This is an extra-special Music for Youth Festival and we are delighted to be back in Birmingham for a celebration of young musical talent from across the U.K! There is a lot to celebrate this year: Birmingham is host to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Symphony Hall has been re-developed with a brand-new façade and performance spaces, and, tickets to the National Festival are completely free to take part and to come and watch! This year’s National Festival really is a celebration of the joy of coming together again to perform and experience live music after a two-year absence due to the pandemic. Whether you are a long-standing partner of Music for Youth or a member of the community who has never engaged with the charity before, A Festival for All offers something for everyone. More than anything, it is about showcasing talented young musicians from across the UK.

There is an array of exciting and inspirational musical activities on offer, including a Friday evening Showcase concert, a dedicated ‘takeover’ stage at the CBSO Centre and performances from jazz to rock to rap to samba and everything in between. Alongside the live music, don’t forget to attend one of our workshops and Music Industry Day talks with leading industry experts, including representatives from TikTok and Punch Records. We’re delighted this year that Summaya Mughal and Robyn Richford will be hosting our main stages as well as a line up of expert Music Mentors to provide professional feedback for all of our young performers. There will also be young presenter co-hosts across the two days. So, even if you’re just at the Festival for a day – be sure to wander around the different venues, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the huge range of music and performances on offer!

FRIDAY EVENING ‘SHOWCASE’ CONCERT AT TOWN HALL Showcasing six acts specially selected by Music Mentors and Music for Youth, this gig will bring you an exciting range of upcoming artists and some exciting musical genres from across the UK.

ORCHESTRAL EXPLORERS – FAMILY WORKSHOPS AT THE CBSO CENTRE Come on an adventure and meet all of the instruments in the orchestra in this fun, interactive family workshop. Led by leading professional musicians you will have the chance to sing and dance along as well as try lots of different instruments at the end of the session. HELP US GIVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES ABOUT US Founded in 1970, Music for Youth combines a rich heritage with a simple mission: we believe that every young person should be able to participate in high-quality musical activities, regardless of background or musical style. Our annual programme gives young musicians of all abilities the opportunity to learn and make music together, and to take part in large-scale performance events across the country, for free. As a result, we are proud to work with approximately 60,000 young people each year. As a registered charity, the support of businesses, trusts and foundations, and individuals is vital. We are immensely appreciative of all those who currently support us. However, we still need to raise a significant proportion of our income to ensure we can continue to make a positive impact on young lives.

ORCHESTRAL EXPLORERS

FAMILY WORKSHOPS AT THE CBSO CENTRE Come on an adventure and meet all the instruments in the orchestra in this fun, interactive family workshop. You will be guided through the workshop by one of our professional presenters and musicians and will have the chance to sing and dance along as well as try lots of different instruments at the end of the session. For the first time at our National Festival, we are dedicating the entire CBSO Centre to our ‘Takeover’ stage, showcasing more of the UK’s talented musicians and allowing access to routes throughout the season. Come and join us to see an eclectic mix of music by some of the most talented young performers.

Music For Youth is delighted to deliver a Music Industry Day for 16-25 year olds. Expect workshops and unique opportunities to meet and speak to music industry representatives, including speakers from Punch Records and TIkTok. Booking is essential.

MUSIC MENTORS AT THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL WHAT IS A MUSIC MENTOR? At our Regional Festivals, National Festival and other events and programmes, Music for Youth provides all performers with access to expert advice from professional musicians and music educators: our Music Mentors. Our Music Mentors are the ‘eyes and ears’ of Music for Youth, feeding back on performance standards at every level, making recommendations for progression opportunities within our programme, giving expert advice; and contributing to the development of specific programmes and resources.

