WELCOME
to our
2016-2017 SEASON
Dear Friends, Patrons, and Members, Welcome to our 2016-2017 season. Thanks to you, we are fully living our mission of bringing the best of arts and culture to the Seacoast region, while we connect in meaningful ways to our community. This past season we saw higher attendance than ever before. Our community initiatives flourished, from our $6 a seat School Days Series to free master classes, and from meet and greet opportunities for students to free forums on community issues. Writers on a New England Stage turned 10 and we celebrated this milestone with our partner New Hampshire Public Radio. Our documentary series Film Matters, brought together local experts to chew over global matters. Our expanding partnership with The University of New Hampshire showcased UNH faculty on discussion panels and offered free tickets for students. This past holiday season, we delighted nearly 12,000 patrons with Irving Berlin's White Christmas, the Broadway musical, in our partnership with Ogunquit Playhouse. We have a number of clubs that offer insight into books, films, and opera—all while building social connections. Sixty world-class performances this past season had tickets for under $30. We are proud of our 60+ community partners, our Fill the Hall Food Drive with Seacoast Family Food Pantry, and the community outreach by both our board and staff. A special shout out to our 300 volunteers—we couldn’t do what we do without you! So what is there to get excited about for 2016-2017? So much! Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer comes with his book, The Court and The World, this fall. A lavish production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast with the Ogunquit Playhouse casts a magical spell for the holidays. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, comedian Kathy Griffin, Telluride by the Sea, global music in the Loft, more Innovation + Leadership offerings, and of course surprises dropped in every month, are all in the forecast. There has never been a better time to be a member.
See you in the theater! Patricia Lynch Executive Director

MILES AHEAD
extraordinary cinema
R • 1h40m • US 5/27, 5/29, 5/31, 6/1, 6/2 @ 7pm Inspired by events in the life of Miles Davis. A wildly entertaining, impressionistic, no-holds-barred portrait of one of 20th century music's creative geniuses, featuring a career-defining performance by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle in the title role. Cheadle also co-wrote and directed the film. A wily music reporter, Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) forces his way into Davis' house and, over the next couple of days, the two men unwittingly embark on an adventure to recover a stolen tape of Davis' latest compositions.
THE LOBSTER
R • 1h 58m • UK 6/3, 6/4, 6/8, 6/9, 6/14, 6/15 @ 7pm; 6/12 @ 3pm David (Colin Farrell) has just been dumped by his wife. To make matters worse, David lives in a society where single people have 45 days to find true love, or else they are turned into an animal of their choice and released into the woods. David is kept at a mysterious hotel while he searches for a new partner, and after several romantic misadventures decides to make a daring escape. Also stars Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly and Ben Whishaw.
A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING R • 1h 38m • UK
6/17, 6/18, 6/21, 6/22 @ 7pm; 6/19 @ 3pm Cultures collide when an American businessman (Tom Hanks) is sent to Saudi Arabia to close what he hopes will be the deal of a lifetime. Baffled by local customs and stymied by an opaque bureaucracy, he eventually finds his footing with the help of a wise-cracking taxi driver (Alexander Black) and a beautiful Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury).
THE MEDDLER
PG • 1h 40m • US 6/24 @ 7pm; 6/26 @ 3pm With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini (Susan Sarandon) has happily relocated from New Jersey to LA to be near her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), a successful (but still single) screenwriter. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others - as well as her own - and find a new purpose in life.
KRISHA
extraordinary cinema
R • 1h 23m • US 5/27, 5/28, 5/31, 6/1, 6/2 @ 7pm, 5/29 @ 3pm When Krisha shows up at her sister's home on Thanksgiving morning, her close and extended family greet her with a mixture of warmth and wariness. Almost immediately, a palpable unease permeates the air, one which only grows in force as Krisha gets to work cooking the turkey and trying to make up for lost time by catching up with her various relatives, chief among them her nephew, Trey.
BORN TO BE BLUE
R • 1h 37m • UK 6/7, 6/10, 6/11, 6/12, 6/15 @ 7pm Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as jazz legend Chet Baker, whose tumultuous life is thrillingly reimagined with wit, verve, and style to burn. In the 1950s, Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of heroin addiction.
VIVA
R • 1h 40m • Cuba 6/17, 6/18, 6/19, 6/22, 6/23 @ 7pm Jesus is a hairdresser for a troupe of drag performers in Havana, but dreams of being a performer. When he finally gets his chance to be on stage, his father Angel, who has been absent from his life for 15 years, emerges from the crowd and punches him in the face. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, Viva becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one another and become a family again.
WEINER
R • 1h 36m • US 6/25, 6/26, 6/28, 6/30 @ 7pm Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner's catastrophic race for Mayor of New York City in 2013 is detailed in this behind-the-scenes documentary. Weiner became embroiled in his second widely publicized sexting scandal during the race, derailing his once-promising political career. Weiner is directed by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg and received its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

