CREATING COMMUNITY As the Director of Institutional Advancement, I believe there are three key goals that guide the work we do: Stewardship, Sustainability, and Relevance. The Music Hall, soon to be 140 years old, is a rare jewel in the constellation of historic theaters not only here in the Northeast but around the country. As stewards of this beloved theater, we first and foremost, have the distinct privilege of being caretakers of its storied legacy on the Seacoast. With that comes the responsibility to create a model of sustainability that ensures the theater’s place in our community for generations to come. Through thoughtful, strategic planning we have paved the way to expand our community outreach efforts. Each year, we are stepping more fully into our mission of providing meaningful access to the underserved, young students, and lifelong Photo: David J. Murray, Clear Eye Photo learners. Through subsidized tickets, workshops with visiting artists, and a diverse line-up of dynamic discussions around critical issues of the day, we are paying it forward with a more connected and engaged community. Virtually every night of the week, you will find audiences in both of our venues and each month we see numerous participants gathering for our social clubs around the Seacoast. It reminds me of what Patricia Lynch shared with us a number of years ago: we have the opportunity to create the town we want to live in. Together, we are creating that place. Our economic impact is significant, the quality of life we contribute to is touted, and our feeling of well-being in gathering together is invaluable. Thank you for caring for your Music Hall. Gail VanHoy Carolan Director of Institutional Advancement, The Music Hall
CURATOR'S CORNER This month, as we kick off our 2017-2018 season, I wanted to share some of the shows that I am most excited to bring the Historic Theater. It’s true, I’m already dreaming of a white Christmas in July. It’s hard not to look forward to having this holiday card come to life in our Historic Theater, as the Ogunquit Playhouse’s Photo: David J. Murray, Clear Eye Photo production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas swings back to Portsmouth this winter. Packed full of iconic songs, awe-inspiring dance numbers, and all of the magic of Broadway, this show will delight your entire family. This show is sure to sell out and I highly recommend getting your tickets sooner rather than later. Also, if you gather a group of 15 or more people, you’ll get a 15% discount on your tickets. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the season, than gathering your family and joining us at White Christmas.

Wynton Marsalis is always a Music Hall fan favorite and I can’t wait to welcome him back with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. If you haven’t had the chance to see them perform live yet, don’t miss this show. Who would turn down a chance to see Chris Isaak, in our intimate Historic Theater? His great voice matched with our amazing acoustics, I know it’s going to be a show everyone is talking about. Patricia Lynch Executive Director/CEO, The Music Hall

On a Friday morning each month, as Portsmouth is just waking up, a hundred people gather at the Loft armed with coffee cups for CreativeMornings PKX (PKX stands for Portsmouth, Kittery and Beyond). There are free breakfast treats and plenty of coffee from Popovers waiting for them as they stream into the lobby to network and meet up with friends both old and new. With nearly 200 locally organized chapters around the world, CreativeMornings has a global theme and a local speaker who talks for about 20 minutes then takes questions. This format creates a common thread that ties together communities from Portsmouth to Seoul. Through this series, we have discovered people living in our community with hidden talents, heard their amazing stories, and gone with them on harrowing journeys. We have a front row seat to some of what makes this community great. Typically only hosted in much larger cities, the Seacoast again punches above its weight. We’ve heard from Michael Venn, the director of The Heroin Effect about "Taboo," Knate Higgins of Deadwick’s fame talking about embracing your "Weird," and Bob Lord, from Parma Recordings on "Serendipity" to name just a few. Video of all of the talks can be viewed at CreativeMornings.com/PKX. While each presentation is free, they do fill up quickly; we strongly recommend that you sign up for their enews so you don’t miss out. Remember to set your alarm to discover something new at the Loft, we promise it’s worth getting out of bed for!
Let’s Talk About The Screen-time Dilemma Sometimes you just need to look up… On July 11 our Let’s Talk About series is tackling how screen-time is affecting not just our daily lives, but our interpersonal relationships, and society. We spend so much time staring at our phones and other screens that finding a balance with real life can be a challenge. Where is the line between being connected and informed and disappearing down a digital rabbit hole? We’re partnering with Seacoast Digital Fast as they get ready to lay down the challenge once again to put your screens down for a weekend (August 4-6). So, make sure to mark your calendars and join us for a moderated discussion to talk about how screen time is affecting us on July 11 at the Loft. For more information about Let’s Talk About and Seacoast Digital Fast see TheMusicHall.org.
You’re not just a member; along with our Director of Marketing & Communications, Monte Bohanan, you curate the Let’s Talk About… series. What has been your favorite moment here at The Music Hall? Without question the most moving moment was our first Let’s Talk About event. It was so impactful to see a room at capacity filled with people who wanted to talk about, and do something about, the heroin epidemic, but my favorite moment was each time that night someone decided to stand and say why they were there.
For those who may not be members yet, what would you say are some of the “unexpected benefits” of being a Music Hall member? Early ticket access, discounted shows, and local member deals are pretty top-of-mind, I guess. There’s also this cool thing that happens when you go to lots of things at the Hall — you just get to know everyone that helps make these amazing events happen. Here are a few of my personal benefits: • The bartenders who see me and say, “Old Brown Dog?” #whereeverybodyknowsyourname • The smell of popcorn in my stack of mail at the time of month when NOW arrives! • Following @sergeantclancy on Instagram

Preserving Traditions While Pushing Boundaries This summer we are bringing a bit of Mardi Gras back to Portsmouth with the return of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) on Wednesday, July 26. In anticipation of their return, Ben Jaffe, the renowned band's Creative Director, took time out of a busy schedule to share his thoughts with our Deputy Director of Programming, Thérèse LaGamma.
You’ve performed alongside legendary heavy weights like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, The Grateful Dead as well as modern giants like My Morning Jacket, the Black Keys, and Arcade Fire on festival stages from Coachella to Newport. What are some of your favorite types of gigs to play? Give us a highlight. There’s an energy you feel when performing in front of large crowds. that you can feel the vibrations. For us, playing at the Hall in New Orleans is like that. There’s nothing like playing music in your own house. Preservation Hall is our chapel. When we play it's our church. Music is our faith, it's our religion.

Tell us about the venue back home in New Orleans that houses the band. What happens to Preservation Hall in New Orleans while the band is touring? Is there a core of musicians that stay behind? Preservation Hall in New Orleans is a modest room, only fits about 70 people that gather nightly to listen to music performed by bands led by some of New Orleans’ finest musicians. Even when the PHJB is traveling there’s music pouring out of Preservation Hall. We never have a dark night! Seven days a week, year round! We’re the Niagra Falls of music!
BLOOD SIMPLE (The Coen Brothers) Tue., October 17 • 7pm • Loft
Are there any New Orleans traditions PHJB tries never to miss? I always make an extra effort to be home on Mardi Gras Day. It’s important to me to be here then. It's a day when the entire city is unified and celebrating life. As a child, my dad would take me to march with him and the Olympia Brass Band. Those were some of my earliest musical memories. dealing with a family emergency. My wife and daughter came to visit me and as Mardi Gras approached, my wife could see how torn I was not being at home. She insisted I fly back late on Monday night just so I could be in New Orleans to play as the sun rose over the city on Mardi Gras Day. It made for a very special moment I’ll always remember.
