NARRATIVE ILLUSTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Narrative illustration comes in many styles. Students will create lively children’s books working in various mediums including watercolor and hand drawing. Studio discussions will explore books that have been awarded the annual Caldecott Medal (most distinguished American picture book for children) and talk about what makes their illustrations winners. Students begin with the basic elements of drawing – line, gesture, mark, mass, shape, value and texture – with emphasis on observation from life and the building blocks of great composition. Drawings generated in this class will hone and improve skills needed for other art mediums, particularly painting. Material list provided upon registration. Ages 18+ / All levels / Annette Gurdo Interacting and translating the human form to image has been an impassioned artistic impluse since prehistory. This evening class explores gesture drawing, contour drawing, and other methods of recording a direct response to the figure on paper. A nude model will be used. PAINTING TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS

This course provides an excellent painting foundation through a structured program designed for beginning students. Projects focusing on composition and design, color mixing and essential painting techniques will be investigated. Acrylic paints are preferred. INTRO TO OIL PAINTING PORTRAITURE

In executing a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Students are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model and learning basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch to then transfer and complete an oil painting. Students will complete a finished painting and gain a wealth of knowledge for exploring classical oil painting techniques. Student required materials list provided. LANDSCAPE PAINTING

Painting en plein aire (in plain air) will be offered at the beginning of the course, weather permitting, The latter half of the semester delves into studio work from images and sketches. URBAN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

Ages 18 + / All Levels / Yulia Levkovich Artist and instructor Yulia Levkovich leads this class on an exploration of Utica as urban landscape in oil, acrylic, or watercolor. Students will create authentic and vivid representations of Utica’s dynamic streetscapes. The first class takes place in the studio. Students provide their own supplies and transportation. Ages 18 + / All Levels / Chris Cirillo This class is designed to accommodate beginners and experienced painters and encourage each artist’s intentions and personal development as they investigate painting as a craft as well as a form of expression. Celebrates intensive technical study, problem solving, and dialogue with artists and artworks of the past. Through this tradition of close observation of a masterpiece, artists will receive personalized instruction in oils and the unique opportunity to utilize artworks from the MWPAI collection. Some previous knowledge of oils is required. A materials list will be provided. First two classes take place in the School of Art studio building before moving to the museum galleries. CERAMICS The pottery studio encompasses 3,500 square feet of the historic Ceramics and Sculpture Studio Building. Equipment includes a dozen electric wheels, a slab roller, extruder, mixers, electric kilns, and a Bailey Car kiln. The anagama and salt kiln shed is the hub for workshops and for learning the fundamentals of wood firing. Students utilize the Vincent R. Clemente Ceramic Resource Room. OPEN STUDIO Ceramic and pottery students may take advantage of Open Studio Hours in the Ceramic Studio on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These hours are only available for the duration of the course.


INTRODUCTION TO POTTERY: THROWING FOR BEGINNERS

Ages 18+ / Beginner / Veronica Byun

You have always wanted to learn pottery, so start by developing the skills, dexterity, and coordination required to use the potter’s wheel as a tool of the ceramic-forming process. Students are introduced to various techniques including handbuilding and throwing. Aesthetics are developed in a contemporary, social, and historical context while also exploring the fundamental process of firing and glazing. Tuition includes clay and glaze. Reasonable firing fees are charged based on volume of work produced. A starter kit of tools may be purchased at the School of Art. CERAMIC SCULPTURE

Ages 18+ / All Levels / Veronica Byun There is more to creating beautiful and functional ceramic pieces than throwing on the wheel. This class explores the extensive range of sculptural possibilities of clay through hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, slab construction, extruding and press mold. Students can transform found shapes, images or objects, utilizing concepts gathered from cultural icons and contemporary art. Tuition includes clay and glaze. JEWELRY + METALS

MWPAI’s jewelry studio is professionally equipped with a wide variety of equipment to support beginning through advanced techniques and processes. This includes an extensive array of hand tools; drills; buffing machines and tumblers; a hydraulic press; rolling mills; etching tank; casting and enameling equipment; metal forms; six soldering stations, each equipped with a gas/air torch and annealing station. Students can conveniently purchase non-ferrous metal (copper, brass, and silver) and consumable supplies (saw blades, solder and sandpaper) for classes right from the School of Art reception desk.

