Az előadás a teremtés fogalmából indul ki, illetve abból a sokféle tör ténetből, melyeket az emberek mesélnek egymásnak a kezdetről. Ez vetette fel az egyszerű kérdést: milyen lenne az a színházi est, amely mindennek a kezdetével kezdődik? Milyen szerepeket osztanának ki? Milyen szereplőket látnánk szívesen? Egy darab agyagra is szükség lesz? És mindenekelőtt, hogyan végződne az egész?

De térjünk vissza az elejére. A sötétségből megszületik a fény, az isteni lé legzet belélegeztetik, az édenkertben egymásra talál az első szerelmespár. Megteszik első lépéseiket, menedéket keresnek az elemek elől, majd, hála Istennek, megfizethető lakásra lelnek. A sors aztán az élet hullámvasútjá ra ülteti a fiatal párt. Sorra születnek a gyerekek, s mindegyik csak növeli a családot szétszakadással fenyegető centrifugális erőt.

A Familie Flöz ebben a darabban bővíti eszköztárát, az ismerős maszkok mögött most láthatóvá válnak maguk a színészek is. Miközben zenélnek, énekelnek, filmeznek, beszélnek vagy csak hangokat adnak ki, a társulat a szemünk láttára alkotja meg a maszkok világát.

Kölcsönadják testüket a szereplőknek, és saját kezükbe veszik a maszkok sorsát. Az alkotó és a teremtmény interakciójából bomlik ki a történet. A Hokuspokus cím a kifejezés egyik lehetséges eredetével, a latin „Hoc est enim corpus meum” („Íme, ez az én testem”) népies elferdítésével játszik. Vagy az egész mégiscsak egy bűvészmutatvány?

Legújabb produkciójával, a Berlinben 2022. június 8-án bemutatott Hokuspokusszal a társulat új kalandra vállalkozik a stílus terén. Az előadás elmond valamit a színházról, a csodák dobozáról is, amelyet azért kere sünk fel, hogy a hazugság és az igazság játékát ünnepeljük. A rendező Hajo Schüler – Michael Vogellel együtt a társulat alapítója és művészeti veze tője – a következőket mondta a darab létrejöttéről: „Szerettük volna egy kicsit tágítani a látókörünket. A Hokuspokusban nemcsak maszkos alakok, hanem a mögöttük rendszerint elrejtőző színészek is láthatók a színpa don. A történet a világ teremtésekor kezdődik, ahogy a maszktalan színé szek maszkos alakokat teremtenek, akik belakják a világukat (és elvesznek benne), elkezdik saját életüket élni, egy ponton pedig szemben találják ma gukat teremtőikkel.”

A Familie Flöz produkcióira jellemző módon a Hokuspokus is közös impro vizációk során alakult ki: ilyenkor a társulat tagjai még maszkok nélkül ját szanak és szavakat is váltanak. Ahogy a próbák haladnak előre, a színészek eltűnnek a maszkok mögött, és fokozatosan elmarad a nyelv is. A mostani előadásban a színpad közepén álló doboz testesíti meg a maszkos figurák világát, amely folyamatos átalakulásban, változásban van – a paradicsomtól a család otthonán át egy sor más helyszínt jelképez –, miközben az „alkotók” odakintről mozgatják őket, zenével és énekkel, (kitalált) nyelvvel és zajokkal, élő kamerák és rajzok segítségével mondják el történetüket, és néha maguk is maszkot öltenek, hogy interakcióba lépjenek a benti világgal. „A Hokus pokus története nagyon egyszerű, és a közönség minden tagja számára rengeteg nagyon személyes asszociációt tesz lehetővé – véli Hajo Schüler. – Két ember életútját meséljük el, akik egymásra találnak és családot alapíta nak, mindazokkal a turbulenciákkal, sorscsapásokkal és gyönyörű pillanatok kal, amelyeket egy ilyen élet kínál – egy élet, amely végül, úgy tűnik, véget ér. Így felmerül a kérdés, halandók voltak-e egyáltalán az álarcos figurák?”

Hajo Schüler

Schüler a Familie Flöz művészeti vezetője, társalapítója, több előadás ren dezője, színésze, látványtervezője. A németországi Hammelburgban szü letett, tanulmányait az esseni Folkwang Művészeti Egyetemen végezte. Színészként, koreográfusként és rendezőként több színházban dolgozott, mások mellett a Római Operaház, az esseni Aalto-Theater, a hambur gi Deutsches Schauspielhaus, a bécsi Burgtheater, a Frankfurti Opera, a Buenos Aires-i Centro Cultural Recoleta vagy a kelet-berlini Ballhaus produkcióiban vett részt. Az elmúlt években tanított a berlini Művészeti Egyetemen, a Folkwang Művészeti Egyetemen, a Stuttgarti Állami Zenei

és Előadóművészeti Egyetemen és a müncheni Otto Falckenberg Isko lában, illetve kurzusokat vezetett maszk és színjáték viszonyáról. Bob Dylannel együtt vallja: „Ha valaki maszkot visel, az igazat fogja mondani. Ha nincs rajta maszk, akkor ennek alig van esélye.”

