CURATOR'S CORNER - Chris Curtis, Film & Outreach Manager Celebrating Telluride When people ask me what my favorite Music Hall event is, without even having to think about it, I say Telluride by the Sea. As one of the Film Curators for both of our theaters, it probably comes as no surprise that I would choose a weekend packed full of movies that most people haven’t yet had the opportunity to see. Being among the first people to see some of the most buzzworthy new Photo credit: Sydney Bilodeau

films is pretty excellent, but it’s also the Loft series of movies for

passholders, parties and the excitement on the streets that add up to make the weekend for me. Each year in the Loft, we have a different theme that celebrates elements of Cinema’s past. We’ve highlighted some of the best silent films, documentaries, classics of the masters, and many more, courtesy of Bill and Stella Pence, Co-Founders and Directors Emeriti of Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. What I love about this series is that it celebrates the work that the Telluride Film Festival has done and continues to do to preserve and celebrate the rich and vibrant history of movies. While I can’t yet tell you the titles for this year’s festival, as you’ll most likely be reading this before we’re allowed to share, I can tell you that this year is another stellar year of films. Mark your calendars, get your passes, and I’ll see you at the movies! ◊ Already on sale

Construction begins on Chestnut Street You may notice that there is some construction taking place in front of the Historic Theater as we break ground on the Chestnut Street Improvement Project. With the help of dedicated donations, we are able to match the City of Portsmouth's funds to make necessary improvements to the street. Independently, we are also replacing our damaged marquee, and installing a piece of public art with the help of a group of visionary donors, artisans, builders, and planners. Through our partnership with the City of Portsmouth, the street will be widened to make it more accessible to school busses and emergency vehicles. The sidewalks will be leveled to make them easier to walk down, even in the icy winter months. While those improvements are being made, the utility lines will be buried, drainage better managed, and benches and plants will be added to make it a more inviting gathering place.

Independently from our partnership with the City of Portsmouth and thanks to a dedicated capital campaign, The Music Hall is gifting the city a wayfinding arch. Placed at the foot of Chestnut Street, this piece of public art will help visitors find their way to cultural landmarks throughout town, as well as welcome visitors to the Historic Theater. We are also in the process of replacing our damaged particle board marquee. We have been

working with the leading historic marquee sign builder in the country to create a marquee as magnificent as the Historic Theater itself. The new illuminated, vintage-inspired marquee will not only complement the feel of the theater, but lend some much needed light to Chestnut Street. While these projects are taking place, the Historic Theater will still be full of entertaining and thought-provoking programming that you’ve come to know and love.

Making Theater Accessible to All This year, 600 children from local Title I elementary schools received scholarships to our School Days Series program. For many of these students, this was their first exposure to live theater, and we are so proud to play a part in introducing them to the wonders of performing arts. At the end of last season, we received a batch of lovely thank you notes from the students at Woodman Park Elementary School in Dover who attended The Little Prince.

Omar Peraza.

How did you first get introduced to The Music Hall and what drew you to become a member?

Thank you for putting on the show, the little prince. It was amazing! My favorite part was when the prince meets the fox! From, Sienna

We were first introduced to The Music Hall when we moved to Portsmouth in 2013 and went to see a movie there. We were drawn to become members for a number of reasons, the high quality of the movies shown and the fact that we can see movies that are not typically shown at the multiplexes. Also, the film festivals; as well as the variety and high quality of music and entertainment programs presented at the Historic Theater and the Loft drew us in. And last also because we fell in love with the beauty of the Historic Theater.

Thank you for putting on a great show The Little Prince. It was amazing! My favorite part was the little prince and the rose. Love Michael

For those who may not be members yet, what would you say are some of the “unexpected benefits” of being a Music Hall member? The number of neighbors and acquaintances one runs into at Music Hall events; such serendipitous encounters lead to a stronger sense of community and closer friendships.

You come to a lot of movies here at TMH. Do you have a favorite one that you’ve seen? ONE favorite one? That's almost impossible to decide! Here are the two that come to mind right away… Mr. Turner and Wild Tales.

Thank you to our Corporate Partners 12 NOW 603.436.2400

Save the Date for the Holiday Auction: October 29 As a community-supported 501(c)3 organization, The Music Hall relies on fundraising events like our annual online Holiday Auction to underwrite our many outreach activities (such as the School Days Series program highlighted above). This year, bidding opens on Sunday, October 29 and runs through Sunday, November 12. You’re going to want to mark your calendar, as this auction will serve as your complete holiday shopping guide. Featuring one-of-a-kind experiences, vacations to fabulous locations, plus gift certificates and must-have items from your favorite local stores and restaurants, what better way to start your holiday shopping than our annual auction? Keep an eye on your email as well as our website and social media channels for sneak peeks!

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Clear Eye Photo: Capturing the Magic Night after night, year after year, legendary performers take the stage here at The Music Hall. Who could forget Steve Martin strumming the banjo, Trevor Noah testing out his jokes before taking over the desk at The Daily Show, Brandi Carlile’s totally acoustic Pin Drop Tour, Aimee Mann rocking out on her guitar, and so many other extraordinary moments. Thankfully, we have David J. Murray of Clear Eye Photo to capture all of those magical moments. As you walk through the Loft, you’ll notice a gallery of familiar faces welcoming you. Our portrait gallery is full of iconic images from the Historic Theater shows that have captured the moments that we are all still talking about. These photos taken by David are just a small part of our partnership. His images grace the cover of our playbill each season, populate the pages of our monthly magazine as well as our social media, and are used for our institutional marketing initiatives. If his name sounds familiar, you might have seen his work before. David not only uses traditional camera, but he also has a drone that takes photos of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas from above. He’s also the photographer that has captured the iconic Vintage Christmas images that are displayed at the Discover Portsmouth Center. Check out ClearEyePhoto.com and scroll through his collection of spectacular pictures. David doesn’t just capture an image, he captures the magic that happens at our theaters.
