I can’t tell you how excited I am to be back in the Royal Albert Hall tonight, two years after we were last here... We come together as different people. The world has changed. We are all only too aware of the devastating impact of the pandemic on live music making and on music education in particular over the last 18 months. I salute the herculean efforts music teachers and leaders have made to keep young musicians engaged and motivated through such difficult times, and to make that extra effort for those who face the additional challenges lockdown exposed. During this period, Music for Youth has pulled out all the stops to keep sharing and celebrating the achievements of young people in music at every level. The medium changed, but the aim was the same and we were proud to present three online festivals, including video walls with a diverse range of footage showing communities making music together – all ages, all abilities, in bedrooms, up mountains, on skateboards – all over the place!

Tonight’s concert embodies that same spirit of coming together for the joy of making music, live with others. Nearly 2,000 young people will be performing from within the auditorium as part of our national creative project – ‘All the Hall’s a Stage’. Primary age, secondary, instrumentalists, vocalists, beginners and experienced musicians – they are all here. We wanted to reflect the fact that music has been happening everywhere, all around us, and the most unlikely of settings have become global stages for absolutely anyone whether their family has turned into a kitchen percussion ensemble or whether they are a global superstar. Through this open project, the 2021 Prom is our most inclusive yet and it forms the artistic framework for the whole concert. I am very pleased to welcome you to this concert and hope that you, like me, will warmly support the large number of young people making music together in this highly emotive physical and psychological space. MUSIC FOR YOUTH OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS The long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic is unprecedented. Live music events have been decimated, and the negative impact on the mental health and wellbeing of young people is undisputed. Music for Youth’s role in providing national music events which offer a sense of hope, community and peer support has never been more important. Over the last 18 months, in the absence of live events, we, like others, explored new digital opportunities. This is some of what we did... ELEVATE – JULY 2020 MFY’s first digital festival in place of our annual National Festival. Composer, presenter and MFY Ambassador Jack Pepper and presenter of tonight’s Prom, Remel London, presented three specially curated online showcases ‘Live at 5’ which premiered on YouTube across the 5 day festival. You can still catch them on our YouTube channel. ’Illuminate’ was a space for emerging artists to promote their music and raise their profile across our network and ‘Your Music, Your Voice’ was a series of youth-led focus groups discussing issues of relevance during lockdown.
THE FUTURE IS NOW (TFIN) – DECEMBER 2020 An online programme of live and pre-recorded events for primary age, secondary age and emerging young artists. THE REMIX 2021 NATIONAL FESTIVAL – JULY 2021 Having taken on the theme of ‘REMIX’ for 2021, we planned a new hybrid national festival, combining a covidsecure live event in Symphony Hall, Birmingham with an online offering. Sadly, at the last minute, Birmingham had extra covid restrictions so the live event was cancelled. But... we beefed up our digital content and carried on! Features of our second fully digital festival were a Sector Spotlight with participatory content from partners such as Positive Youth Foundation and Music Education Hubs; a series of tutor videos from Music Mentors, our resident pool of artists; free online workshops, an online performance stage and daily playlists, a video wall and digital reporting roles for young people.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE 2020 was Music for Youth’s 50th birthday year, and whilst it didn’t exactly go as planned... we had always intended to use it as an opportunity to do new things. Well, with the help of the pandemic, we certainly managed that! You can read more about our pivot to online events during lockdown on page 02. Tonight’s Prom is a great example of how we plan to work in the future. The live performance is just part of our offer to young people, and they can get involved in many different ways, according to their interests.
As well as the live event tonight, we have: digital channel with content • Agenerated largely by young people in paid roles (see page 07). As we start to move out of covid, Music for Youth’s role in championing music education and providing exciting opportunities on a national basis for young people to come together has never been more important.

