Great Comedies: SAFETY LAST! (1923) Tue., 1/26 @ 7pm • Loft NR • 1h 20m • USA
Of the American Film Institute’s 100 top suspense/thriller movies of all time, this is the oldest, and the only farce: who’d have thought that a perilous climb up the side of a skyscraper could be so hilarious? The equal of Chaplin or Keaton, Harold Lloyd was thought by producer Hal Roach too handsome to do silent comedy – so he slapped on a pair of horn-rimmed glasses, and a stunt-loving comic star was born. Also featuring Lloyd’s wife-to-be, the adorable Mildred Davis. PLUS: to get things rolling, a surprise Buster Keaton short! Subscriptions for the Film Club (series of six) are available for $75, individual tickets are available for $15. Tickets are limited, book your subscription today. No passes. Ticket price includes a free popcorn and post-film discussion with host and moderator Kent Stephens.

Celebrating Innovation and Leadership We now have eight to 10 Innovation and Leadership events a year— from forums such as Digital Portsmouth, to Film Matters documentaries, to literary events with such luminaries as TED Talk sensation Amy Cuddy. It’s a great mix, inspired in part by my interest in navigating 21st century thought, and in part by how the topics of leadership, innovation, sustainability, mindfulness, and navigating our digital lives are attracting bigger and bigger audiences. The series has grown organically, in sync with the Seacoast’s vibrant culture. As a committed mindfulness student myself, I’ve grown along with this series. From Deepak Chopra’s profound meditation with 800 people in the Historic Theater to Dan Harris’s inspirational odyssey on being 10% happier, our I+L events have made all the difference. —Patricia Lynch, Executive Director The impetus for me to create the Digital Portsmouth series was to shine the spotlight on the tech and digital creative community in and around the Seacoast. There is art and beauty to be found in all these topics. I am also collaborating with Crystal Paradis to bring a new Innovation + Leadership series to life called Let’s Talk About… Last spring we hosted Let’s Talk About the Heroin Epidemic, one of the most powerful and emotional discussions that I’ve experienced. I moderated a discussion by community members and experts from the prevention, treatment, recovery, and enforcement professions. When I asked the assembled group of over 100 people how many had been personally affected by drug or alcohol abuse every hand went up.
The goal is not only to inform and discuss, but to give people simple, tangible, achievable things to do that can help solve the challenges that we all face. Look for Digital Portsmouth: The Art of Copywriting on Thu. January 21 and Let’s Talk About Poverty on Wed., February 17. – Monte Bohanan, Director of Marketing & Innovation + Leadership Curator Part of community building is connecting people with complementary interests and skills. Through the Digital Portsmouth forums, Alpha Loft helps to set focus on numerous compelling topics—from Bitcoin to video games— and bring people together for healthy conversation. We continue to receive feedback about the topics months, even years after the events themselves. The events are always very well attended and the topics live on afterwards, as attendees visit local bars and restaurants to continue the conversations, and community members reach out to us and our speakers to learn more. Many people from within our community are inspired to not only suggest new topics, but also to volunteer as speakers. Personally, I’ve learned that our community is amazingly talented. No matter the topic, we always have a lineup of outstanding speakers who want to participate. —Joshua Cyr, Director of Education, Alpha Loft & Guest Curator, Digital Portsmouth
Our Film Matters Series - Global Issues/ Local Resources - developed out of my own experience of watching excellent and compelling documentaries, and then wanting to discuss the film, and the topics therein, with others afterwards, along with the desire for access to further resources in order to learn more or for becoming
The series is a fine and popular example of our community’s desire for programming which encourages participation in an age of growing isolation. Certainly we all have times active/engaged/involved.
we want to ‘be entertained’ - and then there are times we want to get out of the house, or put away the tablet, and dig in, discuss, shake the dust off the dark matter. —Chris Curtis, Film and Outreach Manager
