WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL 2O23! Welcome to the only music festival where everyone really is a headliner! The wonderful thing about music festivals is that you never know what brilliant musical discoveries you are going to make. At the Music for Youth National Festival you will see all kinds of wonderful young performers in every instrumental combination, from brass bands and percussion ensembles to choirs, orchestras and artists performing their own original songs.

Whether you are a long-standing partner of Music for Youth, or a member of the community who has never engaged with the charity before, MFY’s National Festival ‘Where Everyone’s A Headliner’ has something for everyone. There’s nowhere better than Birmingham to stage a National Music Festival for young artists. The city has wonderful venues and such a rich musical heritage, from the world famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to UB40 and recent artists like Laura Mvula and saxophonist Xhosa Cole. At Music for Youth, we believe every young performer is a headliner. All the young artists performing have been chosen to play at the festival because they are equally brilliant. The passion, effort and musicianship on show over the next two days is of the highest quality.

Our mission is to ensure that every young person in the UK can achieve their musical potential by performing the music they love. We believe that music, and the chance to participate in high quality musical activities, should be open to every young person. Our annual programme gives young musicians of all abilities the opportunity to learn and make music together, and to take part in large-scale performance events across the country, for free. CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY

HAVE YOUR SAY IN INFLUENCING THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY! We are delighted to be holding a Young People’s Citizens’ Assembly for Music at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.

This is a pilot event, co-curated by young people from Lancashire and Tri-Borough music hubs, in collaboration with Music for Youth.

This is an opportunity for young people aged 16–25 from around the UK to come together to shape their future in music. Participants will have the opportunity to question key figures, network, gain knowledge about the music industry and discuss the state of music policy. Topics will include: quality and diversification of music education, access for SEND, rural and low-income families, industry career opportunities, and access to information. The day will conclude with a manifesto from young people, which will include a series of recommendations presented to government and policy makers.

NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIR AT THE MUSIC FOR YOUTH NATIONAL FESTIVAL WHO WE ARE National Youth Choir is a nationwide community and champion for youth singing, standing for artistic excellence, creative diversity, and openness and relevance to all. We champion the power of singing, opening up opportunities so that more young people from all walks of life can find and use their voice. Each year we engage thousands of young people and emerging artists through our creative and learning programmes – providing pathways for young people at all stages of musical development. From our four national choirs which offer courses to over 900 members from all over the UK, with performances reaching millions of live, on-air and online audiences, to our Learning and Engagement activity in partnership with local organisations in targeted areas across the UK reaching over 3,500 young people in state schools every year; everything we do is to help young people develop the confidence and skills to realise their greatest potential. We are also focused on shaping the workforce of the future through our Emerging Professional Artists Programme, which annually supports and launches the careers of eight artists from diverse backgrounds each year. You’ll meet a few of these young artists at our workshops!

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO US ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH MFY We’ve been collaborating with Music for Youth for quite some time now and the thing you can’t match is the atmosphere of celebration at the National Festival! Everyone has travelled to perform with their group and it’s a delight to meet all these different ensembles from across the country. We love the variety of different groups performing and the fact that they have all worked so hard at perfecting their performances for the stages in Birmingham. The ethos of Music for Youth matches so well to our own as a fellow National Youth Music Organisation (known to funders as a NYMO). For National Youth Choir, equality and diversity are the foundation of our creative excellence; in performance, in our choirs and in a workshop setting. Young people must be given the space, tools and support to shape their own creative journeys, and to have the access to routes to develop their talent and skills alongside music professionals. This is something we value really highly in Music for Youth’s activities. As well as this, we also love working with Music for Youth because they bring this wonderful sense of joy in providing the stages on which so many talented young musicians can perform!

WHAT ARE WE DOING AT THE MFY NATIONAL FESTIVAL THIS YEAR? We’re delighted to return to the Music for Youth National Festival in 2023 to lead two afternoon workshops with anyone who loves to sing! On Saturday 8 July our workshop team will be led by the wonderful Greg Link (Apollo5, National Youth Choir and National Youth Music Theatre), and together with our young leaders and current members of National Youth Choir 19-25, Greg will get everyone singing, dancing and generally having fun with their voices. You can expect a session full of catchy songs and warm-ups from a wide range of styles, plenty of energy and enthusiasm and a friendly welcome by the National Youth Choir team. Everything will be taught by ear and we want to make our workshops accessible and inclusive for all. We’re really looking forward to hearing everyone’s voices and harmonies!