TONIGHT’S PRESENTERS As part of our commitment to having young people at the centre of the Prom this year, Remel London has mentored three young people who will co-present the Prom with her. Through a series of workshops they have developed their presenting skills, created scripts and helped to shape the presentation of the Prom. Thanks to Wakefield Music Education Hub, Wandsworth Music Service and Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust for their nominations.
REMEL LONDON Remel London is a bubbly, energetic and fun award-winning British TV and Radio presenter and host. Since graduating with a BA degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds, Remel is making waves in the industry as the lead presenter on SKY One’s What’s Up TV, the host of the Saturday afternoon show on CAPITAL XTRA and a highly sought after voice-over artist working with the BBC, CBBC, BET, UKTV and BT Sports to name a few. Remel’s early career started with the online music platform Link Up TV as the lead presenter and the weekly host of London’s top live music event ILUVLIVE. Her extensive knowledge of music and entertainment meant she was invited to
join the MOBO Awards panel in 2013– 2015 and went on to present the MOBO’s official Red Carpet in 2016 and 2017. A confident and experienced host, Remel has hosted numerous events including the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall for two consecutive years, The Rocking Ur Teens Girls Conference for the last 5 years and the first Virtual Notting Hill Carnival Main Stage in 2020. Remel London is very passionate about her local community and young creatives. She is the founder of The Mainstream, which is a creative platform offering networking opportunities, live events, workshops, seminars, Q&A’s and a podcast to support individuals that would like to launch and develop their career into the mainstream media and entertainment world.
PHOEBE JARVIS LEWIS GREAVES Lewis Greaves (15) is the Head Boy of his school. He has a deep passion for music and believes music is one of the most important aspects in life. Lewis played Joe Casey in the school’s production of Our House and ensemble in Chicago and Hairspray. He was requested to sign a moving rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine for the school’s remembrance video. He is a bass player outside of school and is currently learning to play the drums. He loves the sense of community that music brings and values the opportunity to present at the Music for Youth Prom.

ALIYAH NELSON Aliyah is a 19-year-old oboist with the desire to change the norms of oboe playing. She is currently applying to conservatoires in hopes of making that happen. As well as playing the oboe, she recently began playing the cor anglais in her youth orchestra at the Wandsworth Music Academy. In November 2020 she took up a founding role by becoming one of the first members of the academy’s youth voice team. She is a self-taught dancer who feels musicality is her friend. The same technique occurs when playing the oboe; she feels that music is a language which always conveys how she feels.
Pheobe (17) has been in love with performing for as long as she can remember, which fuelled her desire to start learning the clarinet. She joined Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust and played with them for seven years. Within these seven years, her love for performance developed and grew, pushing her towards acting. She now studies Actor Musicianship at Guildford School of Acting and can’t wait to see where this life of performance takes her!

At the Prom this year, we have four Young Reporters aged 19–21 working on our social media channels, conducting written and filmed interviews and creating content for our website, including our REMIX podcast. We also worked with Young Reporters at our Digital National Festival in uly. The content they produced was especially well-received on our social channels, proving invaluable in supporting our communication with young people.

Welcome back! After the toughest period in our 150-year history, we’re delighted to open our doors again, and play host to very special events like this one. The Hall is a registered charity committed to providing unforgettable, life-enhancing experiences for everyone. Though the last 16 months have been di�cult for us all, we are so excited to be getting back to what we do best. Welcoming other charities to our spectacular building has been part of our commitment to the public good since the Hall opened in 1871 and it is a privilege to be able to continue to support other causes in this way. AFTERGLOW A NATIONAL REMIX PROJECT Music for Youth has commissioned Lewisham Music to lead and develop a post-Prom technology-based music project which expands the scope of the MFY Prom beyond the live event, builds on all our digital work over the past 18 months and appeals to young musicians working in contemporary genres.
Lewisham Music will lead the project locally and work with Music for Youth to extend its reach to young people in line with Music for Youth’s national brief. Taking the Prom as a starting point, this project will provide an opportunity for young producers and lyricists to work creatively with stems from the live Prom event, supplied by Music for Youth. With tutoring and mentoring built into the project, young people will be supported to develop remixed tracks for further sharing at future Music for Youth events, live or online.
This is an exciting new commissioning model and through feedback and evaluation of the project, including with young people, MFY hope to further explore the potential of future collaborative work and partnerships of this nature.

