COMMUNITY

With your help, last year we filled The Hall with over five tons of food; help us double that this year. Join us for the second annual Fill the Hall Food Drive, a collaboration between The Music Hall and the Seacoast Family Food Pantry, on Saturday, June 25 from 9am – 5pm at The Music Hall’s Historic Theater in downtown Portsmouth. Help families in need, and enjoy free activities that include historic and tech tours, live music by The Soggy Po Boys, and the family-friendly movie Song of the Sea at the Loft. Stop by the theater with nonperishable food items to help us once again Fill The Hall. The food collected will feed the hundreds of struggling families in the Seacoast region through the Summer Meals 4 Kids program, that provides meals for kids who rely on school meals throughout the summer. Everything collected will be distributed by Seacoast Family Food Pantry to children who struggle to get enough to eat during the summer.

Get a group together. Donate. Get involved. Volunteer to gather food donations and deliver them to The Music Hall, gather your friends, your business, and your neighbors to help Fill The Hall. Last year, many of you came together to help fill the pantry with enough food to last five weeks. This year, once again with your help, we can do more. For information about the event, or to get involved go to TheMusicHall.org.

Community Conversations in the Loft In the past five years since The Music Hall Loft opened in April 2011, we’ve been privileged to host all manner of community events. “The Loft has become a home to enhanced community opportunities in so many ways,” notes Executive Director Patricia Lynch. “It’s become a great venue for meaningful conversations about innovation, leadership, local issues, and literature. When people gather for such Music Hall events as Film Club, Opera Connection, Writers in the Loft, and Student Master Classes with guest artists and writers, they love being in the Loft’s fun, easy atmosphere where cultural life is enhanced through learning and socializing.” Here’s what some of our community partners and presenters have to say about their Loft experiences:

QUIANA AGBAI

Blogger, Harlem Lovebirds (in New England) “Speaking at Digital Portsmouth was a fantastic way to celebrate my one year anniversary of moving to Portsmouth. Having attended my first Digital Portsmouth event as an audience member a few months before, and then experiencing it as a presenter,

I found it a welcoming space conducive to engaging discussion. It's an ideal venue to share ideas such as those on Digital Portsmouth's robust schedule. I look forward to being a regular attender and hope to have the chance to speak again.”

TOM PAYNE

UNH Associate Professor, MFA Program in Creative Writing “The Salman Rushdie Master Class in the Loft was such a wonderful experience for my students—a rare opportunity

to meet with one of the leading writers of our time in an intimate environment. They won't soon forget it. And this kind of community outreach is important.”

10

NOW

(603) 436-2400

RUSS GRAZIER JR.

CEO and Director of Music Education, Portsmouth Music and Arts Center: "It’s so exciting for our young students to attend meet and greet events with visiting artists at the Loft, and to get up onstage to participate in workshops with musicians they emulate. Our mission at PMAC is to build community through the arts, and that’s exactly what our partnership with The Music Hall and our student events at the Loft enables us to do."

CRYSTAL PARADIS

VitalDesigns, Director of Communications “At the Let's Talk About the Heroin Epidemic event in the Loft last April, the packed room was asked to raise their hands if they or someone they loved had been affected by the heroin epidemic. All hands went up, and the discussion that followed was one of the most compassionate and constructive community conversations I've experienced. People with a personal history of addiction, parents who had lost their children, medical professionals on the front line of treatment, and law enforcement whose hearts had been broken by what they'd witnessed were all coming together in support of one another. People left not only connected to organizations, individuals, and tools with which to take action, but also a greater understanding of their neighbors.”

DENNIS NEIL KLEINMAN

Opera Expert/WriterProducer; Opera Connection Host “For the last five years I have had the pleasure of presenting Opera Connection at the Loft, and I think the venue is key to our success. The whole point of the Connection is to make opera accessible, and the relaxed intimacy of the Loft helps ratchet down the intimidation factor surrounding these magnificent works. I also love interaction, and the closeness of the audience to the performance area makes the Connection feel less like a lecture and more like a sharing of knowledge, with everyone participating.”

KENT STEPHENS

Professional Theatre Artist and Cinema Aficionado; Music Hall Film Club Host: “The Loft feels like the world’s most luxurious screening room, which makes it the perfect venue for a series that mixes cinephilia with socializing. The Film Club meets once monthly to enjoy and schmooze about movies presented in a series format, the current being Great Comics Make Great Comedies. As host I try to offer a broad palette in the commentary before each film: a little geekiness, a little historical perspective, a little People Magazine backstage gossip. In the hip and stimulating Loft, the audience rubs elbows (and thanks to the amenity of the Loft bar bends them as well!) and forms a warm community basking in the glow from the silver screen.”
