CURATOR'S CORNER SEE "THE BEST OF THE BEST" FILMS AT THE MUSIC HALL - CHRIS CURTIS, Film and Outreach Manager While most people start talking about the Academy Awards in January, here at The Music Hall, we start in September during the Telluride by the Sea Film Festival. Over three days we get a sneak peek at the movies that often turn out to be award show front-runners, including this season's award show darling, The Shape of Water. After the jam-packed weekend, curator Bill Pence and I keep an eye out for the other movies that will end up on the "Best Of" lists. Over the last couple of months, we’ve been riveted by Dunkirk, charmed by Lady Bird, and captivated by Loving Vincent, to name a few. As the awards begin to be handed out, and the Oscar Buzz mounts, our February movie lineup is full of the season's most Photo credit: Sydney Bilodeau
talked about films. This month, all eyes are on Best Dramatic Picture winner at the Golden Globes, Three Billboards Outside
Ebbing, Missouri, starring Frances McDormand (2018 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama), Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell (2018 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama). Mark your calendars to see The Disaster Artist and Call Me By Your Name, two of this season's dark horse contenders. While I love the big studio films and feature pictures, one of my favorite things to bring to The Music Hall are the Oscar-nominated shorts. At the Loft, we show the best of the best live action, animated and documentary shorts. These are movies that are a little harder to find than some of this year's other nominees but are some of the best examples of short-form filmmaking, and we have them all for you to see before the awards are handed out. Get your Oscar ballots out, mark your calendars, and we’ll see you at the movies!

Evolution of An Artist: An Interview with José González The Music Hall’s Intimately Yours series welcomes singer/songwriter José González to town on February 8. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden to Argentinian parents, González is known for his classical guitar playing and has gained a big fan following with his Swedish folk rock band Junip. On this tour he performs solo, playing songs from his three solo albums, plus a few recognizable covers in his own brilliant, genre-busting style. Deputy Director of Programming and Series Producer, Thérèse LaGamma, caught up with him to discuss influences and career highlights.
Stay after the movie for Show and Tell
Were you trained classically on guitar or was this something you picked up later?
Have you ever watched a movie and as
For some years I studied with a private teacher who taught me Spanish classical tunes and gave me technical training that has been useful for the rest of my career. One of my favorite pieces was “Asturias” by Isaac Albeniz. I did start on my own, as well playing songs by Silvio Rodriguez, João Gilberto, and the Beatles among others.
the credits rolled felt that you needed to
What kind of music did you listen to as a kid? What are you currently listening to?
and coffee? Then you’re going to want to
I grew up with music from Latin America and The Beatles. But when I started to find my own taste I went through Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, and other well known singers. In my teens I got more into punk, like Black Flag, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, and later metal hard core—the style that we played in our band Renascence, which later became Sweet Little Sinister. I also enjoyed hip-hop of the early nineties and indie rock like Dinosaur Jr. Nowadays—fast forward 20 years—I listen to a wide range of music. High life, ragga, electro, salsa, cumbia, rock steady... you name it!
What have been some of your favorite places to play? In 1,000 shows I’ve had amazing experiences all over the world. Sometimes this happens where I least expect it! It’s usually the venue and the audience that makes a show special—not so much the city and even less the country.
Give us a career highlight. When I played my version of the "Knife’s Heartbeats" at festivals in the UK and Ireland, there were a couple of times when the crowd sang along so loudly that I couldn’t hear myself. #beatlesmoment.
What has touring solo been like versus touring with your band Junip? The most noticeable difference between touring solo or with other musicians is when I get off stage after the show. There’s no one to high five and say we did a great show. Otherwise, it’s pretty similar. We always travel in a group of at least four people, we drink beer and discuss silly things. Musically, there’s a difference of course. On my own I have more pressure to perform well with my guitar but at the same time I’m freer in my dynamics and I can vary the tempo when I feel like it.

I first got into music from West Africa through desert blues and Afro beat about ten years ago, listening to artists like Amadou & Mariam, Ali Farka Toure, and Tinariwen. I was intrigued by their style of playing guitar and had moments at home when I sat and played along. My songs that are inspired by those styles are "Killing for Love," "Stories We Build," "What Will," and "Afterglow."

