We Love You, Miss Hannigan!
Sally Struthers as Miss Hannigan, 2012 Pittsburgh CLO production of Annie. Photo by Matt Polk.
The spectacular Sally Struthers returns to The Music Hall in the Ogunquit Playhouse production of Annie this month, and we couldn’t wait to catch up with her! Sally is a two-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the groundbreaking TV series All in the Family. Her credits include, but are not limited to, 9 to 5, Gloria, Still Standing, and Gilmore Girls. In addition to the several Broadway roles, Sally played the coveted role of Miss Hannigan for the 20th Anniversary National Tour of Annie. In 2017, Sally has graced our stage before as Martha Watson in White Christmas. Sally will reprise her Broadway Tour role as Miss Hannigan, absolutely stealing the show as the villainous orphanage director whose change of heart comes just in time for Christmas.

Just Announced: Our Next Film Club Series Starting in January 2020 MURDERERS (GREAT ACTORS KILL PEOPLE) Hosted by Kent Stephens Subscription (series of six): $75; Individual Ticket: $15
This winter we bring you six murderers, played by some of the cinema’s biggest stars, many in award-winning performances. Starting with Fritz Lang’s far-ahead-of-its time M, the classic blueprint for the serial killer film, each month you’ll cozy up to a different monster whose shoes some outstanding actor wanted to walk around in. Five of our six homicidal anti-heroes are inspired by real people; with veteran acting teacher Kent Stephens as host, we’ll learn how Peter Lorre, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irons, Charlize Theron, Martin Sheen, and Kathleen Turner prepped to play these perps. If things get too scary, remember: we serve drinks…
About the Host: Kent Stephens Director/playwright/performer Kent Stephens is a professional theatre artist and movie aficionado who has staged over 200 productions in the American regional theatre and off-Broadway. He has run theatre programs, taught acting, or been guest artist at University of Minnesota, Emerson, Cornell, Carleton, and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Kent has previously hosted series for the Film Club on Orson Welles, great comics, and Westerns, and for Telluride by the Sea, a series of film noir.

HERE & NOW Join Us in Welcoming Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra's New Executive Director Earlier this year, the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) became our resident orchestra, and Susanne Powers became PSO’s executive director. Send Off 2019 with One Last Laugh! ‘Tis the season to be jolly! We are so excited to be hosting the very funny Juston McKinney for our traditional Last Laugh at the end of December (12/27, 28, 29). His three shows sold out quickly last year so don’t wait to make him part of your holiday plans; you won’t want to miss him! Our Deputy Programming Director, Thérèse LaGamma, caught up with Juston to talk about his process.

Tell us about your writing process. Is there somewhere special you go to write? I just observe and record what I see and what people around me do. I spend a lot of time at my local coffee shop, which ironically as I write this, is closed today. Living in a small town can be like the movie My Cousin Vinny when the whole store was closed because they had the flu. There was a note on the coffee shop that read, “recovering from a crazy wedding, we’ll be back tomorrow.” So will I.

HERE & NOW Engaging Seniors As we are all aging, we’re well aware of the challenges of staying engaged. Seniors want to stay active, be involved, feel connected, and continue to learn and surround ourselves with age diversity. The Music Hall is the perfect setting for that. By expanding on the ways in which we build inclusion, we can better serve seniors who are lonely and isolated, who are more likely to struggle with physical and or mental health issues. A number of programs are created with our more mature audiences in mind. Whether it be literary, film, music, or theater, we aim to bring in diversity. Clubs and opportunities to join in conversation provide vehicles for life-long learning goals, offering community and inspiration. This year we’ve expanded our Give the Gift of Magic program for Annie to include Easterseals of New Hampshire. They will help us distribute tickets to those more vulnerable seniors and their caretakers, facilitating a fun and heartwarming excursion during the (sometimes difficult) holiday season. Susan Silsby, SVP, Programs, Easterseals NH, VT, ME reminded us how important this is, noting, “Partnerships like this help Easterseals live our mission of helping individuals with disabilities and other special needs, to have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their own communities.”
Visit TheMusicHall.org/Blog for more behind-the-scenes info!
Membership Makes a Great Gift: Be One AND Give One! Give the best gift of the year with a membership to The Music Hall. Don’t give “stuff” and “things.” This holiday season give an experience that will delight long after the curtain has closed. If you’re looking for great gifts, if you’re considering upgrading your membership, or if you haven’t yet officially joined The Music Hall family, this is the time to “Be One and Gift One.” From now until December 31, when you purchase, upgrade, or renew your membership, The Music Hall will send a complimentary Friend-level membership ($50 value) to someone on your holiday shopping list. You pick a special person on your list who isn’t already a member, and we’ll do the rest. It’s as easy as that! A gift that keeps on giving all year long, membership means access to advanced ticket purchase opportunities; special discounts at 40+ businesses around Portsmouth; an invitation to the Up Next celebration of members, sponsors, and volunteers; a copy of our monthly magazine mailed to your home; and insider news emails with announcements and deals. This is the perfect time to start new traditions for you and yours as part of The Music Hall's family. For more information or to take advantage of this great offer, contact Jess Bunker at 603.766.2176 or go online to TheMusicHall.org.
Happy Holidays from The Music Hall Staff!
And every night at the theater, seniors enjoying the freedom and flexibility of retirement make up 75% of our dedicated cadre of volunteers. As they bustle about the theater providing more than 23,000 hours of service annually, these volunteers are making connections, staying active, and seeing great shows and films. We are grateful for this invaluable service; we couldn’t do what we do without this team! Photo Credit: David J. Murray/ClearEyePhoto.com