Our programmes are cross-genre, supporting bold multi-disciplinary ideas from young people throughout the UK. Whether you’re an emerging creative or established artist – whatever your vibe, whatever your story. There’s a place for you. Everyone’s got their own frequency, we’ll help you find yours. CREATIVE CAREERS Creative Careers supports 100 young people (per year) to gain paid work experience, skills training, and mentoring opportunities with industry professionals. Roles available include presenting, stage tech/crew assistant, marketing and social media, BSL Interpreter, and event production roles 4+ hours of mentoring by an Industry Professional, including professional TV and radio presenters Professional training from expert stage crew, presenters, photographers and MFY in-house staff Work at iconic music venues across the UK including the Royal Albert Hall in London and Symphony Hall, Town Hall and CBSO Centre in Birmingham

NEW MUSIC RESIDENCY The New Music Residency brings together artists and composers to collaborate with orchestras, choirs, DJs, wind, brass and string ensembles to upscale their music for a performance at the Royal Albert Hall at the Music for Youth Proms. PRESENTERS

PROFESSIONAL PRESENTERS Jack Pepper Jack is one of the UK’s youngest commissioned composers. He has written music for the Royal Opera House, the Royal Philharmonic Society and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Jack has recorded his work with acclaimed conductors including Sir Antonio Pappano, Vasily Petrenko and Kirill Karabits; his music has been broadcast on Classic FM and the BBC. As a performer, he appeared as a vocalist at Wembley Arena, has performed on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, Soho Theatre and the Roundhouse. He is also a presenter on Scala Radio, the UK’s newest national classical radio station, and regularly writes for Musicals Magazine. Pete Letanka Pete studied Jazz and Contemporary music at Leeds College of Music, where he won a scholarship to spend a year studying with Mark Polishook at the University of Maine in the USA. He graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) and the Leeds University Armes award for the highest mark in his graduating year. On graduation, he formed the Pete Letanka Trio and was signed to the award-winning label Zephyr Records, who released his debut album, ‘Afrostocracy’ to critical acclaim. Nikki Yeoh Recognized as one of the most ground-breaking contemporary jazz composers and pianists of her generation, Nikki has worked with the likes of Courtney Pine, Billy Cobham, Sir George Martin, Nigel Kennedy, The Roots and Neneh Cherry. As a teacher and educator, Nikki teaches piano at The Camden School for Girls and Portland Place School, runs jazz ensembles for Camden Music and is proud to be a mentor for Music for Youth. She was also the Musical Director for the finalists of the BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020.

YOUNG PRESENTERS Lewis Greaves Lewis has a deep passion for music and believes music is one of the most important aspects in life. He played Joe Casey in the school’s production of Our House and ensemble in Chicago and Hairspray. He was requested to sign a moving rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine for the school’s remembrance video. He is a bass player outside of school and is also learning to play the drums. Aliyah Nelson Aliyah is an oboist, but recently began playing the cor anglais in her youth orchestra at the Wandsworth Music Academy. In November 2020 she was one of the first members of the academy’s youth voice team. Aliyah is also a self-taught dancer and finds that music is a language which always conveys how she feels. Grace Harman Grace Harman is a 20-year-old trumpeter originally from Suffolk, currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. She is a regular freelancer, performing in orchestras, pit bands, brass bands, and big bands, as well as conducting and leading ensembles. Grace also has her own radio show, named ‘Homeward Harmonies’, on IO Radio. Linda-Ray Ndlovu Linda is about to graduate from a BA Acting course at Leeds Conservatoire, where she focused on acting and voice work including presenting and aspects to managing yourself. She has attended a variety of gigs and performances, as well as launching her own music career, collaborating with other music students. Cendal Morrison Cendal studied media in high school and college, and currently has her own radio show.

