2021-2022 SEASON

TOGETHER, WE ACHIEVE MORE Thank you all for your patience, resilience, and support through this, my first year as Executive Director. It’s no coincidence that our collaboration series with Prescott Park Arts Festival and 3S Artspace was called All Together Now because we truly could not have accomplished as much apart. By forging new partnerships and making strong connections with these two organizations, we survived by working together. We are so thankful for your support and generosity—you made this an even bigger success.

Photo: PizzutiPhotography.com

I’m thrilled that other community partnerships are returning too. I’m greatly looking forward to working together again with Ogunquit Playhouse on Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, back by popular demand! The holidays have never been so bright! Our resident orchestra, the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, will return to our big stage with their new season. It will be so nice to have the full orchestra back in the theater. What a joy! Thanks to our work with the state on guidelines, our new HVAC system, and our patrons’ and staff’s diligence with social-distancing and mask use, we hosted thousands of people at hundreds of in-person shows safely. We’re proud to report that The Music Hall had zero transmissions in our 20-21 season. Thank you all for keeping our team and your fellow show-goers safe!

Tina Sawtelle Executive Director, The Music Hall

WHEN THE CURTAIN RISES

Photo: Sydney Bilodeau Photography SydneyBPhoto.com

Twenty-one years ago, I performed at The Music Hall for the very first time. Walking out onto that stage with my bass guitar in hand, I felt an electricity unlike anything I had experienced before, a sense of history and culture and vitality and, well, home. The view back then was quite different, and it is striking to realize how far this venue—a treasured landmark and historic performance space of national significance—as well as this organization, its devoted team, and indeed our entire community has come since.

This is no accident. The Hall is simultaneously a realization and reflection of our community and people, an institution dedicated to both inspiring and delivering moments of joyful entertainment, contemplative enlightenment, and meaningful engagement with and for our audience, our peers, our friends, our families. We are all, in a sense, growing up together. Like many of you, I have witnessed firsthand this evolution, watching our region become a vacation destination on ‘best of’ lists, TV segments, and blog posts alike. Perhaps I am biased because I am a musician, but no matter how popular our town becomes, I believe the arts will remain the beating heart of the Seacoast—and The Music Hall’s contribution to that pulse has been steady and strong year after year, even throughout this recent reality-bending epoch. Yet none of it would be possible without your support, membership, and patronage, because it is you who are our own beating heart. We are so incredibly grateful for all that you have done and continue to do for us, and the foundation you provide is what allows us to keep serving this wonderful community that we call home. Sixteen years ago, I became the Music Director for the Hall’s collaboration with New Hampshire Public Radio, Writers on a New England Stage, and eight years ago I joined the Board of Trustees. Now, I am honored to serve as Chair, working alongside a visionary leader in Executive Director Tina Sawtelle; a dedicated and resilient staff; and an accomplished, skilled Board. We all remain steadfast in our commitment to advance The Music Hall’s mission to delight and illuminate while simultaneously expanding our offerings, introducing new and different types of programming while bringing back old favorites from our own backyard and beyond. You can count on the fact that we’ll continue to be there for you, and we hope that you’ll be there for us as well. Looking forward to seeing each of you again when the curtain rises!

A Joyful Juneteenth Celebration with N'Kenge at the Historic Theater Photo Credit: Alanna Hogan Photography

