We are delighted to welcome you to the 2022 Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
Over the next two nights, over 3,000 young musicians will be playing, singing, and dancing across a range of musical genres. There will be solos, duos, ensembles, orchestras, and choirs. There will be improvising, creativity, covers, new commissions, original songs, and great virtuosity.
The MFY Proms at the Royal Albert Hall is a tradition that stretches back to 1975. It is a tradition that is based on a very simple truth; young people make great music, and this should be celebrated on the most fantastic stages.
For many young musicians, it’s been a ‘comeback’ year – a return to regular rehearsals or band practice, and a time of regaining some of the musical ground that was lost during successive lockdowns. The Proms provide a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the passion and talent of the young musicians taking part, but also the effort and dedication of parents, carers and teachers who have gone to extraordinary lengths to support these young people over the past 12 months.
Many have travelled a long way to get here, none more so than our special guest musicians from Ukraine who are safely continuing their studies at the London Performing Academy of Music. We welcome you with open arms.
Music for Youth is a charity that believes strongly in young people as musicians, composers, songwriters, and producers. Many of our favourite musicians were performing at the highest level or composed their best work while still in their teens. Stevie Wonder had his first hit at 13 years old, Kate Bush topped the UK singles chart at 19 and Sheku Kanneh-Mason MBE began winning numerous awards and accolades at the age of just 17. Indeed, MFY alumnus and ambassador Jack Pepper is one of the UK’s youngest composers and at just 19 became a presenter on Scala Radio.
It is simple: young people make great music and Music for Youth’s role is to advocate for young musicians and support them on their journey through concerts and festivals at major venues, and opportunities to produce music and learn about the industry not just on stage but also in non-performance roles backstage.
So, finally, let’s take a moment to acknowledge, and show our appreciation to the fantastic teamwork that goes into staging our events and the technical team who work tirelessly backstage to enable the magic to happen on stage.

YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE GREAT MUSIC: SUPPORT THE NEXT
GENERATION
Music for Youth is launching a new campaign to highlight the brilliance of young musicians across the UK. We are asking everyone with an interest in music to get behind this campaign and to go out and see young musicians play live and support the next generation of musicians.
Young people make phenomenal music and many of the most talented musicians in the world started at a young age. Stevie Wonder, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, The Kanneh-Masons, and Kate Bush’s careers took when they were young. As did MFY Alumni Nigel Kennedy and Dame Evelyn Glennie who both performed at the Proms in 1982 and 1986.
Many of our national youth ensembles including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, and the disabled-led National Open Youth Orchestra are producing the stars of tomorrow. The legacy of events like BBC Young Musician of the Year and the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall are just two examples of life-changing launch pads to a career for young musicians.
Our campaign intersects with several recognised challenges for the music industry. Firstly, grassroots music venues are under threat of closure. Small venues have traditionally provided a circuit for young, early career musicians. When small venues close, it limits the number of stages young musicians have to develop their craft.
Secondly, classical music audiences are in decline. We know young people love classical music, so with only 2% of classical audiences being under 25, we need to be better at attracting young audiences.
Together, both these issues are holding back the UK music industry. Our campaign seeks to highlight the brilliance of young musicians, create more performance opportunities, and bring younger audiences out to experience live music.
WHAT WE WILL DO:
Over the next 12 months, Music for Youth will raise funds to carry out a national audience development research project with young people. We want the voice of young people to help shape the future of the music industry. We will ask our network of 40,000 young musicians across the UK for their thoughts and opinions so we can better understand what young people want and how the music industry can help.
In addition, we will:
• Support nine regional MfY young ambassadors to bang the drum for young musicians in their communities
• Launch a new National Festival covering the Southwest, Midlands, Northeast and Northern Ireland
• Relaunch Frequencies as the music agency for early-career musicians and those interested in careers in music industry
• Create 100 new non-performance work placement roles across our events
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
• See page 05 for more information about ways to donate
• Go and see early career musicians at local venues
Share your story with
by 31st December 2022
Share your story online! We would love to hear how you have supported young musicians, from previous MFY events and at other music events nationwide. Young musicians deserve an audience.
Music for Youth’s role is to advocate for young musicians and support them on their journey through staging performances in the community and at major venues. It takes a crew to put on a show and we are committed to career development in non-performance roles, so we train young people in non-performance roles at our events backstage.