Member Spotlight: Guy Capecelatro Membership Coordinator Alexis Hahalis chatted with Guy Capecelatro about being a Music Hall member and local musician.
How did you first get introduced to The Music Hall and what drew you to become a member? When The Music Hall started putting on movies in the '90s, it really changed my relationship with the space. The acts they drew began to broaden as well and I got to see Laurie Anderson, Soul Coughing, a couple different modern dance troupes, Phillip Glass, and other performers that were fully in my wheelhouse. Being able to walk downtown and watch world class performers was well worthy of my support.
For those who may not be members yet, what would you say are some of the "unexpected benefits" of being a Music Hall member? Personally, I really enjoy being close to the performers to really feel the intimacy of a show so being able to get tickets early is a major benefit of being a member. When the newsletter arrives each month, I pour through and mark the calendar with the shows I’m interested in.
Not only are you a member, you are also a performer who has performed at the Loft multiple times. What keeps bringing you back? The Loft is truly my favorite place in town to both see music and perform. There isn’t a bad seat in the room and the sound is always impeccable. The attention to detail and concern for sound both for the audience and for the performers is such a joy. It’s also important in bringing in musicians, authors, movies and comedians who wouldn’t be able to fill the bigger Hall but should be coming to town.

Standing up, Speaking Out, and Changing Lives It seems that every time we turn on the news there’s another story about sexual misconduct. Stories about top producers, news anchors, and many other men in power committing crimes against women. While the news is dominated by these stories happening in Hollywood and New York, this is also a problem right here in the Seacoast. This month on Sunday, February 11, at our Historic Theater, we are honored to welcome Neoteric Dance Collaborative to our stage with their production of Shelter: A One Billion Rising Event. This show is a fundraiser for HAVEN, the largest violence prevention and support services agency in New Hampshire and a Music Hall community partner. “The work that HAVEN does to support women in dangerous situations is invaluable to our community,” said Patricia Lynch, executive director of The Music Hall. “To welcome Neoteric back to the Historic Theater for the third year, with their powerful production, during this time in our culture is so important to us here. This show is a must see for everyone, male and female.” One Billion Rising, a global event, evolved from the V-Day movement in 2012. The name comes from the UN statistic that one in three, or about one billion, women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. “Our mission at HAVEN is to eliminate domestic and sexual violence through education, support, and social change, and this show is a powerful way to show the effect of this violence. For a long time, violence against women was only whispered about, our goal is to take away the stigma, to encourage people to speak out about it, and to provide resources for those who have suffered from it. HAVEN provides support to women, men, youth, and families. The message of this show is stand up, speak out, and let’s change the story of the lives who have been impacted,” said Kathy Beebe, executive director of HAVEN. This year’s theme, Shelter, depicts the history of women seeking refuge, the emergence of shelters in the 1970s, and where we as a nation stand on the issues of today. Through dance, theater, and film, Shelter amplifies the stories of real women, whose voices often go unheard. Make sure to get your tickets to see this powerful show on Sunday, February 11, at 7pm, and help support the important work that HAVEN is doing here in Southeastern New Hampshire.
PARTNER PROFILE Share the Love! Love the Arts! Valentine’s Day makes February the perfect time for declarations of love. What better time is there to share our love for the City of Portsmouth, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts (NHSCA), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)? Partnering with these organizations allows us to fulfill our joint missions to make New Hampshire a better place and support the community we love. Government support of the arts is essential to the strength of our community; enhancing our quality of life through engaging, thoughtprovoking programming that sparks conversation for audiences young and old. Our national and local governmental partnerships are invaluable to our success. Thanks to funds leveraged from the State Council and the NEA over the past two decades, we are able to make the arts accessible and dynamic to patrons around the State. It’s not just programming - the public-private partnership with the City of Portsmouth to beautify and improve Chestnut Street has helped us ensure the sustainability and improve the physical access to our theater for generations to come. These partnerships prove that working together makes lasting impact possible.
