CURATOR'S CORNER - Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator As we head into a new season there is so much I am looking forward to this fall. Here are a few of my top picks: I first discovered Shinyribs' (aka Kevin Russell) music while in Austin, Texas, where he played to a full house at Lucy's Chicken Shack. Texans are proud to claim him as their own; he's a fixture in the Lone Star State. He’ll be joined at the Loft by his amazing sidemen and women. You aren’t going to want to miss their Portsmouth debut on Thursday, August 31! I love radio and storytelling – especially when it’s done right. It fires up the imagination. I was a frequent listener of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion and you can still hear him reciting poetry and history on NPR's The Writer's Almanac. Catch him when he comes to the Historic Theater on October 8 for a special afternoon of stories and music.

92.5 The River & The Music Hall: A Perfect Partnership
Did you know that The Music Hall has a Book Club? It’s a member benefit for those at the Contributor level and above and meets on the second Monday of the month. The club is on summer break, but will return on Monday, September 11 with the book Crossing the Borders of Time. Content Marketing Manager, Kait Photo credit: Monte Bohanan Smith, talked with Book Club moderator, Dawn Heffron, about how she chooses the books, what she does to prepare, and what to expect when you come to a book club.
Take a mix of legendary artists, up-and-coming singer songwriters, an independent radio station, and a beloved performing arts center and you’ll create a perfect musical partnership. This month, we’re turning our Sponsor Spotlight on WXRV 92.5 the River, who has partnered with us for the last thirteen years and was one of the first to sign on to be an Intimately Yours sponsor.
You have a great variety of books coming up this season, how do you decide what books to pick? Starting in August, we are excited to announce that we will be featuring a monthly signature cocktail. Each month, our talented Front of House team is going to create a special drink that you can order at each time you join us at the Loft. Keep an eye out on our social media channels and our blog to stay up to date on the featured drink. At the Historic Theater, we’ve got the usual line up of fun candy and our delicious Popzup Popcorn (don’t forget to try out the wide variety of flavor seasonings), but did you know that we also have several different ice cream options? From ice cream sandwiches to chocolate covered bars, they are a great way to cool down. We’ve also added bottled Minute Maid Lemonade to our beverage offerings. Over at the Loft, we’ve added Old Stone cold brewed iced coffee. It’s brewed right in the heart of Portsmouth’s West End, by two local guys. Made up of just three ingredients; coffee, water, and chicory, the taste is so smooth that you won’t even need cream. This summer, beat the heat, grab a drink and a snack, and settle in for a season of great music and film at The Music Hall. 12 NOW 603.436.2400
SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
Book choices include a variety of genres, especially debut novels, books by local authors, work by authors featured on Writers on a New England Stage and Writers in the Loft, and nonfiction selections. Subject matter related to war and other cultures are of particular interest, although the participants are more in tune with the quality of the discussion than the actual novel per se. I spend a lot of time reading reviews, book summaries and previewing selections.
As an independent radio station, the River believes that discovering new music is one of life’s simple joys, a belief that is central to us here at The Music Hall, and one that we know our members and patrons hold dear. Over Diana Krall, June 2017 Photo credit: David J. Murray/Clear Eye Photo the years our partnership has grown along with both of our businesses. With the addition of the Loft, we are now able to showcase many River fan favorites such as Heather Maloney, Zach Williams (lead singer of the Lone Bellow), Ruby Rose Fox, and Pete Francis (of Dispatch) in a modern, intimate setting. The River listeners come from Boston all the way up to the Lakes region of New Hampshire, just as many of our patrons do. They have been and continue to be a constant and enthusiastic champion of the live music experience here at The Music Hall. We’ve been able to welcome the artists we all love like Graham Nash and Chris Isaak to our Intimately Yours series and introduce you to new acts such as Mason Jennings and Shinyribs as part of Live at the Loft thanks in part to this partnership. The River has become the place for music lovers to tune into and we’ve been thrilled to work along with them to bring great music to the area.
Some people pray, others stretch, and some meditate—do you have a ritual that you do right before every book club? I do a lot of prep so I usually end up with a plethora of notes and reference materials to review one more time prior to moderating the discussion. Then it's a brisk walk to our meeting venue, The Aria Lounge at Portwalk, in time to help play "host." I really enjoy greeting and touching base with as many people as possible. Each month there are new members who join a core group of regular attendees. I like to foster a welcoming atmosphere before we begin.
If someone was thinking about joining the Book Club, a social club open to members at the Contributor level and above, what could they expect when they come to one? They would meet a warm, affable, erudite group of people who enjoy a rousing discussion/ conversation about, not only the nuances of the book, but the book's relevance to our lives. Participants love learning new information as well as hearing first hand accounts of related experiences proffered by other members. Both men and women, ranging in age from about 40-81 years of age, participate passionately but respectfully.
