“Not only was it a valuable experience for our students to perform in front of a different audience, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to travel to another part of the country and share their work. The whole experience was a massive boost for their confidence and aspirations.” Group Leader 2023

“In case you missed the big news, Music for Youth is now based in Birmingham - although we continue to work across the UK! We are so grateful for all the support we have received from the community here in Birmingham and especially grateful to everyone at our wonderful new home at CBSO Centre.” John Dixon, Chair

There’s an enchanting quality to working in an office where the sounds of a live, world-class orchestra fill the air all day long. I must admit, I’ve found myself completely absorbed in the melodies of clarinets and flutes drifting through the walls during many a meeting, often losing track of the conversation. As a former sound engineer, I deeply understand the importance of listening. My training instilled in me the skill of discerning individual sounds, chords, notes, voices, and effects. The Music for Youth National Festival stands as a remarkable and electrifying event, drawing together thousands of exceptionally talented young musicians from across the nation, all bound by their shared love for live music. Throughout the festival, an eclectic mix

Our annual programme gives young musicians of all abilities the opportunity to learn, make music together and participate in large-scale performance events across the country, for free. We are proud to work with over 30,000 young people each year.

Our vision is to ensure that every young person in the UK can achieve their musical potential by performing the music they love. Young people make great music and we are fiercely proud that our programme is open to all young musicians: no borders, no boundaries, no barriers.

Composition workshop exploring ’sounds of nature’

The Citizens’ Assembly brings together young people across the UK to deliberate on issues and recommend solutions that shape the future of music policy. The assembly is a democratic approach to solve problems and empower young people, whether they want to develop their skills to build a career in music or experience it as a source of joy.

with Katie Chatburn

Young people from the music hubs Wolverhampton and Lancashire have co-curated this assembly in partnership with Music for Youth, Music Mark and Sound Connections, who are hosting the event at B:Music Birmingham.

Anyone between the ages of 16-25 can sign up for free. If you are a young person that cares about music education and are thinking about a career in the music industry, have your say in shaping the future of the industry and join us at our open forum, facilitated by a panel of leading music industry experts. Facilitated by: Liz Coomb, Sound Connections Duration: 4 hours Date: 10am, Friday 5 July 2024 Location: Justham Howe Room, Symphony Hall Suitability: Anyone aged between 16-25

Working with composer Katie Chatburn, you are invited to take part in a mixed ensemble that explores the group creation of an experimental soundscape inspired by nature.

Bold and inclusive, this workshop will aim to represent the voices of all present and go beyond written prompts in order to engage participants more fully in collective sound and imaginative music making.

Taking themes of climate change, we will engage in Pauline Olivero’s inspired Deep Listening exercises and investigate extended sonorities from the ensemble to create a group composition.
