I try to shop in those places as often as possible. They all help create the community that I've come to love! When the grandchildren visit they can't wait to head down to The Friendly Toast for their favorite pancakes- anytime of day! Insider Scoop on 25th Anniversary Kitchen Tour We are so excited to celebrate our 25th Anniversary Kitchen Tour on Saturday, May 7 in The Music Hall’s home town of Portsmouth. “This walking tour will take you to a variety of homes right in the heart of downtown,” says Special Events Manager Ashleigh Tucker Pollock. “You can catch up on the latest kitchen trends, see some of Portsmouth’s newest building developments, and explore the city’s great shops and restaurants. It’s a great way to spend time with your Mom on Mother’s Day weekend!” To learn more about what’s in store this year, content editor Regina Baraban interviewed Kitchen Tour Committee Co-Chair Cori McGrath, Broker at Olde Port Properties.
2016
The Kitchen Tour is “coming home” to Portsmouth this year, a city you know well. Is there any design style that you would define as uniquely Portsmouth? I think the external architecture of much of the new condo developments are unique to Portsmouth. Most are brick buildings with some added design elements to help them blend into their historical surroundings. Inside, the interiors reflect a transitional style—traditional elements crossed with urban and modern flair. Many of our 25th anniversary kitchens are a good example of “transitional design,” the new buzz word in kitchen design.
2014
Can you give us more details on the newest design trends in Portsmouth kitchens? Using stone counters continues to be a trend, both in terms of using a variety of stone types, and also having more than one counter color and/ or type in one kitchen. Also, while the lighter, neutral, gray color palates have continued to dominate, many people are using art to add a splash of color in the kitchen. There’s a lot of diversity on the tour this year, from new condos to free-standing historic homes, and from modern, crisp white lines to rich colors and chunky furniture-style cabinetry. I think there’s a kitchen to appeal to everyone’s taste.
2012
Photos: GregWestPhotography.
Do you have a recommendation of what should absolutely not be missed? One of the condos is converted from the warehouse of what used to be Peavey’s Hardware on Market St. The owner kept much of the original character, including the pulley system to bring items up to the storage area. Added features also have a vintage look, for example, a new brick oven was made using original bricks from the property. I see people spending a lot of time in this house to soak in all the details!
Kitchen Tour Tips • Plan your route, you don't have to start at house #1! • Make sure to get your tickets before the day of the tour. This saves you from waiting in the box office line the day of and it’s a little bit cheaper. • This is a self guided walking tour, make sure to wear your walking shoes. • Keep an eye on the forecast for the day. This event is rain or shine, bring an umbrella and sunscreen just in case. 10