FREQUENCIES CREATIVE CAREERS Frequencies Creative Careers provides paid work experience to young people aged 16–25. It supports the next generation of industry professionals to gain experience with the support of a mentor who provides expert advice and guidance during their position. YOUNG PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS Ashleigh Froud Ashleigh is currently in her first year at Leeds Conservatoire studying Music Business, but she has previous experience as a data collector, working in a box office and helping bands secure gigs. She has also written and recorded original music. Leo Schartz Leo has volunteered at a music studio and helped run events through his university course. He is in his second year at Middlesex University, studying Music Business and Arts Management. Melanie Lopez Melanie is studying Music Business and Arts Management at Middlesex University and has previous experience developing events celebrating Women’s International Day where her role was Event Manager and Promoter.

YOUNG PRODUCTION CO-ORDINATORS Ethan McInerney Ethan is a trumpeter and composer working in London. He attended NMPAT when he was younger and performed at MFY events in Birmingham and the Royal Albert Hall! Outside of music Ethan loves to watch the F1 and to go travelling. Luke Duncan Luke is a composer, and also performs in amateur orchestras. He has been a part of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s ‘Young Ambassadors’ program, and has worked with an American trad orchestra touring Scotland. Rohan Harron Rohan is a Dublin-based violinist and composer. He has performed in prestigious venues and in numerous masterclasses as a soloist with Katherine Hunka, Jack Liebeck and other renowned players. Tess Elkington Tess is a Drama, Theatre and Performance student at the University of Sussex. She loves working behind the scenes on shows and projects, and she is the head coach at her university’s competitive cheerleading society.

Vincent Okih Vincent has recently graduated with a degree in performing arts. He is a freelance Production Manager, focusing on independent film productions and music video sets. Xiomara Andrade Sumbana Xiomara is studying a Music A-level and has applied for a Music and English Literature combined degree at university. Xiomara has previous experience recording and mixing music for an up-and-coming artist in her local area.

YOUNG STAGE ASSISTANTS Julia Szulc Julia is currently finishing her degree in Music Production and would like to pursue live sound in the future. She started shadowing the production team at concerts, which included Suede at O2 Academy in Leeds. Semra Akkaya Semra studied Music Production at The Academy of Contemporary Music for three years and is currently doing a Film Music degree at the Leeds Conservatoire. YOUNG SOCIAL MEDIA & MARKETING ASSISTANTS Ola Dalek Ola is a Media and Communications graduate, who is currently working as a merchandise seller. Her career goal is to be a Creative Director within the music industry.

Eleanor Reynolds Eleanor is about to graduate from Leeds Conservatoire with a degree in Popular Music on the Vocal Pathway. She has experience managing multiple social media accounts, creating content calendars, and analysing metrics to ensure maximum engagement and reach. Kay Savage Kay is studying Songwriting at Leeds Conservatoire and is in their final year. Kay’s experience includes promoting LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent artists/musicians and participating in a community journalism course with West Leeds Dispatch. Yasmin D’Monte Yasmin studied Film and Media Production at The BRIT School, shortly followed by a Diploma in Creative Media Production and is now studying Film and Television Production at The University of Bristol.

FREQUENCIES NEW MUSIC RESIDENCY

YOSHIZAWA Jazz band

This is the first year of the Frequencies New Music Residency. Seven music creators across the UK have been selected to collaborate on a musical project to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. All participants come from a range of musical backgrounds such as Jazz, Classical, Folk, Hip Hop, Drum and Bass and other disciplines. Each of them will receive £1,000, mentoring from expert music mentors, support from our network of orchestras, big bands and choirs and a performance at the Royal Albert Hall. With the support of our sponsorship from Vivendi Create Joy Fund, we are excited to bring this first iteration of the Residency to be performed at the Music for Youth Prom on the 15th November 2023.

MUSIC MENTORS

WHAT IS A MUSIC MENTOR? Music for Youth provides all performers with access to expert advice from professional musicians and music educators: our Music Mentors. Our Music Mentors are the ‘eyes and ears’ of Music for Youth, feeding back on performance standards at every level, making recommendations for progression opportunities within our programme, giving expert advice; and contributing to the development of specific programmes and resources. Music for Youth’s Music Mentors are a highly valued part of our work and play a vital role as the face of the organisation at events and beyond. We work with people from all backgrounds and musical styles from classical to jazz, and from world through to urban and electronic music. You can find out more about their roles here: mfy.org.uk/get-involved/music-mentors MUSIC MENTORS AND LEADERS AT THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL Adey Grummet Adey is a soprano who attempts to defy classification. She is also a lyricist, animateur, writer, vocal consultant, conductor, historian and gardener. She has created numerous roles in contemporary operas for major British composers and was a founding member of The Shout. She has worked for most of the leading opera companies in the UK and appeared as a concert soloist and recitalist in most major British venues.