ALL THE HALL’S A STAGE: A NATIONAL CREATIVE PROJECT TIM STEINER
THIS PROJECT IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL EDUCATION UNION AND MUSICIANS’ UNION
All the Hall’s a Stage this evening as 2,000 young people join together in a bumper creative project led by composer Tim Steiner. This is our most inclusive Prom yet. We invited groups of young musicians of any instrumentation or vocal range, and of any ability between the ages of 4–21 to sign up and we’re delighted to welcome groups from across the country to the Royal Albert Hall today – youth orchestras, school choirs, jazz bands, budding young ukulele players and even a digital percussion ensemble coming together for the first time in person. This afternoon saw our first in-person rehearsal, although everyone has been busy preparing resources for the project sent in advance and teachers and group leaders joined Tim and the MFY team for online workshops to help them prepare. Thank you to the anchor groups: Musica Youth Jazz, Northamptonshire County Youth Orchestra, Cornwall County Youth Choir & Vocalize.
“All the Hall’s a Stage is a response to, and in part, a celebration of the last 18 months. The internet became the stage, the rehearsal venue, the green room, and the place to hangout. Everyone became a performer, whether they liked it or not. With All the Hall’s a Stage, we’re trying to bring some of that essence into the MFY Prom. Everyone is a performer, everyone takes part, everyone has something to add, everyone is a listener, everyone has a part to play.

TIM STEINER CREATIVE PROJECT LEADER Tim is a composer, performer, educator and presenter with an international reputation built over the past 25 years. He has a specialty in collaboration and devised work and has directed hundreds of creative projects in partnership with orchestras, concert halls, conservatoires, schools, music colleges and arts centres throughout the world. He has directed major projects for the European Capitals of Culture in Guimaraes (Portugal) 2012, and Valletta (Malta) 2018. He has worked extensively with cities and municipalities creating large-scale multi-faceted performances bringing together professionals, amateurs and beginners from all backgrounds. He has a long running relationship with the Casa da Musica in Porto and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the UK.
He has worked extensively throughout the UK, and has directed work with cultural organisations in France, Germany, Norway, Finland, Austria, Bulgaria, Malta, Ireland, Kuwait, Brazil, USA, Azerbaijan, China, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium. He has directed many live events at the BBC, working closely across all the orchestras and BBC singers together with BBC learning. These events included tours to support the TV shows I’d Do Anything, How do You Solve a Problem like Maria?, and Play It Again. From 2010 until 2018 he was the conductor of Stopestra, a group of 100 rock musicians in Porto. Tim was a tutor in Music Studies, Composition, Improvisation and Workshop Leading at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama from 1993–2018. He completed his PhD, entitled ‘Composition: Interaction and Collaboration’ in 1992 at City University.

PERFORMERS MUSICA YOUTH JAZZ Musica Youth Jazz was formed due to demand in Kirklees for a high-level big band as a pathway from the big bands at our 5 music centres. The group rehearse every week during term time and play a wide range of repertoire. Musica Youth Jazz is a very sociable group made up of like-minded musicians. The band engages in many concerts, festivals and events throughout the year and are especially proud of their involvement in the MFY Proms a few years ago. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA The Northamptonshire County Youth Orchestra is one of over 30 ensembles that rehearse weekly at the Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust. Players audition annually for a place in the orchestra, and typically perform five or six concerts a year, with music this year including works by Sibelius, Elgar, Coleridge-Taylor, Bizet, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Nielsen amongst others. In July 2022 the orchestra will be undertaking a concert tour to Magdeburg in Germany, performing in Dessau, Magdeburg, Bad Schmiedeberg and Brandenburg.
CORNWALL COUNTY YOUTH CHOIR The Cornwall County Choirs consist of singers aged 3–18 from around Cornwall. The choirs are part-funded by the Cornwall Music Education Hub.

