CURATOR'S CORNER A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator A few things have risen to the top of my list in terms of what to expect and look forward to these upcoming months. There is so much—including the return of the Punch Brothers on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. Frontman Chris Thile is known for his versatility on the mandolin. His star first rose with the success of the beloved Grammy Award-winning band Nickel Creek. If you have not yet caught his wonderful radio broadcast, Live From Here on NHPR Saturdays from 6-8pm—do yourselves a favor and give it a listen. The show serves to highlight the works of many wonderful musicians and comedians but it also showcases the mastery Thile has developed as an instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter. Fans of stringed instruments should prepare for the return engagement of banjo phenoms Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Their musical explorations have transported them to far reaches of the globe including China and Africa. And of course, you can expect to hear their more traditional roots music. Join us on April 11 as they retake the stage! And for something totally new—Snarky Puppy makes their debut appearance at The Music Hall on Saturday, May 11. This three-time Grammy Award-winning collective has worked with some of the best in the industry—including D’Angelo, Snoop Dogg, and Erykah Badu. Their repertoire is a beautiful mix of jazz, rock, and funk. We look forward to seeing you at a show! *Check website for ticket details

DIVIDE AND CONQUER: THE STORY OF ROGER AILES

NR • 1h 47m • US 1/29, 1/30, 1/31 • 7pm This documentary sheds light on the current moment in American political life by following the arc of Roger Ailes: long-time Republican svengali and controversial founder of Fox News. By coaching an unrivaled stable of politicians over the course of fifty years, Ailes heavily influenced Republican politics, steering the conservative movement from Nixon to the Tea Party to Trump. Under his tutelage, anger and fear became the coin of the realm, both on the ballot and on national television.

At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu's wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them. Golden Globe Nominee: Best Picture, Foreign Language

2/14 • 7pm For the 14th consecutive year, Shorts HD and Magnolia Pictures present the Oscar Nominated Short Films. With all three categories offered, this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)!

BORDER R

• 1h 50m • Sweden • subtitles 2/20, 2/21, 2/22 • 7pm Another selection from this year's Telluride By The Sea. Customs officer Tina is known for her extraordinary sense of smell. It's almost as if she can sniff out the guilt on anyone hiding something. But when Vore, a suspicious-looking man, walks past her, her abilities are challenged for the first time ever. Tina can sense Vore is hiding something she can't identify. Even worse, she feels a strange attraction to him.

Winner of Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes for director Ali Abbasi

THE GUILTY

R • 1h 25m • Denmark • subtitles 2/26, 2/27, 2/28 • 7pm When police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears as the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear. Director Gustav Möller expertly frames the increasingly messy proceedings against the clean Scandinavian sterility of the station, the single location of the film. TheMusicHall.org

COMMUNITY

Visit TheMusicHall.org/Blog for more behind-the-scenes info!

Thank You for Giving The Gift of Magic! We finished up the third year of our Give The Gift of Magic program in December, and with your generosity and with inspiration from Morgan and Tara Rutman, we were able to shatter our previous goals! This means together we helped so many more of our fellow community members enjoy the holiday magic of the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall's production of Elf The Musical. We are so grateful for the donations from our members, patrons, stakeholders, and corporate sponsors—especially Optima Bank & Trust—not to mention our program partners: Haven, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Arts in Reach, Greater Seacoast Community Health, and Cross Roads House, all of whom helped us to get hundreds of free Elf tickets into the hands of those in need! One among many thank you cards we have received reads, “Thanks so very much for having us to your wonderful Elf The Musical! I can’t overstate what a special treat it was for us. Blessings to all involved for your thoughtful generosity.” Thank you for another outstanding year and for your help in giving to those in need.

Good Morning, Gorgeous

Photo: RayaOnAssignment.com

For almost three years, we rented the Loft to CreativeMornings PKX and since last April our own Monte Bohanan has co-hosted the events alongside Raya Al-Hashmi of Raya On Assignment. Now the relationship is getting serious—The Music Hall has become a co-producer of the series, alongside Noelle Grattan (co-founder of the Portsmouth chapter) and the all-volunteer crew. These events now fall under our Innovation + Leadership series and remain awesome. CreativeMornings PKX is a monthly breakfast lecture series where the guiding principle is that everyone is welcome and everyone is creative. Coffee and nibbles are provided before the event where folks can network and chat. There’s also a 30-second pitch section, where anyone in attendance has the opportunity to share new ideas, plug their new gig, or do a little dance. Then, the main event: the locally sourced speaker takes the stage for a presentation around that month’s global theme. The Music Hall is excited to be a part of this community-driven series and further help its growth and impact. Could there be a better fit? Check out all of the past talks and see what’s up next at CreativeMornings.com/PKX

Celebrate Spring and What’s Up Next at The Music Hall Save The Date! Thu, March 21 • 5:30–7pm • Historic Theater Join us as we celebrate the support of all Music Hall Members, Sponsors, and Volunteers and preview what’s in store for the coming year at The Music Hall! Help us celebrate our volunteers and sponsors. Then stay to learn more about happenings at the theater as Music Hall leaders and curators announce upcoming shows; describe the collaboration with the City of Portsmouth and the Park Concept and Festival in the Worth Lot; and maybe even reveal the title of this year’s Ogunquit Playhouse production at The Music Hall. COMMUNITY The Next 140 Years: Building A Legacy Built in 1878, The Music Hall is the sole remaining theater of the four grand venues that once graced downtown Portsmouth. Can you imagine our town without this community great room? Over the last 30 years since we incorporated as a nonprofit, we’ve been on a journey with a dedicated and generous group of loyal patrons and volunteers. The early days were a reimagining, winning the hearts of our community with the great bones and remarkable acoustics of the theater. Restoration efforts brought the glory back and modernized the facility, enhancing the whole experience of one Photo: David J. Murray/ClearEyePhoto.com spectacular show after another. We’ve leveraged this with steadfast investments from a growing member and sponsorship base. It’s contributed to a healthy organization that has never been more relevant, with 600 events a year, leading to significant economic impact and greater contributions to our community. With this model in place, we recognize the need to protect this success with a focus on stewardship. We are grateful for those of you who have thoughtfully planned for the theater when considering your estate and joined our 1878 Legacy Society. If you love this theater as we do, we’d love to hear from you. For more information, please contact Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement at GCarolan@themusichall.org.