Music for Youth’s Music Mentors are a highly valued part of our work and play a vital role as the face of the organisation at events and beyond. We work with people from all backgrounds and musical styles from classical to jazz, and from world through to urban and electronic music. MUSIC MENTORS AT THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL Patrick Bailey Workshop leader, conductor, pianist and trumpeter. Patrick studied conducting at the Royal College of Music and was Learning Manager at BBC Concert Orchestra and then Education & Community Director for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Andy Grappy Freelance tuba player who’s performed with the LSO and Philharmonia. Andy played in the musical Chicago for ten years and has worked with artists such as Tom Jones and Massive Attack. Adey Grummet Singer, lyricist and consultant for numerous school and educational bodies. Adey trained classically at university whilst singing jazz in the uni bar at night. She spent many years in musicals and theatre as well as working as a radio presenter. Damien Harron Musician and co-founder of BackBeat Percussion Quartet. Damien has led the award-winning BackBeat Percussion Quartet on international concert tours to Japan and performed concerts in Merkin Hall and Weill Hall, New York. Joanna Mangona Joanna is the Creative Lead, Composer and Author for Charanga Music, an award-winning online digital music resource for teachers and young people. She was born and raised in Bristol and went on to study Clarinet and Saxophone at the University of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music. As well as teaching, writing and publishing, Joanna has remained active as a performer in a variety of contexts and genres from theatre and orchestral work to big band and African Ensembles. Neil Valentine Violinist Neil studied at York University and Trinity College of Music. has delivered music projects with the LSO, London Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia and RPO. Nikki Yeoh Nikki began playing the piano when she was 3. She hit the road with Courtney Pine and eventually toured Jazz festivals globally both as a soloist and with her band Infinitum. She was voted best jazz musician of the year by the Independent in 1996. Nikki has recently been performing her pieces internationally with Nigel Kennedy, and has also worked with Jools Holland, Nigel Ayers and Sir George Martin to name but a few.

PRESENTERS AND WORKSHOP LEADERS NATIONAL FESTIVAL 2022 PRESENTERS Robyn Richford Robyn is a Scottish Tv/Radio presenter, live host and voiceover artist. She is best known for her work every Saturday and Sunday morning on ITV's SCRAMBLED, her weekend breakfast show on FUN KIDS Radio and BBC RADIO 1 breakfast and early breakfast takeover. She has hosted countless Live events everything from introducing Baroness Karen Brady CBE to over 5,000 people to much more intimate panel discussions.

Shivani Rattan (NYCGB) Shivani is a conductor, singer, music teacher & content creator at the start of an illustrious career. Having already worked with the Choir of Royal Holloway, the National Youth Choirs and the National Children’s Choir, she is paving an incredible path through the choral industry in the UK

Summaya Mughal Summaya is a multi-award winning Senior BBC Radio and TV Presenter/Journalist passionate about music, representation and new talent. Hailing from the Midlands, she currently presents Mid Morning BBC Radio Leicester where she champions new artists through BBC Music Introducing, presents documentaries for BBC One and has even presented the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show.

NATIONAL FESTIVAL 2022 WORKSHOP LEADERS Greg Beardsall (NYCGB) Greg is a leading light in music education and performance. His ability to inspire people of all ages to explore new musical horizons whilst sharing his diverse range of musical skills has created new and exciting music making opportunities, particularly for children and young people. In addition to directing NYCGB Training Choirs, Greg is Conductor of the London Youth Chamber Choir and Music Director of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. He is a guest presenter for BBC Radio 3 and features as a choral music expert for the BBC Proms TV broadcast. He has also held many conducting positions and presented numerous seminars for high profile organisations and music education hubs across England.

Grace Harman

Grace Harman is a 19-year-old trumpeter originally from Suffolk, currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Grace’s long-term aim is to be a professional musician and she dreams of playing in West-End pit bands.

LDEEA

Grace has previously performed with the Suffolk Youth Orchestra in the UK and abroad. She is a regular freelancer, performing in orchestras and bands, as well as conducting and leading ensembles. She has performed at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and is a part of British Youth Music Theatre’s Musician Pool.

An old soul with young energy defines LDEEA; a singer, songwriter, and presenter.

Grace had an 8-week segment on BBC Radio Suffolk documenting life as a music student. She created her own radio show in 2021, named ‘Homeward Harmonies’, on IO Radio.

Taking inspiration from anything that she feels a connection to, LDEEA’s musical influences are quite vast; Jazz, R&B, Indie, and Ambient music being at the top.

Having studied art, the foundations of an LDEEA song are descriptive imagery used to evoke different emotions, what she likes to call ‘sonic storybooks’.

Currently working on her debut EP, she has created a collection of songs that focus on self-love, growth, and development and hopes to shine a light on what has been a very hard time for the world under the current circumstances.

Michael Wood

Michael Wood is a Derbyshire based Professional Actor, Presenter and Live Host Performer who has recently become a Qualified Stage Combat and Performance Capture Artist. His most recent work has been facilitating workshops on the Bring The Power Programme in the build-up to the Commonwealth games. As well as touring the country in various Theatre in Education projects.

Jackson has been presenting and hosting since secondary school, including hosting the Music for Youth Southampton Regional Festival. He is studying performance and aspires to be a professional performer/ presenter so this is his first professional presenter role.