Several different choirs make up our choir family from the youngest Mini-Singers through to Youth choir, all rehearsing with our experienced choir staff team. The choirs perform across Cornwall and have acquired a large online following since lockdown 2020. They have participated in previous Music for Youth National Festivals as well as BBC Proms Gala concerts.

VOCALIZE Vocalize are a school choir from Sedgehill Academy based in Lewisham South East London. The choir were formed in 2010 and have been an integral part of the schools musical life ever since performing at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Albert Hall and many top UK venues. The students range from 11–17 years old from a wide mix of backgrounds and have regular studio sessions during school helping them develop their recording and songwriting skills. Being in Vocalize helps students with their confidence and them engage in the academic side of school life. Pupils also regularly organise showcases and upload songs onto platforms such as Soundcloud, where so far they have totalled over 200k plays (and 300 original songs written). Some ex-Vocalize members have continued with music after leaving school, working in the music industry as professionals, signing record and publishing deals with most notably Amy Kabba being Grammy nominated for her number 1 duet with MNEK ’Need you 100%’. Also past band members of Vocalize are now session musicians playing with artists such as Stormzy, Emelie Sandé and Mabel. Moses Boyd, another ex-Sedgehill student, is now one of the most talked about jazz drummers in the world and recently featured on Later with Jools Holland as the main guest.
Shia first picked up the clarinet when he was given an instrument by a local parishioner in November 2018, he now attends Chetham’s School of Music and plays on a clarinet kindly awarded to him by Awards for Young Musicians. Shia became very ill aged five and spent weeks in hospital; he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes but has amazed everyone and proved that nothing is unachievable. YOUTHSAYERS Youthsayers is a South London based music performance and education group, who produce high quality music performance and recordings, as well as unique and inspiring educational opportunities for young people. Youthsayers strives to provide opportunity and a developmental path for all young people with an interest in ensemble playing and is run by musicians from prolific and legendary South London band Soothsayers. RUBIK’S CUBE Rubik’s Cube are a pop/rock choir that sing and use Makaton sign language while performing. The choir formed at Osborne School in Winchester over 11 years ago and the group includes over 30 young people with a range of special educational needs. The choir choose their own songs and love the thrill of performance. The performers support each other and this was no more apparent than during the Covid-19 lockdown where the band continued to meet every Monday for rehearsals and performances online. Other achievements by the band include playing as the Olympic torch arrived into Winchester (2012), supporting local charities and playing a show with Peter Andre! SHIA & JL Mother and son duo, Shia and JL submitted their joyful and moving video of klezmer music to Music for Youth’s National Festival video wall in July 2021 and have subsequently been invited to perform at the MFY Prom. Shia, aged 10, and his three older sisters all play music and were all taught by their mother, JL. The family have an Irish musical background and Shia also loves to Irish Dance.

together. In total, we received 184 video submissions to the new video wall, totaling over 6,398 participants, from locations across the UK including Wales, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, and Yorkshire.
The Video Wall was an integral component to the festival, spotlighting talent and creativity from young musicians the UK over. An open call for submissions was launched in April 2021, and young musicians were encouraged to submit creative interpretations and responses to the theme ‘Remix’, to reflect the times and impact of substantial change on young people and their music-making, and celebrate the way young people have adapted, innovated, reimagined, reconfigured, and rearranged how they make music
Brent Music Service North and South Junior Choirs submitted the video There Will Always Be A Reason To Sing. The choirs are made up of children from years 3, 4 and 5 who perform regularly throughout the academic year and consist of children selected from schools across the London Borough of Brent. This video really touched us all at MFY and we felt that having it arranged for the Prom finale was a fitting way to reflect the amazing work that teachers and group leaders have done to keep their ensembles alive during the pandemic.