Alison Walker Alison studied recorder and cello at Royal Holloway, University of London and continued with postgraduate studies at Vienna Conservatoire and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Alison has a passion for music education and inclusive music making, delivering music workshops and musical collaborations for organisations. Alison enjoys a varied and stimulating performing career, as a soloist on recorder and in orchestras, chamber ensembles, theatre pit bands and pop groups as a cellist. Andy Grappy Andy has worked as a freelance tuba player since 1985 and has performed with most of the major London Orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonia, BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras, and has played on many film and TV scores. Andy also played in the musical Chicago for ten years. Damien Harron Damien Harron is a co-founder of BackBeat Percussion Quartet with which he has received numerous awards and has also appeared with many of the UK’s leading orchestras and ensembles. As a soloist he has gained a reputation as an adventurous performer of new music with a special interest in the commissioning and performance of theatrical works. Damien is currently the curriculum leader for classical music and new music at Leeds College of Music. Joanna Mangona Joanna is the Creative Lead, Composer and Author for Charanga Music, an award-winning online digital music resource for teachers and young people. She studied clarinet and saxophone at the University of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music. Following this, Joanna lived and worked in South Africa and studied Ethnomusicology at the University of Natal, with Darius Brubeck and Carol Muller.

John Evans John is a professional session guitarist, composer, songwriter and arranger who has played for Ray Davies, Chris Difford, Liam Bailey, Marti Pellow and The Divine Comedy. John has appeared on soundtracks for the BBC and Channel 4 and has arranged music for various ensembles. John is a writer/ performer for Roxbury Music and has played various West End shows including Billy Elliot and Jersey Boys. John also teaches Music at Sussex Downs College. Katie Chatburn Katie Chatburn trained at the Royal Academy of Music followed by an MMus at the Royal Northern College of Music. She works as a professional composer, arranger/ orchestrator and cellist. Katie formed Ignition Orchestra in 2017 and the orchestra has performed to sell out audiences at venues including the Barbican and Eventim Apollo. Katie is currently developing a popular music curriculum for ABRSM. Bridget Walsh Originally from Aotearoa, Bridget has been touring with UK bands since 2013, with a résumé that includes Glastonbury, Boomtown, Sono Centrum, Shambala, Latitude, Estragon Club, Subsonic, Auckland Arts Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe. A vocalist, composer and keys player, Bridget is band leader and frontwoman of London future-soul collective 10:32, with Lyle Barton and Radovan Brtko. Neil Valentine Neil began his musical life as a violinist, but at 14 switched to the viola, never to look back. He studied at York University and Trinity College of Music. Neil has delivered music projects and workshops with orchestras across the UK. He is the founder and musical director of Music4EveryoneUK and a learning and participation associate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Naveen Arles Naveen Arles has established himself as an energetic and inspirational vocal leader and animateur. Immersed in music for almost 35 years, 25 years of which, he has been creating and running singing groups of all ages and abilities. Nav currently directs various groups, including the leading youth choir in Newham, NewYVC and Grand Union Voices. Nav works with Liberty Choirs in prisons and has just taken up the role as Vocal Lead for Brent Music Service. For several years, he was Artistic Director of the London International Gospel Choir (LIGC) and is proud to be a vocal leader for London Youth Choirs. Patrick Bailey Workshop leader, conductor, pianist and trumpeter, Patrick studied conducting at the Royal College of Music and has worked with many professional orchestras across the UK. He has led education and outreach work for both the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and is now an associate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, leading work in schools and communities across the south west. Tom Chapman Tom is hailed as one of the most innovative percussionists in the UK. Whilst studying for a jazz degree, which he received with first class honours, Tom integrated the Cajon into the hybrid drum kit and hand percussion set up that has become his trademark. He is a founding member of The Urban Folk Quartet. Tom is also an in-demand swing drummer.