As we learn and grow, new initiatives are born—so we launched Interconnections! This new umbrella series will encapsulate much of what we are already doing while allowing us to expand and adapt along with the times. The Music Hall has been and will continue to be at the forefront of tackling issues such as social justice and inclusivity. As a community gathering place, we have the responsibility to make sure our community’s voices are represented and new partnerships are forged. We here at The Music Hall frequently ask ourselves how we can continue to learn and more importantly, take action. As we build upon our history of similar programs, we are looking to expand in the future with this new series. Interconnections will focus on six areas: Climate Change; Leadership and Entrepreneurship; Addiction and Recovery; Social Justice, Anti-racism, and Human Rights; Education, Accessibility, and Inclusion; and Isolation and Mental Health. While this will primarily apply to events and partnerships, staff training (such as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training with the Mars Hill Group’s Jermaine Moore) will also fall under this umbrella. Ever committed to these areas and issues, Kennebunk Savings has graciously stepped up as the Interconnections series sponsor, allowing us the flexibility and funding to launch this effort. CONTINUING TO TREASURE OUR FUTURE Never have capital gifts so timely addressed a need than this year of COVID. Capital gifts provided through an infrastructure campaign opportunistically coincided with the need for better air filtration. Our planned HVAC upgrade fit into a dark period of the pandemic and we were able to add medical-grade HEPA filtration and ionization in the process. This fully prepared the theater to bring audiences back in compliance with CDC regulations. Similarly, a new lighting system brought both labor and energy efficiencies during a challenging time. Your feedback on both comfort and the show experience confirm these enhancements are notable and appreciated by audiences. A much needed Green Room and Dressing Room Block overhaul are next up on our project list, along with a reimagining of The Loft. We are so grateful for the generous participation of the following donors in our continuing campaign: Brenda Baker and Stephen Baum Thomas and Patience Chamberlin Martha Fuller Clark and Geoffrey Clark Cogswell Benevolent Trust Davis Family Foundation Karen and David Della Penta Stephen A. WEATHERING THE STORM The arts are central to our humanity. They inspire us, they bring us joy, they help us to grow and express ourselves, and they build bridges between cultures. The Music Hall is a fundamental component of our thriving community, as well as a key player in the region’s economic vitality. Through the generosity of friends like you, The Music Hall has weathered many storms over its 140+ years. The pandemic threatened our future, but with your help, we have weathered this storm, too, and we continue to pursue our mission to enrich the lives of Seacoast residents. The Music Hall would like to offer a special note of gratitude to the following individuals and entities who provided essential pandemic relief and assistance, including: • Everyone who donated to our COVID Emergency Fund, and the anonymous donor who seeded the fund with a substantial matching gift • Our steadfast sponsors, who have supported us through thick and thin • Our members and patrons who purchased tickets, contributed dollars, and provided us with motivation to continue • Our dedicated and hardworking Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers • The NH Governor's Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery • The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts • Jeff Johnston and the late Mark Stebbins, who developed the innovative Together 250 fundraising campaign to assist a group of Portsmouth nonprofits • Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who from our stage hosted a virtual roundtable for Shuttered Venue Operators Grant applicants • All of our representatives who fought for and made possible the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program established by the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act, and amended by the American Rescue Plan Act • The City of Portsmouth Health Department, who provided vaccination clinics • Our colleagues on the Mayor's Blue Ribbon Committee to Reopen Portsmouth • Our collaborators in the Performing Arts Venues Group and our fellow NH historic theaters •••

STAYING GREEN To help protect our town, community, and Earth, we’ve been making some serious changes around here to increase our sustainability. So far, some of the changes The Music Hall has made: • During the COVID-19 shutdown, we replaced the aged HVAC with one that is both more efficient and has higher filtration rates • Eliminated the use of 22,500 single-use plastic bottles a year • Transitioned to strawless, reusable souvenir cups • Swapped out almost all disposables for compostable versions and added composting • Incorporated state-of-the-art and energy-efficient lights and windows • Incorporated Bluedrop Water’s fountain system, switched to fountain soda and canned beer, eliminating plastic and glass bottles But we’re not done yet! We’re future-proofing, not only with a sustainable business model but also with some upgrades. We hope you will join us in this important endeavor to be sustainable. It can be as simple as enjoying still or sparkling water in a compostable cup!

IN MEMORIAM

MARK R. STEBBINS 1954 - 2021

Innovator, entrepreneur, developer, and philanthropist Mark R. Stebbins was a generous benefactor of causes across New Hampshire and beyond. Through his support of The Music Hall and our nonprofit peers through initiatives like Together 250, Mark set an example for business leaders to follow and left a legacy for the benefit of all.

BRIAN G. MCDEVITT 1955 - 2021

An intelligent and articulate businessperson, Brian G. McDevitt was also a comedian, always ready with a wisecrack. We will miss this big personality in our community. •••

OUR NEW HVAC SYSTEM MINIMIZES THE RISK! Photo credit: David J. Murray/ClearEyePhoto.com

The Music Hall’s Facilities team worked diligently to complete phase one of our infrastructure project in which we replaced our aging 40-ton HVAC unit with a modern 70-ton unit. Along with improved ductwork and upgraded controls, the recovery rate—the rate in which fresh and current building air is pushed through the filters and our iWAVE system—has increased by almost double! The system is programmed to be intuitive with increased airflow as patron numbers rise. Along with this new HVAC, we have also installed an ionizing system called iWAVE. This system pulls particulates together into larger material that will be caught by our medical-grade filters and kills bacteria and viruses by removing hydrogen and starving them of their food source.
