Before sax player Kamasi Washington gave an electrifying performance at The Music Hall on July 30, he met with a group of students from Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC) and invited them to listen in on the band’s sound check. “It’s an amazing opportunity for our students to meet with artists like Kamasi Washington,” said Russ Grazier, PMAC Executive Director. “Jazz musicians tend to be generous about spending time with students, but if it wasn’t for The Music Hall, there would not be any chance of a local meet-up with superstars like Kamasi.”

Telluride by the Sea Turns 18
September heralds the signs of fall: kids have gone back to school, pumpkins are plentiful, leaves are changing color, and Telluride by the Sea comes to Portsmouth. This fall, the beloved film festival returns with six top-notch films fresh from their debuts at the Telluride Film Festival. Once again, you have the chance to see the movies that everyone will be talking about, before they are released, in our beautifully restored theater. Along with the six movies playing at the Historic Theater, once again as a special Patron and Weekend pass holder benefit, we will be showing three movies at the Loft. This series of films, curated by Bill and Stella Pence and hosted by Trevor Bartlett, shines a light on aspects that are so special about the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. In the past, this series celebrated documentaries, Film Noir, silent films, and Masters’ Classics. This year, we’re celebrating films that have been discovered or rediscovered at Telluride. Aptly titled Lost and Found, the Pences have chosen three movies which highlight TFF’s record of unearthing classic or hard to find films. Mark your calendars and get your passes for what is sure to be a phenomenal weekend of cinema that will entertain, delight, and captivate you. Keep an eye on our blog TheMusicHall.org/Blog for insider tips, a great interview with Bill and Stella about Lost and Found, and more details about the Festival.
Be Our Guest! What do you get when you take the outstanding productions of the Ogunquit Playhouse, mix it with the charm of The Music Hall’s Historic Theater, and sprinkle in some Disney holiday magic? A can’t miss show! This December, the Ogunquit Playhouse and The Music Hall are bringing the beloved Disney show Beauty and the Beast to Portsmouth for three weeks. With stunning costumes and sets direct from London, Broadway actors, and a whole lot of holiday magic, it’s the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season. With a theme about seeing past the exterior and into the heart of someone, this tale as old as time captures the real meaning of the season. Join Belle, the Beast, and the rest of your favorite characters for a show that will delight, amaze, and inspire you. 10

University of New Hampshire Student Benefits The Marketing Department here at The Music Hall has partnered with the University of New Hampshire to offer a focused internship program to their students. This past spring, Colin Geaghan, a Music Performance major with a minor in Business Administration, concentrated on a strategy to inform UNH students of the many benefits that they receive here at TMH. By the end of the internship, Colin had not only created but implemented a multi-platform marketing strategy, including this article:
Last year, something big happened at The Music Hall, The University of New Hampshire officially became a contributing partner! If you currently are or know someone who is enrolled at UNH, you won’t want to miss this. As part of this partnership students with a valid ID can see most movies for FREE and get tickets for $11 to select shows. I’m not going to say this is the best news you’ve heard all day, but let’s face facts, The Music Hall has fantastic programming: from award-winning movies like Brooklyn, to world-renowned artists like Lyle Lovett. Pick your Wildcat up from UNH and head to downtown Portsmouth for a fun-filled day! Use your membership at local restaurants like The District, Portsmouth Brewery, or The Friendly Toast, shop around at a plethora of jewelry, clothing, and music shops, and take advantage of all of the fantastic benefits available to students. -Colin Geaghan