Learn basic techniques through demonstrations and projects. Techniques include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, chain making, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones. Students can utilize class and lab time to practice techniques and make finished pieces of jewelry. This class requires use of hand tools, machinery and torches. Appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes must be worn. The starter materials kit is purchased at the School of Art Reception desk. OPEN STUDIO Adult jewelry students may take advantage of designated open lab time on Saturday mornings to continue working independently at no additional cost while currently enrolled in a 6 or 12 week course. A lab schedule will be distributed at the beginning of the class.

Ages 18+ / All Levels / Shannon Stockbridge Whether crafting a charm for a loved one or shaping a ring for personal adornment, this six-session class in the jewelry studio is all about creating BLING! Learn the timeless process of lost wax casting to craft a finished ring of an original design. Explore a variety of wax carving, sculpting, and finishing techniques, ultimately casting bronze or silver rings in the vacuum casting machine. This course is ideal for an introduction to jewelry or those looking to refine their casting skills. This course is designed for students who have successfully completed the 12-week beginning level jewelry class and are ready to learn a variety of new techniques and practical advice from a professional metalsmith. Ages 18+ / Beginners / Eeva Siivonen, Artist in Residence This class is an excellent introduction to video production through techniques and processes taught on state of the art computers and editing programs. Students will capture footage for assignments on a variety of their own digital devices and bring into the studio to learn skills in video recording, editing techniques and a basic introduction to programs such as Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and After Effects. Studio time will revolve around watching examples, learning software, and working on course assignments. In class discussions focus on generating ideas, understanding observations and experiences of the world around you, and how to reflect those thoughts in a video format. Learn the fundamentals of digital photography from the technical aspects of camera and lens operation to the artistry of composition. Revel in the versatile production of your own screen prints. Screen printing is a relatively simple medium that generates rich and colorful images in fine art prints, graphics, illustrations, and handmade goods. Images can be made from a cast of techniques including hand-drawn separations, photographic film, digital separations, photocopies, as well as, experimental processes. Students learn from instructor demos and gain tips and tricks to mixing inks and coating screens. Students collectively process pulp into paper, then experiment molding fibrous, upcycled, deconstructed, and natural materials to produce unique, high-quality papers which are used to create several personalized handmade books. Students will learn to design simple books and gain knowledge of multiple bindings, structures, and forms, and intricate finished books of unique papers. Materials list provided. “Beauty is the harmony of function and form.” - Alvar Aalto. This class is an introduction to the fundamental skills necessary to produce wood furniture. Students will become familiar with the safe use of hand and power tools while exploring various joinery techniques, design, finishes, and efficient planning of a furniture project. Each student will build a custom bench during class with an emphasis placed on guiding and preparing students for their own designs and projects beyond this course. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to figure sculpture, working in oil clay and water clay from a nude model. Students position armature and understand clay application processes. Anatomy and proportion are covered, as well as surface modeling techniques for bringing a figure study to completion. PROFESSORS CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP, Mohawk Valley Community College, Empire State University and Kirkland Art Center. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMASS Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelery / Metals BRYAN MCGRATH joined the faculty in 1985 as head of the ceramics department. His work has been featured in A Potter’s Professional Handbook, by Steven Branfman and Studio Potter magazine. Bryan has exhibited internationally and his research travels have taken him to Japan and Ireland. Private collections include The Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art, Oklahoma University, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University Museum of Art, and MWPAI. Pottery

VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN is the Assistant Coordinator and Instructor of Ceramic Arts at MWPAI. She was born in Seoul, Korea and educated in the US, receiving her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I. and BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. Byun was a 2013-2015 Artist in Residence. Pottery / Ceramics

SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she developed the Young Artists program. Sandra has previously taught painting and art history at SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. She received her bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from SUNY Albany, masters from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in Fine Art from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting her paintings in Central NY for more than 20 years. In addition to being honored numerous commissions, her work is included in private collections throughout the Northeast. She received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from MVCC/ Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and a BFA in Drawing & Painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing MEGHAN ATKINSON attended PrattMWP and went on to complete her BS in Visual Art Education at SUNY New Paltz with a concentration in Printmaking. She is a certified K-12 visual arts teacher working in the Syracuse school districts. Kids MADELINE BARTLEY was born in Louisville, Kentucky and attended Murray State University where she received her B.F.A. in printmaking and drawing. She will earn her M.F.A. from Syracuse University’s College of Visual Performing Arts in 2016. Madeline exhibits internationally, is a recipient of the Creative Opportunity Grant, and recently returned from the Turner Residency in Los Angeles, CA. RACHEL BARTUNEK is the owner of Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in Communication Design through Pratt Institute with a focus in print and typography. Her freelance work includes creating brand presence, surface design, and hand lettering. Design / Workshop ALEXANDRIA COMPO attended PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Communications Design and a concentration in Illustration. Alexandria is a freelance designer and illustrator who works with a variety of private, retail, musician, and creative clients. Teens PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She is a certified art teacher in Pennsylvania, and has taught art in grades K-12 in public and parochial schools in suburban Philadelphia and Lockport, NY. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department. Kids MITCH ECKLER graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a B.A. in Music Industry. He is currently the Technical Director at MWPAI. Mitch has toured and played with many bands working across all genres. Among other projects, Mitch is the drummer for the progressive - experimental power trio, Jason Davis and The New Philosophers and one third of the folks/blues trio, The Old Main. Audio CHRISTI HARRINGTON is an Associate Professor of Art at MVCC. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and began studying the figure while abroad in Italy. Christi completed an MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art while also working with several public sculpture artists. SARAH TUCKERMAN KILIAN has taught in the Utica schools since 1990. She is a graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and received her MS in Art Education from Syracuse University. Kids

CAITLYN KNEPKA holds a BS in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design/Illustration from Nazareth College. She completed her Masters of Art Education at SUNY Oswego. Caitlyn is a freelance designer and illustrator. Illustration / Design / Teens YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter. Yulia completed rigorous training at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. She worked in production for Jeff Koons and taught at several institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Painting


BRIANNA MILLER is a graphic artist/designer/illustrator based out of Portland, OR. She holds a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Communication Design. Both her commercial and fine art work reflects interests in color theory, experiential design, and synesthesia. Brianna’s designs and illustrations have been published nationally. Artist-in-Residence / Design ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPAI/ MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography MEGHAN MURPHY PAGANO received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in Photography and Art Education from the College of Saint Rose and an Associates degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from MVCC. Animation / Kids LISA ORISTIAN found her artistic voice through her first life-changing Metals for Jewelry class and is now privileged to be able to teach jewelry to others through MWPAI’s Community Arts classes. Lisa is the owner of Kissing Dog Designs, a small artisan jewelry business. Jewelry / Metals KYLE PUMILIO received his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam. As a certified art teacher, Kyle has the privilege of working with diverse students of all ages. Through his artistic investigations, he has found a long lasting love for working with ceramics and the three dimensional form. Kids

AL SHAW is the Chair of Art and Music at T.R. Proctor High School. He completed the MWPAI/MVCC program before receiving his bachelor’s degree in Art Education, with a focus in Sculpture and Ceramics from Syracuse University. Al completed his master’s degree at Syracuse University, with an extended study in Art Education. Painting SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture from Pratt Institute after attending PrattMWP. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting method incorporating alternative mediums. Jewelry / Metals JON TAYLOR is the owner of ENJOINERY, a custom design and fabrication business collaborating with regional to international retail brands, designers, and private clients on fixtures and furniture. EEVA SIIVONEN is a filmmaker originally from Helsinki, Finland. She holds a BFA and an MFA in documentary film directing from Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture. She also holds an MFA in Video Art from Syracuse University where she studied as a Fulbright scholar. DISMISSAL

MWPAI instructors may, with the approval of the Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section.

REFUND POLICY

A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar. After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address. In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account. Allow four weeks to process.
