The School Days Series presented first-rate children's theater production to thousands of kids—600 children from Title I schools were able to attend through our School Days Series Scholarship Program, which covered the cost of tickets, school buses, and even lunches for local kids in need. Last year’s Fill the Hall Food Drive collected tons of food for Gather’s Summer Meals 4 Kids program to subsidize the meals kids miss when school is out. I hope you will help us gather this year, as the need is even greater than before. And the magic of Elf The Musical came to life as hundreds of families and veterans saw the show through generous donations to the Give the Gift of Magic program. At Up Next at The Music Hall, we announced our enhanced collaboration

HERE & NOW

Visit TheMusicHall.org/Blog for more behind-the-scenes info!

What to Expect at Concert in the Lot We’ve got your Father’s Day plans covered! Bring family and friends to the show for New Orleans-style music, food, drink, and fun.

PARKING Since we’ll be taking over a parking lot, look to one of the neighboring parking garages. The City of Portsmouth will have a special deal for event parking at the Foundry Place Garage, a stone’s throw from the Worth Lot, for a $3 flat fee.

ENTERING THE CONCERT Check-in is on Vaughan Mall (by the shops) with our delightful Box Office staff. You will be given color-coded wrist bands for your seating option and if you’re 21+ (for the beer and wine garden).

FOOD & DRINK Speaking of beer and wine, we’ll have a special area for those over 21 to purchase beverages from Cisco Brewers and Vinilandia Wines. No alcohol can be brought into the concert, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! There will also be trucks selling food and soft drinks. We’re aiming for a low-waste event, so Sustainable Seacoast will graciously be providing water through the Bluedrop Water System!

RAIN PLAN While we’re crossing our fingers that it won’t rain, we’ve got a plan! If it rains, the concert will be moved into the Historic Theater, where VIPs and those who purchased $15 ticket can get a seat. If you don’t want to gamble on this and haven’t purchased yet, supply is limited, so hurry! See you on Sunday, June 16, rain or shine!

Celebrating Local with the Jumbo Circus Peanuts One of the Seacoast’s most heralded bands, the Jumbo Circus Peanuts will perform as part of our triple bill on June 16. What makes the band unique? Deputy Programming Director Thérèse LaGamma recently caught up with JCP’s John Prendergast to get the low down.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME JUMBO CIRCUS PEANUTS? We were helping somebody move and we had some boxes from the Pic 'n Pay (some people call it Hannaford). One of the boxes was labeled Jumbo Circus Peanuts.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE BAND'S ORIGINS. We are Portsmouth's original DIY brass band, formed just in time for the first Portsmouth Halloween Parade, which ended in the Worth Lot, by the way. We went on to become known in the early days of performing at the Press Room, Wanamaker, and Elvis Room as the band “so bad they're good.” We got better.

WHAT MAKES UP YOUR REPERTOIRE? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BAND'S INFLUENCES? Our earliest influences are the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Our songbook used to be all over the place, but in recent years it's focused on funk, soul, and horn-driven rock and roll.

WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THOSE FUN COSTUMES WORN BY BAND MEMBERS?

The Music Hall's Board President Jay McSharry, Volunteer of the Year Marjorie Wolfson, and Executive Director Patricia Lynch Credit: David J. Murray/ClearEyePhoto.com

Celebrating Our Fantastic Volunteers Up Next was an amazing event for more than just announcing upcoming shows and recapping the last year. This year, we took the opportunity to appreciate our volunteers. We were thrilled to share with the audience of members, sponsors, and staff that our 322 volunteers gave 22,252 hours of their time! Shows at The Music Hall are staffed primarily by volunteers, who invite patrons into the building, run coat check, work concessions, and seat everyone in a timely manner. But they even give their time when there isn’t a show by sending out mailings, cleaning our beautiful chandelier, and decorating the Historic Theater for the holidays. They sort and deliver food for the Fill the Hall Food Drive for Gather, and they ensure the safety and enjoyment of thousands of students during our School Days Series. Every year, we honor one of these incredible volunteers as the Volunteer of the Year, nominated by peers and Music Hall staff. Ever the team player, with a contagious positive and can-do attitude, Marjorie Wolfson is this year’s Volunteer of the Year! We are so thankful for Marjorie and all of the volunteers’ commitment to the theater. Next time you see a volunteer, be sure to thank them for their time.

Every day is Mardi Gras! TheMusicHall.org

What better way to celebrate that commitment than with Service Credit Union as Presenting Sponsor of the Concert in the Lot, a giant block party in partnership with the City of Portsmouth! Established in 1957, Service Credit Union was founded as Portsmouth Air Force Base Federal Credit Union to assist military personnel and their families. Since then, Service Credit Union has grown to over $3.5 billion in assets and now serves those living or working in the state of New Hampshire or the Falmouth, MA area and their families, as well as anyone who has worked for or is currently working for the Department of Defense, including active duty military, veterans, and their families. COMMUNITY

Visit TheMusicHall.org/Blog for more behind-the-scenes info!

Fill Every Seat to Help a Local Child in Need The 5th Annual Fill the Hall Food Drive is Saturday, June 22. Chris Curtis, Film and Outreach Manager here at The Music Hall, spoke with Deb Anthony, Executive Director at Gather, about what this event means for the community and the need to fill every seat.

WHAT INSPIRED THIS COLLABORATION? Denise Wheeler inspired this. She lives the arts, and she is very invested in solving hunger and Gather's Summer Meals 4 Kids program. She brought The Music Hall and Gather together.

WHAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ITS SUCCESS YEAR AFTER YEAR? This is one of the most amazing events. The commitment of The Music Hall to the Seacoast makes it a perfect fit for them to collaborate in the effort to stop hunger here in our community. Fill the Hall is a huge supporter of Summer Meals 4 Kids and Gather’s other food programs. Then, the entire community comes together for a very simple and profound reason: children living here in 2019 should not be hungry. It is magical. Photo: Sydney Bilodeau

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE NEED FOR THIS FOOD DRIVE, WHO BENEFITS FROM IT? Each summer we provide weekly food to children across the Greater Seacoast through our Summer Meals 4 Kids program to replace “free and reduced breakfast and lunch” due to school break. We support over 500 children a week for up to 11 weeks and all school vacations with food to ensure they have breakfast and lunch.

WHAT ITEMS ARE NEEDED THE MOST? Peanut butter, jelly, box cereal, and healthy snacks. See the full list on the event page at TheMusicHall.org.