The 2015- 2016 Season has been full of fantastic music, thought-provoking authors, engaging cinema, and the magic of Broadway. Music Hall staff members look back at at some of their favorite shows from last season as well as what shows they are looking forward to seeing next season.

Hands down, my favorite event this year at The Music Hall was our annual Gala, The Event: 1940s Officers' Club. We transformed the Historic Theater stage into a Casablanca-esque nightclub complete with a live radio announcer, patriotic bunting, WWII artifacts, an historically accurate menu from UNH Conferences & Catering, and even live singers in the style of The Andrew Sisters. It was the perfect way to help raise funds for our beloved theater and Veterans Count. Guests went all out and dressed in their best military and 1940s attire which made one think they had really stepped back in time.

Tough call for me. I loved all our Innovation + Leadership work because I felt I learned so much! Loved this year's Telluride by the Sea, and was wowed like everyone with the Ogunquit Playhouse Production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas as our holiday Broadway musical. Next year, that's tough again. Looking forward to the Sarah McLachlan Intimately Yours show, the over the top magic of the Ogunquit Playhouse's Production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast for our holiday musical, having Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer here to talk about the Court and the world, and literary icon Tom Wolfe for Writers on a New England Stage with New Hampshire Public Radio. –Patricia Lynch, Executive Director
Next season, I am looking forward to Seven Fingers of the Hand. What an interesting concept for a show that showcases my passions - storytelling, dance, food, and chaos. –Ashleigh Tucker Pollock, Special Events Manager & Rental Coordinator
My favorite Loft show was Shemekia Copeland; she had a powerful Blues voice that was complemented perfectly by some of the best musicians I have seen in a long time. My favorite Historic Theater show was The Lone Bellow, they had a fun, unique sound that was perfect for our space. Their stage presence and overall performance made for a great night that left everyone wanting to hear more music. I’m looking forward to seeing Kamasi Washington; it’s not often you get to see someone who is in the midst of changing how people view Jazz music. –Ian Martin, A/V Assistant Technical Director 8

Last season I was thrilled to program Most Likely to Succeed, a compelling film that highlighted the issues with our education system, something that I feel very strongly about. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the Internet Cat Video Film Festival, what a great night that was!
My favorite show of this past season was, incidentally, my first one after I started working here: Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. I was already excited to start working here, and seeing the amazing energy that he brought to the stage and how excited everyone in the audience was really confirmed that I was going to be happy here. The music, the lights, the people - it all combined to make a uniquely memorable and exhilarating evening.
I’m always looking forward to Telluride by the Sea, well, because, it’s TbtS! Who wouldn’t be excited about a whole weekend of films that are going to be some of the most buzzed about of the year.
Next season, I'm most excited for Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Not only was I a big musical theater geek growing up, but this show was one of my favorites. I was right in the target age range for the movie when it came out, I got to see the touring production when I was a kid (which I remember being completely amazed by), and I wore out my cassette of the original cast recording.
–Chris Curtis, Programming Coordinator
–Wes Lovell, Assistant Box Office Manager
