CURATOR'S CORNER LIVELY PERFORMANCES AND NEW VOICES PATRICIA LYNCH, Executive Director Get excited for all of the amazing shows coming our way this month! There are still great seats for Thompson Square, a charged and gutsy performance not to be missed! This sexy, dynamic duo creates a chart-topping, modern-day country with their The Civil Wars-meets-Nashville sound. You will love them. Photo: David J. Murray, ClearEyePhoto.com

If you’re looking for a different vibe, Tinariwen is hypnotic and chill, filling the stage with their guitar-shredding blues. This band infuses traditional Tuareg songs with western rock for a truly amazing event. I’m so excited about this group—NPR

calls them “music’s true rebels” and I couldn’t agree more. Tried and true, Cowboy Junkies will bring their 30 years of country, blues, and folk to the Historic Theater. Their original work astounds, but their covers and traditional songs honor those who came before them. They come to Portsmouth a week after the release of their latest, All That Reckoning, so this will be a special occasion to see them! Straight No Chaser returns to Portsmouth with their captivating harmony and humor. Covering everything from traditional a cappella tunes to the latest pop, to their own original songs. Truly, this bunch is unforgettable, which is why we love bringing them back. Always looking ahead, I am excited to see Seu Jorge with his smooth samba and David Bowie covers, as well as our annual Telluride by the Sea festival—nine movies in three days! Music legends Renée Fleming and Boz Scaggs will visit in October and November, and Lee Child sends his beloved character, Jack Reacher, to New Hampshire. If you feel like you missed the memo, new shows drop in all the time. Keep your eye out for new shows by signing up for the enews at TheMusicHall.org for the most up-to-date info. Upcoming shows are announced to members in advance of the First Saturday on sale, but we announce shows throughout the month as well. See you in the theater soon!

Celebrating Our Season Sponsors The Music Hall has experienced dynamic growth over the last five years and much of the credit goes to the steadfast support of our most significant sponsors. We are so grateful to our Season Sponsors; for 2018-19 we are delighted to once again welcome back Portwalk Place, celebrating their fifth year as Season Sponsor; Carey & Giampa Realtors, back for a sixth year; and our longest standing Season Sponsor, the River House Restaurant. We would also like to thank the University of New Hampshire, returning for a fifth season as our Contributing Partner, and B2W Software, back for a third year as sponsor of the B2W Box Office at the Historic Theater. The generosity of this group forms the cornerstone of support that gives us confidence in building and extending programming, and taking more risk that in turn leverages donor support. In the last five years, The Music Hall has blossomed, providing higher quality entertainment to greater numbers of members and patrons. During that time we’ve seen a 33% increase in membership, and a 30% increase in annual visitation.

As The Music Hall celebrates our 30th year as a communitysupported 501c3 non-profit and the 140th year of our Historic Theater, we remain committed to our mission, presenting inspiring programs in music, theater, dance, and cinema, as well as literary and educational initiatives in our two outstanding downtown Portsmouth venues. It is our longstanding partnerships that provide the solid foundation for this work and our growth, a foundation we will use to serve audiences throughout the Seacoast for years to come. To our Season Sponsors and Partners, as well as our longstanding members, thank you. We are so appreciative of your sustaining support.

Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement, cinephile, and bookworm caught up with members Sheila Clark-Edmands and Peter Edmands to chat about how The Music Hall has opened up a new community to them.

What first drew you to The Music Hall? We love film and began attending the Telluride by the Sea Film Festival with a group of fellow film buffs from Maine. We feel extremely fortunate to have such a high quality experience so close to our home. We continue to attend screenings of films and discussions held at the Loft. We never tire of these opportunities.

Some members join as Friends or Advocates and then work their way up to higher levels of membership. Can you share why you jumped right in at Patron? Not only were we attracted to the outstanding films offered, but we also loved the opportunity to attend music, comedy, theater, and author events. Of particular interest to us, and an incentive to a higher level of membership, was the monthly book club discussion and social events. It became clear we could not resist the value of a membership!

What is one thing you would share with someone who is considering membership? Although we are from Kennebunk, Maine, The Music Hall has made Portsmouth our neighborhood. As a member you feel that you are part of an important family of supporters who are bringing wonderful opportunities to many people.

Thank you to our Corporate Partners TheMusicHall.org

HERE & NOW Behind the Curtain with Michael Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies The Cowboy Junkies make their way to town on Fri., July 20 behind their newest album, All That Reckoning. The band has experienced much success during a 32year career, including their induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame (2015). Our Deputy Director of Programming & Curator, Thérèse LaGamma, recently caught up with guitarist Michael Timmins to discuss the band’s evolution, longevity, and signature sound.

What inspired the quiet sound of your early recordings? It came from many factors. A primary one was that Margo sang so quietly that we had to adjust our volume to her approach. We also did all of our early rehearsing in a garage in downtown Toronto. And after a few visits by the police because of noise complaints we started to turn down the volume and eventually found that we liked the way we could relate to each other at low sound levels.

The Music Hall's New and Improved Website! If you’ve been to our website lately, you might have noticed something different…the whole thing! We revamped our website with a cleaner, more modern look and an easy-to-use experience for our patrons. This is one of the final pieces of our rebranding process, and proves to be the cherry on top of a beautiful and beneficial project. We are so thankful for Raka Creative for their design, advice, and collaboration on this new and improved website. Raka worked within our guidelines and needs, and helped make this website even more usable for all (more on this collaboration on the next page)! We made a bunch of changes, including the following: • We’ve improved the ticket-buying process. It’s easier than ever. • The site is much more mobile-friendly. • All the menus have been simplified and rearranged, so they are more intuitive and easier to navigate. • The calendar now has both a month-at-a-glance view AND an agenda view. Thanks to patron feedback, you can now get the best of both worlds. (Tip: Click the show name for more info, and the time for tickets.) • Searching is much easier, and you can do it from anywhere in the site. • Check out the “You May Also Like” bar at the bottom—something might catch your eye! • Curious what’s happening this week? The home page has the next six events, so you can plan out your week. To get the most out of the new site and your membership, try these “pro-tips:” • Under Events, you’ll find our series listings. If you are looking for an event, it’s likely under one of these series. Click on one and explore! • If you are looking for our social events, you can find them on the calendar or in the Events menu under Clubs & Talks. • If you want to learn more about what we do outside of putting on shows, click
