What an opportunity we have together to live in a city that offers all the rich experiences of a large urban area but with the comfort of a small tidal community. So pull up a chair, and open this little dream magazine and think of all the nights, afternoons and evenings you’ll spend among friends here at The Music Hall. So many people ask us how we come across the acts, films, and musicians we present, and I have to give it up to our curatorial bench – we have a group of passionate dedicated curators. So, even if you’re not in the know about something, you can put your trust in us – try a little discovery. A dash of adventure and magic goes a long way to refreshing one’s point of view and giving us much needed perspective.
The best concert experience in New England! Domed ceiling + wooden floors = superior acoustics. The 900-seat theater is an intimate setting for acts from Crosby & Nash to Bright Eyes, from Lyle Lovett to kd lang. Relax and sip signature cocktails in the dazzling new lobby before or after concerts.

All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 Saturday, December 4, 2010 • 4pm and 8pm Tickets: $38, $30
Imagine putting down your rifle and climbing over trenches to deliver the gift of song – to your enemy. All Is Calm recalls the remarkable World War I truce between Allied Forces and German soldiers in No Man’s Land on Christmas, 1914.When we premiered this acclaimed production two years ago, the message of peace resonated with a town known for its singular role in the 1905 Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the Russo-Japanese War. On a stark set, the men’s a capella group Cantus and Theater Latté Da sing European carols and war-songs – a testament to the power of music to make peace even in wartime. Written by Peter Rothstein, musical arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach. “This show was so beautiful. There was this feeling of peace in the theater when the show ended. When we got up from our seats we saw a lot of people hugging each other - we realized we had just experienced something very special.” – Music Hall patron SPONSOR: Regal Limousine Service

The Age of Participation By Patricia Lynch and Kathleen Soldati PL: Why do you think The Music Hall is such an important part of our community? KS: The theatre lies on hallowed ground, it’s a magnet for the community – people are drawn to it as a place to talk, to be entertained, to see friends. I think that’s why the events we do where people are participating – Writers on a New England Stage or Wildcard Movies are some of our most popular. KS: How do you define the word community? PL: I see it in the broadest possible terms. With our Community Partners Program, nonprofits such as the NH Film Festival, Sexual Assault Support Services and the Housing Partnership benefit from using The Music Hall for their events. We support independent musicians by hosting the RPM Challenge, we work with the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC) to do master classes with visiting artists, the Teen Outlook Center has brought at risk teens backstage to meet Brandi Carlile, we have a booth at Pro Portsmouth’s Market Square Day every year, Leadership Seacoast held its annual retreat here, and students from eight area high schools are our guests at our Writers events – and go back stage to meet the author after the show. Partners such as WomenAid of Portsmouth and Rain for the Sahel and Sahara link to a live show and add immeasurably to the evening. We use our Wildcard Movie series to put a spotlight on our commitment to sustainability and the environment with our film (and post-film panel) selections such as No Impact Man or Under Our Skin. Beyond that, our board and staff are active members of community boards, helping to strengthen the Seacoast even further with their wisdom. This is truly the Age of Participation and The Music Hall takes its commitment to building community quite seriously – it means that we’re more integrated than ever into the Seacoast!

Music Hall Box Office Makes it Easy Today, more and more theatres are turning to corporate ticketing agencies to manage their Box Office operations off site. Bucking this national trend, The Music Hall is committed to maintaining a full service in-house box office. What does that mean for you as a patron? First and foremost, our Box Office staff knows the theatre; they know the sight lines, which seats have more leg room, in short, all the quirks of seating in a historic theatre. Second, they live here in the Seacoast so they can easily provide directions, recommend local restaurants, hotels, places to park, and other area attractions. Third, our staff mails out your tickets within 24 hours of your order and at no extra charge –a great convenience since many other theatres charge for shipping tickets. Fourth, there are fees. Of course no one likes paying fees but if the Music Hall were to close its Box Office and use the services of an agency like Ticketmaster, fees would definitely go up – you’d probably pay double in fees. Not to mention that you’d be talking to someone in a call center located somewhere other than Portsmouth, New Hampshire! The Music Hall Box Office is open Mon. - Sat., noon - 6pm.
The Music Hall Box Office Information Address: 28 Chestnut Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801 Phone: (603) 436-2400 Hours: 12 noon to 6pm, Monday – Saturday, closed most holidays. On performance days – open until 30 minutes after curtain time. For Sunday matinee performances – open at noon. For Sunday evening performances – open at 4pm. Ticket Sales:
Tickets may be purchased in the following manner:
Online: At www.themusichall.org. Online purchases are subject to a $4.00 per ticket nonrefundable surcharge. By phone: Call (603) 436-2400 and charge to your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express card. Phone orders are subject to a $4.00 per ticket nonrefundable service fee (up to five tickets). By mail: With a completed order form to The Music Hall Box Office, 28 Chestnut Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801. In person: At the box office window at 28 Chestnut Street (cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover & American Express). Discounts - Discounted tickets for most shows are available to members (Advocate level and above, see Membership Benefits on order form), children (under 12), students, and senior citizens (age 60 and over). Group Rates - Group rates may be available for certain performances. Call (603) 433-3100 ext. 25 to make arrangements. Call early to ensure the best possible seating. Last Call Tickets - Where applicable, discounted tickets for Music Hall presented events may be purchased on a “first come, first served” basis at the box office, 15 minutes prior to curtain time. Gift Certificates - Available in any denomination at the box office, redeemable toward any Music Hall presented event. Gift certificates and credits must be redeemed noon to 6pm Monday through Saturday. Refunds & Exchanges - Tickets to Music Hall Presents performances may be returned no later than 48 hours before the event for a Music Hall credit only. Members will not be charged for this service. Non-members will be charged a $2 fee per ticket. Within 48 hours of an event, tickets may be returned to the box office as a tax-deductible donation to The Music Hall. Weather - If The Music Hall cancels or postpones a performance, a full refund of the printed ticket price will be available through the box office (phone and internet service fees are nonrefundable). The Music Hall does not close for inclement weather, and does not give refunds or exchanges to those unable to attend an event because of weather. The Music Hall does everything in its power to remain open for all performances. Parking - The Music Hall does not offer private parking; however, a drop-off area located at the main entrance to the theater provides access to the lobby. The Portsmouth Parking Garage is located on Hanover Street (with additional entrances on Fleet and Ladd streets), a short walk to The Music Hall. Disabled Access - The Music Hall is a multi-level historical facility. A staffed elevator provides direct access to the theater’s orchestra level of the auditorium and the concessions lobby on the second level. A limited amount of accessible seating is available to patrons with disabilities and their family or friends. Our staff makes every effort to assist and accommodate all patrons. The Music Hall is equipped with an FM assisted listening device available to patrons who are hard of hearing. A unisex accessible restroom is located on the street level. For specific ticket or access information, please call the box office at (603) 436-2400. One-month advance notice for sign language interpretation is requested. For individuals who do not use traditional print, please call to request large print or Braille formats. The Music Hall thanks the Rye Lions Club for providing a wheelchair for use by our patrons. Please make any special seating requests when ordering tickets.
