MEMBERS, SPONSORS. & MORE Shining a light on Rockingham Electric When you step inside the Historic Theater and see the showstopping crystal chandelier, you can thank our long-time corporate partner and Intimately Yours Series Sponsor, The Lighting Center at Rockingham Electric, who was integral in replacing the metal trash can lid that was our "chandelier" for over 65 years.

Upcoming Club Events Wed., March 8 Directors Club at Franklin Oyster House

The Lighting Center joined The Music Hall family in 2005 as a Kitchen Tour sponsor. Four years later, they began supporting Intimately Yours, becoming a Series Sponsor in 2014. Our partnership, however, extends beyond sponsorship. In 2012, the company worked with us to create not just the perfect chandelier for our 135th Anniversary, but all of the wall sconces in the auditorium and the light fixtures that adorn the upper lobby. Their help and ongoing dedication has allowed us to create settings that are just as magical as the performances that take place on our stage.

Mon., March 13 Book Club The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Tue., March 21 Film Club - Stella Dallas

According to Jim Pender, President and COO of The Lighting Center and Music Hall board member, “When it comes to community and the arts on the Seacoast, The Music Hall is at the top of its game. Nothing could make our family and staff more proud than to partner with this great organization.” A family-owned business since 1951, The Lighting Center has two New Hampshire-based lighting showrooms. To learn more about the business, visit RockinghamLightingCenter.com. To get the whole story behind the chandelier, go to this month’s Sponsor Spotlight at TheMusicHall.org.

HERE & NOW The Heroin Effect Two years ago, while the seacoast community was reeling from another heroin induced death, we at The Music Hall felt strongly that we needed to start talking about this epidemic and the very real impact it was having. Part of our mission is to be a place that inspires conversations and from that, our Let’s Talk About series came to life. We called together experts in education, treatment, recovery, and law enforcement to have a moderated discussion. Community members were invited to join us to talk about what we could do to help end this epidemic. Participants ranged from recovering addicts, parents looking for ways to talk to their children about drugs, seacoast residents, and legislators. That night, we were also joined by a couple of filmmakers, who were creating a documentary on effects heroin has on a community. This month, that movie, aptly named The Heroin Effect, will have its first community screening at our Historic Theater. This locally-produced documentary, takes a hard look at the national crisis. Featuring people who are in long-term recovery programs, as well as a man’s video diary about his daily struggles to find ways to not just become sober, but to stay sober and clean. This movie shows some of the many faces of addiction and recovery, as well as how it impacts their day-to-day life and the lives of the people around them.

Through the subjects of this documentary, we learn that while this has become a scary epidemic, with 114 people dying from a heroin overdose every day in America, there is hope for a solution. The best way to combat this problem is to have an open dialogue, not just about drugs, but how as a culture we view addicts and treat addiction. This shift in the way people think will allow us to focus on the solutions to this epidemic, as opposed to what created the problem. We are honored to be the first community screening of The Heroin Effect on Thursday, March 30. For us here at The Music Hall, we pride ourselves on being a place where conversations about difficult topics like this can take place. We hope that you’ll join us after the film for a panel discussion and Q&A with the filmmakers, subjects of the film, and local treatment specialists. Together, we can fight this epidemic.

Cuisine & Confessions of a Restaurant Town It seems that nearly every month, Portsmouth is celebrated for its booming restaurant scene. From being featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives; to stories in the Boston Globe, Paste Magazine, and The New York Times; it’s no wonder USA Today named us one of America’s “Best Small Town Food Scenes.” Twice a year, thanks to the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, we celebrate these successes with Restaurant Week. Located in downtown Portsmouth and with so many restaurants as partners, what better time to pay tribute to our unique culinary scene. Just a handful of days after Restaurant Week, Montrealbased cirque troupe, Seven Fingers of The Hand, flips their way onto our Historic stage with their new show: Cuisine and Confessions. Called “a marvelous feast” and “a banquet for the senses” by the Boston Globe, this show was built on the real-life stories of all of the cast members from their time working in the restaurant industry. The show features live cooking on stage (we hear the banana bread is amazing), astonishing acrobatics, and a set that takes inspiration from the cast’s kitchens— childhood, current, or dream. They even wash dishes as they go! Join us for a fun and interactive look into life in a kitchen. Make your reservations for Spring Restaurant Week March 30 - April 8 and get your tickets to Seven Fingers of the Hand on April 19.