A berlini székhelyű társulat az esseni Folkwang Művészeti Egyetemről indult, mára a maszkos színház újrafelfedezésének egyik legmarkánsabb képviselője. A dinamikusan változó összetételű együttes neve az első elő adás óta állandó; a „flöz” egy bányászati szakkifejezés: olyan talajréteget neveznek így, melyben értékes nyersanyag rejtőzik. Az egyes produkciók alkotói folyamatában fontos szerepet játszik az improvizáció. A Familie Flöz eddig tizenkét egész estés darabot dolgozott ki, valamennyinek sa játos, egyedi hangvétele, karaktere van, ugyanakkor mindegyikben közös az a fajta nyelven felüli, nyelven túli fogalmazásmód, mely – túlzás nélkül állítható – mindenhol érthető.

The beginning of this project was the concept of creation and the many sto ries of the beginning of everything that people tell each other.

This gave rise to the simple question: what would an evening of theatre that begins with the beginning of everything look like? What roles would be distributed? What characters would you want to see there? Do you need a lump of clay? And above all, how would it all end?

But back to the beginning. Darkness becomes light, the divine breath is breathed in, and the first lovers find each other in the garden of paradise. They dare to take their first steps together as a couple, seek shelter from the elements and, thank God, find an affordable apartment. Fate quickly pulls the young couple into the roller coaster of life. With each child, the centrifugal forces grow and threaten to tear the family apart.

Familie Flöz expands its toolbox for this play and, in addition to the familiar masked figures, also shows the actors behind them. Whether playing music, singing, filming, speaking, or making noises, the ensemble creates the world of the masks before the eyes of the audience.

They lend their bodies to the characters and take the fate of the masks into their own hands. Creator and creation meet until the story tells itself. The title Hokuspokus plays with the presumed origin of the word, a popular bastardization of the Latin ‘Hoc est enim corpus meum’ – “This is my body”. Or is it just a conjurer’s trick in the end?

With their latest production, Hokuspokus, premiered in Berlin on 8 June 2022, the ensemble embarks on what is a new adventure stylistically. It tells some thing about the theatre as a box of wonders that we visit to celebrate the play of lies and truth. Director Hajo Schüler, founder and artistic director of the company together with Michael Vogel, said: “We were interested in broaden ing our perspective a bit. In Hokuspokus, what you can see on stage are not only the masked figures but also the actors usually hidden behind them. It starts at the beginning of the world, as these creator like, mask less actors bring masked figures into being: the audience thus experiences how the masked beings are brought to life, find their way in their world (and get lost in it), how they develop a life of their own, and perhaps at some point even come face to face with their creators.“

As is typical in the development process of Familie Flöz productions, Hokus pokus was initially created with improvisations in which the ensemble played without masks and exchanged words. Usually, as rehearsals progress, the ac tors disappear behind the masks and the language is dropped. This time, a box in the centre of the stage representing the living world of the masked figures continuously transforms – from paradise to the family home and various oth er locations – while the “creators” move around them, telling their story through music, manipulation, (fantasy) language, singing and sounds, live cameras and drawings, and even slip into masks themselves to interact with the world from the inside out. “The story of Hokuspokus is a very simple one, allowing for many very personal associations for everyone in the audience,” says Hajo Schüler. “We tell the story of the life journey of two people who find each other and start a family, with all the turbulence, blows of fate and beau tiful moments that such a life has to offer – a life that eventually seems to come to an end. And thus the question arises whether the masked characters were ever even mortal to begin with.”

Hajo Schüler is the artistic director and co founder of Familie Flöz, the direc tor, actor and production designer of several of their plays. He was born in Hammelburg, Germany, and studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. He has worked in several theatres as an actor, choreographer and director, including the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Aalto Theatre of Essen, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Frankfurt Opera, the Centro Cultural Recoleta in Buenos Aires and the Ballhaus in East Berlin. In recent years, he has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts, the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Stuttgart State Univer sity of Music and Performing Arts and the Otto Falckenberg School in Mu nich, and has held courses on the relationship between “mask” and “drama.” He agrees with Bob Dylan that “when somebody’s wearing a mask, he’s gon na tell you the truth. When he’s not wearing a mask, it’s highly unlikely.”

The Berlin based company, which started out at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, is now one of the most prominent exponents of the rediscov ered art of masked theatre. The name of the dynamically changing company has been constant since the first performance: Flöz means “seam,” a stratum of coal or mineral that is economically viable. Improvisation is key in the cre ative process through which each production emerges. Familie Flöz has so far created twelve full length productions, each with its own unique mood and character, but all of them share a mode of expression beyond language which, it is safe to say, can be understood everywhere.