LPMAM STUDENT ENSEMBLE
The London Performing Academy of Music (LPMAM) is a new Music Conservatoire focused on Innovation, Diversity and Inclusion. The LPMAM’s vision is to prepare a new, diverse generation of musicians that will shape the future of the classical music industry and push it into the 21st Century.
LPMAM is also the first Classical Music Conservatoire to offer full instrumental Classical music programmes online thanks to Sintonus, the revolutionary teaching platform developed by LPMAM President, Dr.Stefania Passamonte to connect artists, students and Universities from all over the world, and to unite music from all over the world. Sintonus was created to overcome the physical and economic barriers of distance, and which now allows us to overcome even the tide of war!
LPMAM started its Academic Year 2021/22 with exciting international events and partnerships with renowned Music Institutions and Universities, among those were the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Kyiv and Kharkiv University of the Arts in Ukraine.
On 22nd February 2022, a delegation of LPMAM professors was due to fly to Kyiv for a week of concerts and masterclasses... Their flights were cancelled the day before, but they have been in close contact with our
Ukrainian colleagues and students every day since then. Because the LPMAM partnership with the Ukrainian conservatoires preceded the war, LPMAM was the only conservatoire that could provide legal letters to request that music students be exempt from fighting and brought to London to complete their studies.
The LPMAM President set about helping those young people and preserving the musical future of Ukraine, helping organise military exemption documents for the students, and enabling the young musicians to journey through Europe while waiting for their visas before finally arriving in the UK. As a Council member of BPI- British Phonographic Industry, Stefania was also able to receive support from the UK Music Industry in finding homes for the students through the Home for Ukraine scheme and the National Musician’s Church, offering a space for regular performance and practice. She also set up the LPMAM Ukrainian Student Refugee Scholarship Fund, providing gifted students funding to make the journeys to Britain and scholarships to continue their studies as world-class musicians.
So far, LPMAM has managed to bring 51 students to safety, 30 of which are already studying physically in London. They’ve had tremendous help so far, but there are still another 40 needing to make the journey.

CREATIVE PROJECT TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER
Tuesday 15th November features a specially commissioned new work creatively produced by Music for Youth Mentor Adey Grummet and composed by celebrated musical director and composer Michael Henry. Over 2,000 young musicians from the length and breadth of the country will come together to perform this world premiere.
Back Together is an exploration of how we have pieced our music-making together now that we have emerged from our lockdown isolation. Things might have been lost or left behind but things have also been discovered and explored. We are not the same as we were and that is interesting, fertile and exciting territory.
There are three elements that form the Back Together springboard. The first being a comment by MFY young presenter Grace Harman, at the National Festival in Birmingham, who said that ‘there was a spark when we got back together’. There was then a comment from a music leader at the Swindon Regional Festival in Spring, who said that her group’s performance that day was the first time they had played under a roof for two years! And finally, on a personal reflection Adey said the thing that she missed the most was the physical sensation of creating sound right alongside colleagues, singing into the same air.
Back Together is a celebration of what it has been like to work up to the heartstopping moment of performance. From early days of beginning work on a new idea or starting a new piece
of music, getting notes right and rehearsing over and over, to making decisions about how to present the performance and actually arriving on stage in front of an audience, everyone has been on a massive journey.
Not only are we here with our individual projects to perform for each other but we have the mutual experience of having done it in an extraordinary moment in history. The story we tell of coming back together is one of creative inspiration, hard work, generosity and joy. Everyone on this stage tonight has done something amazing!
With thanks to Patrick Bailey for arranging the music for the Creative Project to ensure that every young musician has a part that is suitable for them.

Alongside early experiences as a school chorister and clarinettist, he wrote his first piece at the age of 7, wrote a symphony in biro at the age of 14, was lead vocalist and bass guitarist in a punk trio during his secondary school years and lead vocalist in a jazz funk quintet during his college years. He has been an eclectic, professional musician ever since, who now works primarily in theatre. BACK TOGETHER
LYRICS
A long time since I’d seen these friends New times, new faces, a new page to turn, and a new piece of music, a brand new idea, a lot to get right, a lot of notes to learn
When we got back together, there was a spark. For the first time in ages, we played, we sang under the same roof, in the same room We made the same air ring. We made our music take wing When we got back together And over and over we worked that piece Dynamics and rhythms and phrases to transform into movements and moments that sounded just right.
Bit by bit, our music took its form. Chorus When we got back together ...
Do we stand, Shall we sit In a group, In a line Should we all wear hats, or blue Will we ever remember the very last page Do we count this tempo in four or in two
Now I’m nervous, I’m happy, I’m proud and I’m thrilled.
I know we can make this great. I’m going to give it more than a hundred percent. Just watch all the dreams that we create
So here we are together, lit up by that first spark, and for you and for this moment we play, we sing in this incredible space, on this very special stage we make the same air ring, every beat, every breath, every string, and it’s the most AMAZING thing to make our music take wing Now we are back together

LINCOLNSHIRE MASSED ENSEMBLE LED BY BOSTON MUSIC SERVICE
475 young people, aged between 8–21, from schools across Lincolnshire are performing at this year’s Proms on Wednesday 16th November.
The Massed Ensemble is singing and playing from memory with inspiration drawn from Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella Festival performance where she dazzled the audience performing with a fabulous marching band. The young performers are from schools across the county and led by our Boston Music Centre who are celebrating their 30th anniversary. The Lincolnshire Market Town has been described ‘as the most divided place in England’ but they are truly united in their music making. Many of the young performers have English as their second or even third language and some of the young instrumentalists have only been playing since September! This medley of Beyoncé hits brings together our most and least experienced young musicians, side by side, and it’s truly breath-taking to watch.
